Your guide to booking Tokyo flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Tokyo, aim to book around 23 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 25% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Tokyo, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to be around ₹ 50,561 return. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a good deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, aim to travel to Tokyo in February. Return fares historically average ₹ 53,339 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond an ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to evening to save up to ₹ 2,084 per return. Evening flights to Tokyo average ₹ 60,729 compared to ₹ 62,813 for afternoon flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • Bag allowances vary by airline, fare type, cabin class, and route. On flights to Tokyo, some airlines may include bags at no extra cost. For example, Japan Airlines includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, ANA includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, and Air India includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class. Always check the fare details before booking, since bag policies can change by ticket type.
  • Once you arrive in Tokyo, a few great places to start are Ginza, Shinjuku Train Station, and Ueno Railway Station. These are popular with first-time visitors and can give you a good feel for the area.
  • Narita International Airport, also known as Narita Airport, and Tokyo International Airport or Haneda Airport are the two primary facilities that serve air traffic in Japan's capital. Haneda Airport lies about 14 kilometres south of downtown Tokyo, while Narita Airport is about 60 kilometres to the east of the city.
  • The national air carrier, Japan Airlines, and the nation’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways, both use Haneda Airport and Narita Airport as hubs. Jetstar Japan and Spring Airlines Japan are budget airlines that also use Narita Airport as their hub, while Skymark Airlines and Air Do are regional carriers based at Haneda Airport.
  • Narita Airport has three terminals but only two of them, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, have space available for parking your car. Garages P1 and P5 are recommended for Terminal 1, while P2 and P3 are in the vicinity of Terminal 2. The closest parking space for Terminal 3 is P2-N2.
  • Passengers flying with Cathay Pacific on a flight to Tokyo will be happy to hear that the airline has a lounge at Haneda Airport where you can relax and enjoy a bit of downtime. If you’re travelling with another carrier, don’t worry, SKY Lounge and TIAT Lounge both operate two pay-as-you-go areas, all of which are located in the international departures hall.
  • Business travellers can make use of two TIAT waiting rooms at Haneda Airport as meeting rooms or a good place get some work done. The Fuji Waiting Lounge has two conference rooms and two meeting rooms, while the Tsuki Waiting Lounge has two meeting rooms that can be combined to form a larger space if necessary.

The crew assisted the super senior citizen and accommodated her requests. Experience with crew was excellent. However the aircraft did not have a separate business class cabin. Some of the small offer to improve confirmt of passenger like making a bed in helping them sleep, closing the cabin door would go a long way as some of the traveler are not even aware of these facilities. Once they know, they may prefer flying business.

Since I traveled on my birthday, they gave me a gift and a card. How thoughtful and caring.

Delightful. Excellent service, excelling cabin, could never fly coach again! 😎😆😉

Our flight was canceled, then they moved us to a different flight number yet we didn’t receive notifications timely. We had to find out the latest on our own / later AA sent a text with the updated info..

They didn't tell me they changed my flight. So I got confused on what happened to my flight.

Great flight experience although the food served was not up to the usual SQ standards with the main being too saucy.

There were no vegetarian options on flight from India. Then on the next flight there was no chosen entree available. Movie selection was mediocre

Very courteous and professional flight attendants. At least from Delhi to Tokyo leg where a good number of passengers are of Indian origin should have some items of Indian cuisine on the menu other than that great experience.

Excellent service, excellent food and beverage options, plenty of leg room

We asked for Hindu vegetarian meal in advance and the quality of the food was horrendous. Never flying JAL again!

I was expecting to fly in a Japanese airline because that what I bought, very disappointed finding out the change of airline without any explanation.

The stewardesses were excellent! The food and service were great. I will definitely fly ANA in the future.

Excellent. There were setbacks, but it had nothing to do with the crew. Mostly, mechanical which delayed our flight.

Awful. They cancelled my flight from Osaka to Tokyo and did not communicate this with United so my flight was never rescheduled. I had to call United myself who, after being on hold with them for an entire hour, did not believe that my flight had been canceled because ANA never reported this. ANA themselves refused to rebook my flight. United then said they would only rebook my flight for $600. After three hours of calling I was able to rebook my flight. My total trip was delayed 7 hours.

Flights got canceled due to weather and rebooked; however, were rebooked for the latest times and I was unable to move anything up.

Overall great. For improvement: early online check-in with seat choice.

The food was really good and healthy. Hopefully, next time final confirmation before the flight is earlier with complete information such as the Seat and Terminal Numbers.

It was so disappointed trip by unexpected company's fault delay. It had taken 3 hours delay for mechanical maintenance plus another 3 hours for bad weather.

SEA HND sector internet only worked for the last 2.5hrs of flight….. never had this kind of incident with other airlines

Seats were comfortable with excellent legroom. Meals were also quite good. The cabin crew were excellent and very helpful. The check-in experience was also very smooth.

Overall, very pleased with this flight. Boarding could be better because boarding was announced without a microphone so people didn’t know to line up until we heard the staff walking around to announce it. Also, had to stand in line for 10’ before we started moving. My husband who is impatient and cannot stand for too long did not like this. The rest of the flight- crew, food, and entertainment were very good.

Boarding and deviating was mediocre. At boarding they have not prioritized Business class. During debarking they prioritized premium economy. Also bus rides both times.

Very good flight and very kind crew Only thing is I wish there would be a vegetarian option for the meals

For a domestic flight, seats are ok, but fir us as tall dutchies, the legroom is too small. However, for a short and affordable flight, is not a big problem. Staff is still very nice and a complementary water very welcome.

Poor. Flight was delay without prior notice. Poor boarding. Poor meal service. Plane was dirty and smelly. Does not worth the money.

Overall very nice airline. The seats were cloth unlike leather seats I am accustom to on planes. The food was adequate. I had to use a paper boarding pass as they do not like electronic boarding passes. I scanned my electronic pass, but the gate agent requested the paper pass. Luckily I had a paper pass, although my electronic pass worked and when the paper pass was scanned it stated I was already on board.

Was on holiday with my partner and we booked with Vietnam airlines as it not meant to be a budget airline. They separated us and made us sit at either end of the plane. Not the way I planned to spend my time on my holiday separate from my loved one. How can they separate people on the same booking. They know we are together and spending quality time together.

No space in between the seats as per them the average height of human is 5’3” and weight as 55, so seats are designed as per the same. Also, the aircraft was dirty and full of insects

Technical problems checking in. Had to wait a long time while they got things ready.

Vietnam airlines is just one step upper to the cheapest one (vietjet, if you wanted delays and cancel or feel like a criminal then vietjet is for you) for sure better customer cares and on time.

If there is any negative rating for kayak and also for Cathay Pacific or the dealer I used I would give all of them -1000000000000000 I will never ever use kayak again you scammers you rip me off with everything

Flight was kept super cold. I was shivering and had to layer up.

The vegan oriental option was disappointing. The regular vegan option was okay but we've had better.

Indian Vegetarian food was bland and I had to repeatedly ask for Salt. Movie selection is out dated.

Selected ovo lacto meal because I’m ok with milk products but not any meat. It was terrible. We had the same selection back in October when we had traveled and it was pretty good at that time. It was gross this time.

Crew was very good, but could have checked on us when meals were not being served also.

Few vegetarian food options. Incorporating one per meal service would be best and captures a wider audience than just vegetarians (individuals with religious meat restrictions can also eat vegetarian).

Great entertainment system, the seat is a bit old style needs refurbishment

Boarding at the airport was not well managed. Otherwise, had a good flight sitting in the first row (which I paid for). Crew was pretty friendly, and flight was smooth.

I am Vegetarian also has Gluten free food. However they gave me chicken and fish which is gluten free, but i am a vegetrain and i requested crew Hindu meal vegetarian, they said they will come back. .but they never showed up even i asked 2nd time. They could have compensate. I also request airline industry to have another option Gluten Free for Vegetarin people as well. Because Vegetarin people will have gluen issue...

Air India Express operates as a separate airline, so it says. Air India Express is a subsidiary of Air India and is part of the Tata Group, which acquired a 100% stake in the airline. (https://www.tata.com/business/air-india-express). Yet Air India express is not a member of Star Alliance, so Star Alliance gold members do not receive the benefits they would had they traveled on a mainline Air India flight. Even though it's a subsidiary of Air India, which is a Star Alliance airline. Very frustrating.

When landing in Hyderabad, the pilot made a hard landing. Everyone in the plane were shocked. The captain landed the plane hard and felt as if we were going to be thrown out from our seats. It was surprising the captain didn't apologize or make an announcement about. Again a surprise no crew acknowledge this. This was an odd experience!

I appreciated a meal on the shorter flight. It was slightly delayed with no announcement but I was able to determine what was happening.

I don't think there were entertainment options (short flight) - which is why I gave the 'ok' sign. Didn't make a diff in my flight experience either way, however

Really old air craft, broken seats and tray tables. Entertainment screens don’t work. Charging ports didn’t work.

Poor, pilot flew as if he was in hurry and had to coverup for wasted time

seats were not comfortable, entertainment was not working and food could be much better, given the airline calls itself full service and india's flag carrier.

The planes did not have charging jacks for phones or lap tops and there are no monitors for movies. On the flight from Delhi to Hyderabad I was the last person in First asked for a meal choice and only one meal was available so I had no choice.

Crew was polite. Ground crew was prompt in informing about the flight delay. Boarding process was ok. There was no entertainment on the flight. Blankets were not available for an overnight flight. It was very cold & blanket was given upon request. Food was average. It would have been better to serve breakfast instead of a late night dinner as people like to sleep & serving breakfast before disembarking in the morning at Singapore would have been much appreciated. Seats were ok. Plane was old.

Everything was bad o entertainment no nice food crew were pathetic as not helping us at any time
