9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing, nice Onsen that is easy to book privately, delicious Japanese food, spacious room. Hotel personnel will pick you up from the bus station (station name is Sawando, which google calls something else incorrectly). You will get a private dining room, and four out of eight total rooms come with a hot bath inside. Keep in mind that even though you have the hot bath, you won't have a shower in the room. You cannot use the hot bath to clean yourself. The only showers are the public ones, and one private that can be reserved. I initially found that to be inconvenient, but it really was not. Relaxation is about letting go of control! The bed is a Japanese futon, on the floor, but comfortable and warm even in the winter. They will put some kind of a hot-water filled feet warmer under the sheets, too.
Cons: Some amount of sake should have been included in the price of the dinner!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic traditional Japanese hospitality and beautiful food in an unusual location. Not for a second did they make us feel different or unwelcome due to our western/foreign background. We were here for 2 nights and was a highlight of our visit to Japan. A special thanks to Yuta Saitou for his patient help and support before and during our stay.
Cons: Very little not to like in this beautiful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is beautiful and comfortable. The staff is very helpful. I love to stay here.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Silence, calm atmosphere, lovely people, fantastic location , georgeus food and private onsen in room. Thank you for making my stay so special. Food was spectacular everything was in autumn theme. I have been travelling through Japan for three weeks and I missed milk so much, and here you are providing me with a bottle of delicious and fresh milk at 7:00 am...thank you very very much.
7.1 Good
Pros: In general the hotel is average; location is good for catching the bus at Sawando Bus Terminal for going to Kamikochi, it is less than 5 min walk.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Good food good service
Cons: No shower in outdoor bathroom. Nothing around the area or hotel in winter
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They picked us up from the bus stop and brought our bags inside for us. They spoke some good English and explained to us how everything worked. They're were also instructional books for how to use the different baths and what time they're available. We decided not to get dinner but they still provided us with good and drink. Breakfast was amazing.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything was wonderful. The decor is absolutely charming, and the place is quite new and very clean. Our room was huge with lots of amenities, and we slept very well on the futon. Both the outdoor and indoor baths were absolutely lovely after a day in Kamikochi, and we really enjoyed the yukatas and samue nightwear provided. The kaiseki meal and breakfast served in a private room was fantastic, and the service made us feel very special. We had an extremely comfortable, relaxing and luxurious stay.
Cons: The location is very convenient for Kamikochi, but the place is quite close to the road and next to a parking lot. It didn't really bother us, though! The ryokan is also slightly expensive but worth every yen.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The best hostel I got to stay in Japan so far. The guesthouse doesn't only look beautiful and cozy, you will also find everything you need - there is even lint rollers and hot-water bottles. The staff was super friendly, helpful and welcoming, the bar and lobby are really nice to stay. I stayed in the womens dormitory and the beds were really comfortable and there was space to store your luggage under the bed so even with my very large bag I had no problems. They also offer an inexpensive little breakfast! Would and will stay here again!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was very affordable, and it was great to be able to hang out with the hosts and the other guests while I was there. The beds were very comfortable and the other guests made an effort to minimise noise etc. Everything was very clean and sanitary. The hostel had a very cosy feel. The hosts also spoke in slowly in Japanese so I could understand. The other guests were super friendly. We were only a 10 minute walk from the train and bus stations for our day trip.
Cons: Perhaps there could have been a few more options for the breakfast, like eggs or something filling.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really great vibe! Staff are friendly, bunk beds are spacious, communal area is lovely, and a free drink on arrival! Large female only bathroom which was always spotless.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Cosy atmosphere. Lovelly building, warm room with super comfy futon
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hostel is super cozy, it feels more like staying at a lodge or cabin as it's very homely due to the nice lounge area right next to the entrance and the tatami flooring in the dormitory. The owner was really nice as well, they helped us with carrying our luggage which was great.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff
Cons: Bathroom was a little cold in the morning
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely little traditional house very close to the castle and Yohashima shrine. Very warm blankets!!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Had a lounge room
Cons: Steep stairs from upstairs bedroom were highly polished and didn’t have rails.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: During my 12-day trip in Japan, the stay at the thank you hippo hostel was the most lovely. The hostess was super friendly and hospitable, fluent in English, very caring and genuine and made the hostel feel like home. The bedding was surprisingly comfortable and everyone had very good manners and tried not to make a lot of noise. However, a pair of earplugs are still recommended. It was my first time ever staying in a hostel and it was a lovely experience.
Cons: There was no heating in the bathroom and it got so cold that I thought it was literally impossible to take a shower. My friend told me that I should’ve run the shower for a couple of minutes and heated up the bathroom.
7.9 Good
Pros: Close to castle and about a 1km walk from station. Nice place to stay for a night. Loved the vintage chair massager!

Pros: We have higly appreciated he kindness of the staff. The check-in and the check-out procedures were well organised The rooms and the dinner were really nice. We love the Onsen, free tea, coffee and sweet cakes. We were served as Queen and King. This ryokan is highly recommended.

Cons: Would be nicer if we could have choices for meals instead of being a set menu.

Pros: Fantastic staff and fantastic food
Cons: Everything was just perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was such a lovely little inn. The staff are incredibly attentive, the meals are creative and beautiful, and the entire place is immaculately clean. I'd recommend it to anyone coming to Matsumoto.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful traditional ryokan had superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts each day. Rooms were immaculate with extra little touches like a complimentary supper treat left for us each evening. Staff were courteous and spoke enough English to assist us. Onsen was beautiful. Interiors of the rooms and public areas beautifully designed in traditional timbers. We were treated with utmost courtesy and loved our 4-night stay here. Highly recommend this ryokan to anyone who perhaps has never experienced this type of Japanese hospitality. And the food was the next level of master chef!
Cons: So hard to find anything to fault here. Location is a little bit out of central Matsumoto, but that makes this place such a retreat... a nearby local bus took us directly to Matsumoto Castle and Station, and a 10 minute taxi ride brought us back. We loved everything about this ryokan!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and caring staff, superb delicious breakfast and dinner . Our family really enjoy the stay and would recommend friends and relatives to stay here whenever they visit Matsumoto . The most enjoyable stay in my visit to all places of Japan . 10 out of 10

Pros: Look classic Superb staff
Cons: Too expensive
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Outside onsen is great, service is extremely friendly, we liked the futon beds and overall setting
Cons: I was disappointed with the dinner, not to my taste at all. The beef was very fatty, I could not eat, other things quite weird as well.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I enjoyed my whole stay at the hotel
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It is located on the hill, there might not be enough car parking but the staff there will handle the car for you. The hotel is quiet and clean. The room is very large.
Cons: The public hot spring is a bit small for the size of the hotel
8.0 Excellent
Pros: cosy onsen guest inn, full of Japanese character. Loved the private rooftop onsen was the best every night! That alone was worth it! Nice traditional dinner meals - full keiseki style. Got to have dinner at least once in the hotel. Very clean, huge rooms, comfy beds & daily tea snacks placed in your room. Service was fantastic, tea & cake upon arrival & check in, robes for the family, booked taxis, and helped with anything needed. Had a great relaxing stay.
Cons: Isolated & far from town or restaurants -it's a 25 min bus ride or approx ¥2000 taxi ride to station and downtown shops & restaurants. Happy to dine in hotel .... Meals were very nice & great service & attention to detail. Treated like a 5-star hotel guest. Otherwise ... nothing bad about the hotel.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent. I could not take beef and they replaced it with excellent pork and miso chicken. The beef that my wife took was excellent. Recommend to take their half board. The view from the room was nicely facing the mountain. It is a quite town which I like, far away of the busy city live.
Cons: The Japanese room was clean but a little outdated. Still I would recommend anyone to stay for 1 to 2 nights.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Just a positive experience. The staff is a family who owns the location, and they are very welcoming and kind. They were very hospitable, and me and my traveling companion want to return soon and stay in this area again, because of how kind the staff was, how interesting and comfortable the location and surrounding wilderness were, and how we were able to get to many interesting places without too much of a difficult drive. Ice cream was also terrific. There is also an area where guests can talk and play music. It was very nice. Furthermore, breakfast was delicious, I would recommend you get it in addition to your stay.
Cons: At night, the drive can be a little scary and disorienting. So be sure to have your path picked out.

Pros: This inn is located a quite area surrounded by natural environment. As we arrived there by public transportation, the host pick us up at bus station and also brought us to Onsen . We enjoy the snow shoe hiking at beautiful Norikura area and home-made food. In particular I’m a vegetarian, they prepared vegi special food to me, which was very delicious! We had unforgettable vacation at Norikura!
Cons: Nil. Everything is great!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very kind, helpful, and generous especially the "mother". She prepared a very delicious vegetarian dinner for me. She offered to give me umbrella upon check out since I did not have one and the weather forecast was raining for whole day. I also like the spacious shared shower room with big spring water hot tub. It has a view of the forest if you open up the large window. The room is also nice and cozy with greenery view. I like the onsen discount voucher very much too. The little birds at the garden were so cheerful and joyful. The husband and son are also nice people. The "son" is helpful in providing sightseeing information and the "father" is clear in his explanation of the house rules.
Cons: It's perfect. It would be nice if it has in house onsen though.
8.3 Excellent
Cons: Very kind owner. He was very welcome and gave us detailed explaintion on Kamakuchi

Pros: Loved staying at this hotel. Central position for mountain walks. Gorgeous views from room. Lovely Bath. Great food and helpful staff. Highly recommend
Cons: Leaving
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Magnificent view from my moutain-view room. Beautiful ambience. Excellent service and breakfast (except dinner in term of amount and variety, a room for improvement). We'll be back and stay here if we go to Kamikochi again.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: View from the room of the mountain is amazing and beautiful. It's location is super convenient, right next to kappa bridge and just 6 to 8min walk to the bus station.
Cons: Food is kind of expensive and captive as there are not a lot of options in the mountain. Inevitable but just be prepared.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were friendly and speaks English. I enjoyed my stay due to the friendliness of the staff, the quality dinner. The room size is comfortable. A lady staff at the front desk (regretfully did not take down her name) was thoughtful and caring to offer us umbrellas (left by guests previously stayed there) when knowing we have no umbrella to use after check out and it was raining heavily. Please note the hotel does not have a curfew after 7pm as stated when making booking. It was a mistake which I have clarified with the front desk. It applies to the main gate outside entering to the hotel's vicinity
Cons: The western fusion dinner served is of good quality although I was a bit disappointed to discover that it was not a traditional Japanese kaiseki cuisine style. Having said that, the presentation and the food quality was quite refined. I did suggest to replace the disposable chopsticks with a pair of regular chopsticks to match the overall formal standard of the dinner served. In hindsight, it may be a concern of hyiene consideration. But then again, they do offer both regular and disposable chopticks for their breakfast.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is the best, right at the Kappa bridge with an outstanding view if you have a mountain view room. Dinner was ok, the shop has variety of goods
Cons: Public bath is very very small, I think 3 people is the maximum capacity. You have to avoid the busy hours like before or after dinner. The amenities are lack of varieties, and not complete like other hotels' public bath. They don't even have a body lotion.

Pros: The outside public onsen is great and the view of hotel is awesome!
Cons: The indoor private onsen is not very clean and the staff did not mention about the outside private onsen !
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing view and great staff!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is very helpful and gave us a warm hospitality by providing detailed bus schedule and ensuring we got on the right bus. Excellent.
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was very traditional and very tasty
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great! We had made reservations for the 2.45pm shuttle bus and the ride up was comfortable and gave us great views of the mountains. Check in was efficient despite the high number of guests. They had allocated lounge seats at the lobby for our group of 5, with welcome drinks and snacks for us to nibble on while they checked us in. The bathing and onsen facilities were very clean and it was wonderful to have a soak in the outdoor onsen with the crisp autumn air. Dinner was very tasty, and breakfast was just as delicious. They also offer shuttle buses to Kamikochi and also back to Matsumoto - very convenient! For those who are concerned about wifi, it's mainly available at the lobby level and not so much in the rooms, but this is a minor issue when you're immersed in the breathtaking natural landscape of the Northern Japan Alps.
Cons: Slightly expensive but the entire experience is worth every yen.
7.0 Good
Pros: Great location to explore nearby region. The staff are fantastic, and will do anything to help. English a little limited so if this frustrates you not the place for you. The food was some of the best we had during our 2 week trip - and for two people who aren't too keen on fish it was perfect!
Cons: Very regimented time restraints for meals/bus leaving times etc. I can see why they do it but definitely not for everyone. Check out at 10am but shuttle only leaves at 12midday with little to do around there, not ideal. Overall the place is VERY tired and dirty - with a revamp though it could be perfect place to stay. Also, the futon mattress...SO uncomfortable!! Two worst nights sleep (no sleep) the whole trip, but easily rectified. Also very cold rooms, onset perfect to warm you up, but with a revamp and improved heating systems again, could be perfect due to staff, surroundings and food!!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: While a little difficult to reach (at the top of a mountain), it is less than three miles from the Japanese alps-kamacoshi national park. Unbelievable views even from the bedroom. Lots of good food, but traditional Japanese. Great baths, and wonderful staff.
Cons: The pillows were also traditional, and I don’t really love traditional Japanese breakfasts. But that is my fault, not theirs!

Pros: The french dinner on the first night was very good. The roast beef was just so tender.Everything was beautifully plated and presentation was excellent. The second night we had japanese food like kaiseki style and again the food surpassed my expectations. The breakfast buffet was the best part. They served succulent japanese melons. There were free drinks from 5.30 pm onwards in the lobby which included coffee, tea and soft drinks .The onsen also had 4 massage chairs. They provided free aromatherapy burner in the room
Cons: As with most japanese hotels, there is only one hard pillow provided.Bed was hard too.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: What an amazing hotel in an amazing place! The room was absolutely gorgeous, the view was incredible and the staff was very nice and helpful. It’s not cheap but once in a while it’s totally worth it :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a fantastic stay here, and very worth the money. The food was fantastic, the room was lovely, the onsen was stunning, and the location of the hotel was perfect, right on the river but still slightly removed from all the tourists by the bridge. Short walk from the bus terminal too. I’m vegetarian and they were happy to accommodate me and make some delicious food, which I was very grateful for.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's our third time staying with Lemeiesta as we go hiking in Kamikochi. The hotel is extremely cozy and comfortable. We had a twin room facing the river and the mountain and the view was amazing! Good choice for breakfast and dinner was just exceptional! We stayed for two nights and enjoyed a French style dinner for the first night and French+Japanese style for the second, and both nights were equally enjoyable! Especially love their roast beef on the first night! The staff were always nice and friendly and they speak good English. The onsen is clean and neat and totally enjoyable! Adding pampering and comforts after a full day hiking in the area. The hotel is located about 20 minutes walk from the Kappa Bridge, between mountains and river, a lovely and peaceful location a bit away from the most touristy Kappa Bridge area. We stayed in hotels near the Kappa Bridge before and we prefer this location a lot more. For sure we will go back to Lemeiesta again!
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Very good location in the centre of the city. Nice staff, good breakfast
Cons: .
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location midway between Matsumoto Station and the Castle. The room was larger than is usual in Japan and very well appointed. There were also a number of small additional touches, such as bath salts and slippers we could keep, that were very nice. Staff were very courteous and pleasant to deal with.
Cons: Nothing we didn’t like about the property.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The room is comfortable and quite
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very efficient operational system: Check in with friendly staff, pay with vending machine in advance (avoiding having to wait in line to check out and pay later.) Room is sizable for Japan. Clean and newly decorated. Basic, but has everything you need. Excellent location. Within a 5 min walk to train station. Very close to supermarket. Best point: Has 24/7 diner right at the ground level. Food is not gourmet but not bad (like Denny's). Plus, it's very reasonably priced. (I paid $70 US a night in April.) This hotel is the best hidden gem in Matsumoto. I actually prefer it way more than Buena Vista, which is supposed to be the most "luxurious" business hotel in town.
Cons: No gym, but neither does Buena Vista.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Easy to find from the train station. Includes breakfast. Clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay there again.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean. Clean. Clean. Friendly staff who spoke enough English to effectively deal with non-Niponggo speakers. Breakast was good with lots of variety. There's a 7-11 store a block away and a really good ramen and gyoza place across the street.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable rooms with plenty of space for 2 with luggage. The views of the snowy mountain peaks from our window was a real bonus. There were a lot of little extras in the room too. We thought the location was perfect - in the main city centre about 5 mins walk from the station and about 15 mins pleasant walk from the castle. We did not try any of the food offerings so cant comment.
Cons: Lack of an opening window but that is a minor quibble.
