Pros: The territory with all the animals, birds and jungles is amazing. The food and restaurants (including main buffet) are really great. Interesting entertainment in the evening. Cocktails are delicious.

Cons: Rooms are too simple for such a beautiful hotel.

Pros: What a wonderful resort.. one of the best we have stayed at.. the staff were wonderful.. very polite, friendly and extremely hard working. The food was fantastic! And so many options for all types and ages. Lots of activities available for all.

Cons: There are two classes of residents; normal and prestige.. with prestige; you get everything the others get plus.. extra beds on the beach, free massage, late check out.. access to the prestige lounge etc.. prestige class didn’t follow in the rooms though.. very small and dated.. which was a shame.. as there was 4 of us.. the room didnt resemble the photo of the room I booked. Sun beds availability around the pool will always be an issue.. people reserving with towels.. It’s the same issue at every resort. It was a sad day when we left. If you organize a trip.. do it at the store just outside the resort.. same for inflatables and balls. The exchange rate is better at the hotel than we got at the airport. Tipping / paying in pesos is better (for you)...

Cons: The resort is old and very outdated. Not clean. Staff wasn’t very friendly. Clientele was frightening. Food was very bad even for an all inclusive. I didn’t know enough about this chain at the time of booking but I would never stay at one of these resorts again.

Pros: The location is just perfect: authentic, not overbuilt, in the middle of the rain forest, with animals roaming around free - what a delight for kids and adults alike! The facilities are clean and compact and at the same time everything is there for every taste, including a good gym and multiple restaurants. The food is absolutely delicious and the variety is striking - I have no idea how they manage! The service at restaurants is fabulous: staff are friendly and ready to serve even when you can clearly reach out and get your coffee by yourself. There are two large swimming pools and we loved both.

Cons: The beach was a bit disappointing as on 8 out of 10 days of our stay there were loads of sea weeds and the cleaners simply could not catch up. We were told by staff that this was a recent phenomenon most likely attributable to the climate change. Lots of credit to staff who relentlessly tried to remove as much weeds as possible. Apart from that, the beaches are kept clean of plastic and other human pollution.

Pros: Staff was incredible! The resort was spotless, they had activities going. Good food and drinks when're you wanted.

Pros: Loved the landscaping with leaving things natural & the animals. Pool was awesome, beautiful beach & friendly staff. Al a carte restaurants were good.

Cons: Buffet foods overall were nothing special. The desserts were pretty but no flavor. Only the ice cream was good.

Pros: Location, staff and facilities were wonderful. Only negative was that the spa prices were too expensive. Also it would be nice if room service was offered for breakfast.

Cons: Room service not offered for breakfast. Also didn't like the fact that we had to pay extra when we checked in to get connecting rooms.

Pros: The food at the buffet was great, and I also really liked the food at the Tex-Mex restaurant. The bar waitress was really on top her game and came often to check if we wanted drinks. I liked the nature life there (howler monkeys, flamingos, toucans etc.). The beach was beautiful and well taking care of. I liked the concept of the pool bar, but it didn't have enough sunlight.

Cons: I didn't like the fact that there is no disco on the premises, although there is easy access to Playa del Carmen downtown. And I didn't appreciate that when I got my room cleaned the maid never cleaned the floor. I also would've liked it if they had an adult only pool. I didn't appreciate that the staff lets people reserve the beds around the pool for hours without even showing up, when it clearly states on signs that you can't do that! The Sunday night show was very strange and I think they should think about replacing the theme of that night! Lastly, I think there should be a 24h bar on the premises as well, everything was shut off by 2.

Pros: Everything!! The food, the activities, the kids club, the hotel itself, but above all- the amazing staff!!

Pros: - The resort is located directly on the beach and has a beautiful tropical garden with animals. - The pool was spacious.

Cons: - We didn't have an incredible experience with a couple of staff members who were unhelpful and sometimes downright rude. - The quality of the food was poor and at the best times below average even in the restaurants where we booked dinner. - The quality of the alcohol was poor. - There seemed to be constant exception to the all inclusive stay which were quite restrictive. - The rooms were quite aged and even the bed covers were old and scratchy/itchy.

Pros: The accommodations were wonderful; rooms were beautiful. The evening restaurants were good. The grounds are beautifully kept. We enjoyed the evening showing and the pool/beach activities. Easy 10 minute walk to PlayaCar for souvenirs.

Cons: The buffet for breakfast and lunch was only so so. There is no hair conditioner in the bathrooms. Our room had mosquitos but once reported they fumigated and then no other bug issues inside.

Pros: Great pools, opportunity to get a Bali bed for free if you get up early enough.

Cons: The only A/C's areas (outside of some of the a la carte restaurants) were my room and the sports bar next door. Also, the app is useless for making dinner reservations.

Pros: Living in the forest is awesome! Animals is everywhere.Kids love it. The buffet is great. The staffs is very friendly.

Cons: The fridge in our room does not work.

Pros: The grounds are beautiful, impeccably cleaned, the jungle animals are fun to watch.

Pros: The Iberostar Tucan / Quetzal is one of my favorite resorts in the Mexican Rivera Maya. The dining buffets are fine, and there's always some food offered that you've never tried. It's fun to experiment with new tastes. This was my fourth visit. The staff are very courteous and speak several languages. The fun begins with the jungle in the center of the resort. A large canopy of trees with well lit winding paths takes you from your room to the waterfront pools. New additions this year included a balcony overlooking the flamingo pond, a boardwalk in the center of the jungle, and a new waterfall with Mayan statues hidden in the rocks. The wild animals living in the jungle run free and appear tame, but you are warned not to feed them. Peacocks are everywhere, and you can get some great photos of the males spreading out their huge feathers. If you stay near buildings 14 and 13 expect to have howler monkeys swinging through the treetops to get to their feeding areas. They wake up at dawn with ferocious howls that remind you that, yes, you are far from home and now in a tropical paradise.

Cons: A surprise this time was the renovation of one of the buffet restaurants, what was once an intimate rustic buffet is now a separated modern glass and steel food service area with a longer walk to your table. I preferred the rustic design but was told Iberostar plan to remodel the other buffet restaurants with the same bright white modern sterile design.

Pros: The beach and pool are amazing and HUGE! The food in the restaurants was excellent. The food at the buffet was good. They did a great job of trying to include foods at the buffet that would appeal to guests from all countries, and it gave us a chance to try different foods that we would never typically order in a restaurant. There were always snacks and ice cream available by the pool, which was great. The entertainment staff, Star Friends, was amazing! They work around the clock to entertain the guests and always seem to have activities, games, or shows going on that are actually entertaining, whether you're participating or just watching. The nightly shows were a bit hit or miss, but they get an A+ for effort and enthusiasm. For some of the shows, they brought in professional dancers or entertainers and those were excellent. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The refrigerator was restocked daily with water, soda, and beer. The drinks were weak, but we liked that since we could drink all day at the beach and all night at the bars without being too affected by the alcohol! The disco was a great place to listen to music and relax at night after the shows. It wasn't very busy when we were there, but the bartenders were amazing and so friendly! We never felt pressured to tip anyone, and they almost seemed surprised when we did tip them. Overall, our trip was amazing!

Cons: This did not bother me, but it is not a fancy "luxury" resort, so people with extremely high standards or expensive taste might want to stay elsewhere.

Pros: Very family and kid friendly, food was great.

Cons: No elevators, making it a little difficult when you have to get around with children and a stroller. Food at the buffet was always good but never really warm when served.

Pros: The location and the beach were terrific. Staff was very nice and attentive, especially at the various restaurants. The variety, quality, and presentation of meals, outstanding. The restaurants excellent.

Cons: The concierge assigned to our building was not very efficient (forgot to make a couple of reservations that we needed) but other staff members made up for this.

Pros: Great Location and Beach, nice property and rooms.

Cons: High Focus on US tourists, unauthentic taste of food and preferred treatment for US tourists, Dinner time to be reserved with only very early and late options if reservation is not done days or weeks in advance , but empty tables in the restaurant all the time. For example only available time at Palazzo was 10pm, but then we were the ONLY one in the restaurant and it closes at 10.30, so you are always in a rush to eat and order. Happened very similar the evening before in the Asian as well. Absolutely not understandable and not reflecting the standard the Hotel has. Breakfast and dinner at Mexican Restaurant have been far below expectations on the usually great Mexican Cusine. I would strongly recommend to stay more authentic there.

Pros: We visited The Royal Hideaway (RH) for our honeymoon and stayed for 5 full days. Family and close friends recommended we stay here and wow... we are so glad we came. Our expectations were exceeded in terms of amenities, staff, food, provided activities and entertainment. After staying here it makes sense why we have run into so many people who have been here multiple times (one couple had been here 11 times!!!). The RH is very intimate with lots of friendly guests here from all over the world. Also we LOVED the Mexican Fiesta dinner on Wednesday night. The dancers were amazing, the food was incredible (we found out the head chef here has a few Michelin stars, so cool!). When you come here make sure you ask for Alejandro to wait on you at the hibachi/ sushi restaurant, Azia. He is the best waiter I have ever had (in both America and abroad) so knowledgeable about the menu, super friendly, and phenomenally professional. Also, our hostess at Spices (her name is Karla) was so great. She has such a sweet spirit and was so kind to my wife and I.

Cons: It would be really helpful if the Royal Hideaway provided a recommended tipping guide for guests during their stay. Although RH is all inclusive, we like to tip the staff members (room service, housekeeping, concierge, wait staff, bartenders, etc.) but there isn’t any reference guide as to how to go about doing so. We really enjoyed the amazing service and would love to be able to award such service for a job well done. Being from American, it is hard to know if the money being tipped (for instance $1 USD per drink at the poolside bar) is a good tip or not. We would love more activities to participate in. We did Salsa dancing one day, rode bikes, and used the free snorkel gear for the allotted hour. More couples classes would be great!

Pros: The room, facilities, beach, food.

Cons: The concierge was never around. Our villa had none and they did not tell us. Reservation only dinners but without a concierge we could not get them. We also requested ground floor six months in advance and paid to upgrade due to my husband having knee surgery and they did not honor. He ended up having to see a doctor in town! The front desk staff is unresponsive and have poor communication skills!

Pros: All staff are super friendly and helpful throughout the resort. The wait staff were absolutely amazing tending to guests both on the beach front and poolside, and the food was great!

Cons: It was sometimes difficult to connect with the villa concierge who books in dinner for you, especially when you're on back to back day tours that require you to be picked up prior to the start of their working hours and return once they have left for the day.

Pros: The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are enjoying yourself and get the most out of your stay. The entire location is beautiful and never seemed over crowded.

Cons: It only happened once but a restaurant was short staffed for a night resulting in a extremely long dinner service that prevented us from other activities planned for that night.

Pros: Many Thanks to all staff! Our vacation was very great! And location is good. Will recommend to all friends.

Cons: Some representatives need to practice English more, but it’s not a problem

Pros: Very high class experience starting as soon as you pull up and the bellboys come out to open your door. Facilities are nice. Pools are pretty good. The restaurants are pretty good especially those with a more formal dress code. There is a very nice beach that they keep clean with equipment. They must make their own ice cream. It is really good.

Cons: They don't seem to be able to cook an egg properly. The breakfast and lunch buffets are barely average. I would expect better for the price. Also the service at lunch and room service was always slow for us. We are talking 25 minutes for a lunch order and 40 minutes to get room service to bring ice cream. On cooler days the "hot pools" just aren't warm enough. The small pools by the sand and the pool closest to our room were not kept clean.

Pros: Great service, good food and nice palapa style bungalows to stay in giving it a good deal of privacy despite the size. The beach and restaurants adjacent to it are beautiful.

Cons: Nada.

Pros: It was close enough to shopping and restaurants yet the tranquility and lush gardens all around the resort and our palapa villa provided such tranquility. It was absolute paradise. the pools are amazing. Both restaurants Great too!

Cons: The beaches are not swimmable because of the seaweed that is on all the beaches. There should at least be coffee makers in the rooms. There is free coffee on the beach side of Fuegos, but the receptionist said I had to go to the restaurant for coffee??

Pros: The service from all staff was exceptional. We travelled during unprecedented times which could have made the holiday more testing for everyone. This was our second time here and the level of care and attention did not disappoint. We have enjoyed every minute of our stay although it was under difficult circumstances. We left with heavy hearts as we do so enjoy this resort. The meals were on point and varied, the service excellent and the rooms well appointed. It was a pleasure to not have a TV in the room as a distraction. I cannot speak too highly of The Mahekal and its staff as it will be our next destination once the situation we find ourselves in has settled down.

Cons: I think I have said everything I do like & can't think of anything I don't like. This is a special resort which hopefully will ride the storm...

Pros: I don’t have enough words to explain how great is everything in Mahekal! This place exceeded all my expectations and I can assure you that this is not an easy job. The staff is so friendly, that you will remember them forever! The food is great! The room is perfectly clean! Just a step away from 5th ave and right on the beach. Highly recommend to everyone that is looking for a good vacation!

Pros: Lovely and beautifully manicured landscape. Love the palapa style rooms with private balconies. The hamacas are a welcome touch! All the staff, regardless of their job, are very friendly, accommodating and courteous. The variety of food options and on-site restaurants was amazing. Enjoyed the feeling of being away from everything and at the same time so close to Playa's main street. Will definitely return again early in 2021.

Cons: Tried to charge us for a lot of incremental things, better room, additional guests in the room. We booked a boat through the concierge and they messed up all the information including the pick up time etc and then were not helpful at all

Pros: The breakfast was exceptional, a wide variety of food and even prosecco which was a nice touch. The master suite we had was really nice, very large and clean. There were two bathrooms which I liked, and a very large balcony.

Cons: The shower pressure was very low and the water wasn't that hot. When I asked for it to be fixed, they had two men come to look at it, to which they just told me that it was indeed hot and there was nothing they could do. We were on the floor underneath the roof and in the mornings (6:30am) you could hear people moving furniture about which woke us up every morning.

Pros: Large and spacious room. Hotel located 2 minutes walk from Playa del Carmen. Very nice and helpful staff. Great, tasty breakfasts. Amazing rooftop pool with a relaxation area and a sea view.

Cons: The only negative was the smell of moisture in the room.

Pros: Cleanliness. Overall food quality is okay, although the food option is quite limited.

Cons: WORST HOTEL EXPERIENCE EVER 1. NO SHOW for BREAKFAST SERVICE. I waited more than 40 mins for it and had to gave up. Note that this happened even though I confirmed with staff the night before and they took my request form from the doorknob. NO APOLOGY whatsoever. 2. THEY LIE ABOUT THE RESTAURANT HOURS and would REFUSE you to order/come in if it’s late. The official hour is until 10:30 pm and I double confirmed with the staff that I can get the last order by 10:30. But when I went down for late dinner around 10:17, guys shouted at me that the kitchen is CLOSED at 10:15. I questioned this and the guy said: “Not my problem! It is closed!” 3. STAFF UNDERTRAINED. Reservation is required for the teriyaki restaurant at the REEF COCO. You must be at the desk 9-6 and only one person can “handle” the reservation. I was on a diving trip so it is almost impossible. A staff kindly messaged to the person for me and informed me that the earliest possible time is 6:30. Next day, the person in charge absolutely have no idea of my situation. She had to open the system to check. So my name was in the reservation but it was at 6:00. She asked me to WALK FAST if I still wants to get in. So I did, sweated like sh**. But it turned out the course did not start until approaching 6:30!! Low quality food, terribly cooked. (Super bland) 4. NO RESTAURANT AFTER 10:30. NO ROOM SERVICE AFTER 12. 5. Safety- sometimes they check your identity but most of the time they ignore it. 6. LIMITED FOOD CHOICE. ONLY TWO RESTAURANTS operating for dinner & ONE operating during lunchtime. Between 3-6 you have to go through the room service. 7. RIDICULOUS PRICE for shuttle service. 90 USD ONE-WAY!! (ADO bus is like $10). 8. No way to heat up the room, although it can be quite chilly in March. I felt so cold that I could not sleep well at all for three nights. 9. NO ”ALL-INCLUSIVE” option. Charge you extra for steaks. At the teriyaki restaurant, 10 USD to change to shrimp and 15/30 USD for lobster.

Cons: Rooms are not sound proof. We could hear everything that was happening in the room communicating with ours (zero privacy). Also, as the patio is very big, the eco at night is vey loud!

Pros: The Asian restaurant food/drinks were great. The rooftop bar food was great. Basically, almost all the food is very good. The cocktail menu is mostly what you will be choosing from for drinks. The rooms are very big and comfy and get cleaned very nicely. The staff organizing excursions are very friendly and helpful. The spa is amazing!

Cons: You have to accept the fact you will be unable to sleep before 2 am. There is so much noise going on, both outside as well as reverberating inside from the rooftop. Basically, in your room, you can listen to 3 parties at once. Why 2 am? Then it probably legally has to stop everywhere. Little selection of whisky, only the typical bland ones. It takes a long time to get food, but that seems to be in most of Playa del Carmen.
