9.0 Excellent
Pros: Food were great both dinner and breakast . Enormous and delicious as advertise. Car pick up service, nice view,
Cons: Nothing much near the hotel so they should have something entertain in the hotel. There are just karaoke and pingpong table .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Property location
Cons: Breakfast
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The meals, the service and the view from room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor public onsen overseeing the ocean is excellent. Traditional Japanese meals inside the room, big meals with a serving lady present. Friendly staffs.
Cons: Couple free private onsens on the rooftop are quite small and without indoor changing rooms. There's a free private indoor family onsen with an indoor changing room yet without the ocean view. However there're couple onsen suites available at a charge. The overall dining experience was positive and interesting. I just didn't know how to deal with the odour left after having the meals inside the room. I opened the windows to let fresh air in (plus listening to the sound of the wave), only to find myself invited an unpleasant guest, Mr. Mosquito, who disturbed my sleep.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very delicious seafoods served in dinner and breakfast.
Cons: Would be better if some room equipped with private hot spring bath.
8.3 Excellent
Cons: I enjoyed its stay comfortable and nice ocean view from my room. Ar for dinner and breakfast dishes are too much. Delishas but too much dishes , then better for adjusting the price. Thank you,
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Top quality seafood and meals served in spacious and comfortable room. Lovely sea view onsen. Excellent omotenashi.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was exceptional! The English speaking members were incredibly helpful and kind and went far beyond the expected to help us find places to enjoy in the area. The food was wonderful. The setting peaceful and lovely sea views and close to local highlights. So glad we chose the Hotel Hamanoyu. We highly recommend.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and garden area
Cons: I liked everything but a view of the ocean for that would have been great. I wanted to enter the bath at 13:00 but it was closed until 14:30. I would love if there was an option for a tatami room...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view
Cons: None
6.7 Good
Pros: Hotel is on the beach which is lovely. It is 15 minutes walk from Kawazu station. Hotel was very clean and staff friendly. Rooms for two are spacious and a decent balcony where three people can sit out.
Cons: Breakfast is expensive and not worth it if you cannot eat much in the morning. The restaurants have limited food for vegetarians and also seafood eaters. You need reservations for the Shangri-La and it is super expensive too for what they serve. The bar opens in the afternoon and then at 7 pm and all restaurants and bar shuts at 9 pm. This was quite disappointing especially as there are not many restaurants around Kawazu either. Although off-season, it would be much nicer to have restaurants open for most hours of lunch and dinner, no reservation needed (esp since this is a holiday and we can not stress about timing and plan what to eat in advance). The beach did not have any deckchairs, and the Onsen was pretty small. Overall not the resort experience I have had before in other places.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen bath was neat and tidy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stayed here as I wanted to be near the beach to mix it up a bit from my snowboarding holiday. This hotel is in a great spot right on the beach. It was winter so didn't go in the water as was freezing. I'm a surfer so was keen to just check out some of the spots in Japan for a bit of a look. The day we arrived there was about a 2m swell and surfable waves straight on the front with a few people surfing. I think the place needs a decent swell to break. There are also some other surf spots within a close drive. You can get a train to the nearby station and hotel has a free shuttle to station however we drove. I think you really needed a car to properly explore this area and was glad that we had one. The hotel facilities were good, onsen was really nice and pool looked like it would be good in the warmer months, was closed in winter. Hotel is very clean and well maintained and grounds are nice. There is also free parking which can sometimes be hard to find in Japan. Breakfast was really good. For an Australian that doesn't eat seafood and travelling to an area renowned for seafood and knowing Japanese style breakfast incorporate seafood I was a bit concerned. But all was good, heaps of non seafood options, cereals, bacon and eggs, pasteries, tea and coffee, fruit, breakfast was great. It was buffet style and we ate enough that we only needed a small lunch to keep us going all day. I should mention that my partner is Japanese and loved the Japanese breakfast options and ate lots of seafood. Overall i would recommend this place and the surrounding area if you are looking for a chilled out beach holiday away from the crowds of Tokyo. If your looking for surf there are plenty of options around provided there is swell, and different set ups for different winds as well.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: incredible location and view from window. right on the beach, with a beachside terrace and pool. can hear the ocean clearly from guest rooms, even with windows closed. exactly what i was looking for for a beach trip. conveniently positioned. hotel offers free shuttle bus to kawazu station, but you can also just walk 2 minutes to imaihama kaigan station and take a 2 minute train down. outdoor onsen and sauna were very enjoyable. excellent food at shangri la. pricey but not unreasonable.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: facility and view are amazing!
Cons: Only when we arrived at the hotel, we were told dinner would not be available. Luckily there are couple of good food around the corner. But would be better if we could be informed beforehand. Cos normally all of onsen hotels will have food available.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The place was absolutely beautiful. The view from our spacious room was spectacular. Comfortable if you don't mind futon beds on the floor. The staff was very friendly but could hardly speak English but we were able to get by.
Cons: No food served at the hotel and if you don't have transportation, there was very little choices; one Chinese noodle place and a Japanese restaurant which we ate at was good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was beyond excellent. There was always a staff member who could speak enough English with me that I was very comfortable. The onsen baths are amazing. Each one a little different and unique. The food was so fresh and creative and beautiful and delicious. Thank you for a great experience and a window into the Japanese culture.
Cons: I wish the app would have given the option to book dinner on my first night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The traditional Ryokan was excellent. We had booked two nights but had to cancel the second night due 6o typhoon Hagibis and they were very accommodating. The place was clean and the hot baths amazing. It's a shame we didn't get more nights here and to enjoy the seafood dinner.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: The service provided by the staff was excellent, we felt very welcome. Kudos especially to the bellman in particular who made an effort to converse with us (using a translator), making recommendations for dinner and helping to keep a look out for us. Breakfast was awesome with a great spread, one of the best that we have had during our recent sojourn to Japan. I highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Shimoda.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Located next to the beach. Nice rooms and facilities. Train Station Shuttle Bus.
Cons: Breakfast and Dinner rather expensive. Bringing food from outside not allowed. Not too many alternatives nearby during offseason. Therefor some wending machines inside though.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: The weather
6.0 Good
Pros: Great location with views of Tatadohama beach. The baths are attractive; we booked the Pine spa during sunset which was awesome. Great Japanese style Breakfast including (pre-booked) vegetarian option. Very clean rooms.
Cons: Generally tatty and run down. No vegetarian option for dinner so did not book the half-board package, which meant we did not get the additional services including turning beds down. Somewhat inflexible shuttle bus, for late arrivals you have to take a taxi.
7.0 Good
Cons: I was a bit surprised not to have a staff make the bed (as I had in another hotel of the same status / prestige in Takayama): no big deal. However, as I made my bed, I could see some major (old blood?) stains on the mattresses: this was the only pitfall of the overall experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a real find. Though it is not a traditional ryokan the room I had felt like one and had a great view of the beach and headland. Food was amazing too.
Cons: In some places there musty odors. Also, not a fault of the property but it’s a shame the other guests did not take advantage of the yukatas and it wails had lent a more traditional Japanese feel.
7.0 Good
Pros: The hotel has a family oriented beach resort authenticity and I valued being able to experience a traditional room, futon and all Very warm staff and responsive service The beach and coastal setting is remarkable Dinner in the upperrestaurant was a pleasure
Cons: The old lower level recreation areas are shabby and need renovation soon. Shimoda township and other dinig options isn't a walk away - its a taxi ride
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view is perfect! And the service is good.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great open air baths next to 30m waterfall! Big and spacious room. Nice dinner and breakfast. Free drinks in lobby.
Cons: We had asked for one western and one Japanese breakfast, which was confirmed beforehand, but then we got two Japanese ones, so they had to change that, which caught the kitchen crew a bit unawares. But that was only a minor thing compared to all the great stuff the hotel has on offer!

Pros: Like a home .. comfort and kindly warmth
Cons: Hot water of the sink didn’t come out

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service is excellent! More than we can expect! Onsen is real natural one. Food is awesome! Never had anything better, it was a smart choice to book the dinner and breakfast in the package!
Cons: The room is a little bit bright at night, some windows are the paper shades, not dark enough for sensible sleepers.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Their food is why we keep coming back. Absolute feast
Cons: We love everything
7.9 Good
Pros: The food is amazing, very abundant in seafood and beautifully presented. Service was exceptional and the hot springs were lovely especially the outdoor rainforest one, being able to book private sessions is a bonus.
Cons: The Ryokan is situated in a somewhat tired and rundown town, there isn’t much to do in the area and the ryokan is right next to the train station so there is no view or grounds to explore.
4.6 Okay
Pros: The hotel is a little run down, but clean and and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast was nice, but not served in the room.
Cons: There is literally nothing around the hotel. The town is very run down. This is my 3rd time in Japan and we encountered the worst costumer service in Japan, or simply anywhere around the world. We had trouble with our credit card payment, and the lady at the front desk gave us the biggest attitude ever. Her attitude changed 180 degrees in a second, after we tried twice and both failed - from all smiling, bowing, to refuse to say anything to us and it looked like she was genuinely disgusted by us. I'm still shocked till today that someone can do that. It turned out to be their credit card machine's problem, because I made a big purchase right after leaving and it worked perfectly. But even if it is our credit card's problem, NO ONE should never react that way. It was simply unacceptable. People always mention Japanese people have this "fake nice", and this is the first time I experienced it. I did not spend $800 dollar there to receive their attitude like this. It literally ruined my trip to Japan and made me question the entire country as a whole. Because of this experience, I don't plan to go visit Japan in the next couple of years at least.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: the room rate includes hot spring and breakfast& dinner. The breakfast and dinner is absolutely excellent, definitely worth the price. All staffs are extremely friendly and helpful. You can feel that you're warmly welcomed and treated like their family. They prepared everything in detail for you to enjoy the hot spring and stay.
Cons: none
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: A bit old but the onsen and sand bath are good
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We had breakfast and dinner and they are authentically Japanese. A unique flavour of Izu. Private onsen in our room and outside our room (have to reserve in advance) was also fantastic. Very friendly and eager to serve and helpful counter and restaurant staff. Nearby is train station. Quite near to Kawazu to watch hanami. 20 minute drive. Can also take train
Cons: Suggestions for Improvements: 1. The wooden disposable chopsticks should be of better quality. They broke easily. 2. Hotel staff should wear mask to protect themselves and guests during this period with coronavirus outbreak.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The food! I can skip lunch and have only breakfast and dinner here! So many of them and all delicious. Located near Izu-atagawa station.
Cons: Musty smell in room

Pros: the view and room were brilliant, overall the hotel was lovely staff were friendly and helpful, easily accessed from kawazu station by free shuttle or on foot from Imaihama-kaigan station, would not hesitate to recommend
7.9 Good
Pros: The room was comfortable and clean, the location is convenient and breakfast is very traditional.
Cons: The Wi-Fi connection stopped several times, we had to change the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view from our room was exceptional.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We had four relaxing days at this hotel. Very unique experience in a traditional Japanese room. Staff always tries their best to make your stay comfortable. The outdoor Onsen is great! Many good restaurants are within 15 minutes Waking distance in Kawazu.
6.7 Good
Pros: Room was so clean
Cons: One staff was so rude to us
7.1 Good
Pros: 1. The room is very commodious and has direct sea view. 2. As for the private bath, there is a water tap right next to the Onsen, so you could actually adjust the temperature when the spring becomes too hot. 3. In the lobby there are many beautiful Yukata in different color and you could choose your favorite one!
Cons: 1. Hair dryer I have used the hairdryer not only in our room, but also in the public bath and also in the private bath. The one in the private bath is the best among these three, but the one in the room totally sucks and that really annoys me!! :( Why on earth do they put the worst one in the room? I don’t really get that. 2. Also couldn’t figure out why the staff were so stingy with hanger. He seemed to be so impatient while we asked for more hangers (The ones in the closet were apparently not enough for the clothes that we have washed). 3. This is the third Onsen hotel that we have ever been to. In other hotels, the staff would put drinking water in the onsen area, since the hot spring can easily dehydrate the body. We were so thirsty after spending half an hour in the tub, but disappointedly, could not find any water to drink in private bath. Note that the private bath is not free (even more expensive than one of the best Onsen hotels in Hakone/Fuji area), they should have provided better service accordingly. 4. We find the air conditioner/ventilator system in the room extremely annoying. There are only three modes (You can’t choose the temperature) and even if you choose the mode with weak/low fan power, it’s freezing cold... If you turn the AC off, then the room becomes so muggy… Plus, not sure if it is because the air vents were not cleaned efficiently or because of the Yukata, both my family and I had allergy and got rashes all over our body while we were staying at this hotel. (Definitely not because of what we have eaten for we were both aware of our allergen) 5. There were basically no restaurants or convenient store next to the hotel. You have to take the JR line and go to Kawazu station. (Again, causing many inconvenience if you didn’t reserve dinner/breakfast at the hotel)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The biggest room during my trip, also the view is so nice. They have nice breakfast and snacks offer. Will visit again.
