Kirishima Kanko Hotel - Kirishima - Building

7.9 Good (1,267 reviews)

Overview Reviews
Located in Kirishima, Kirishima Kanko Hotel is a 1-minute drive from Maruo Falls and 8 minutes from Mahoroba no Sato. Featured amenities include a computer station and luggage storage. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was extensive but very Japanese. Virtually no international choices. The quality was definitely good, without a doubt, but for us it was limited in choice w.r.t. non-Japanese options. Very peaceful location close to many hot springs and the hills. Beautiful scenery around, but make sure you have your own transportation, as the location is only close to a very small town and relatively remote. But it's an easy jump for day trips in the hills around with many interesting places to visit besides just hot springs. Great also for nature walks. The (Japanese) room was sizable - we were upgraded to that room as we could only book it originally for 1 night only due to availability. That was a well-appreciated gesture. The hot spring pool in the hotel is open early and until past 11 pm, which is nice option after a long day.
Cons: Breakfast starts early and no new arrivals after 08:30. Closes prompt at 09:00. Which means even if you're on a leisure vacation, with young kids and getting them ready you'll have to get up at the crack of dawn to ensure you don't miss breakfast. There should be a bit more flexibility there. Check out is at 10:00. Receiving a call at 10:01 because we were not at the front desk yet (having luggage and 2 young children to bring from different towers through different elevators) we found a bit insensitive. We were at the front desk at 10:05... Come on guys!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Our room was large and very comfortable with a stunning view. The hot spa was lovely .
Cons: Limited choices to eat
7.1 Good
Pros: They well indicated the public transport in the web. However, one should draw particular attention to each of the station and bus stop in their local name. The panorama onsen was magnificent. The room were also spacious with good view.
Cons: I arrived the Hotel around 14:00 before their official check in time. I wondered if it was the rest time for the staff so that they were not keen for my registration. The staff allowed my luggage to be left in an open area aside from the counter and without any guarding. I was quite surprising that there was no staff to be attended in the counter and lobby. They could only be shown up until you ring the bell. Besides, as crowds of outsiders could admit to the panorama onsen, I could only enjoy a calm and peaceful bath until the early morning. Since the Hotel accommodated a lot of guests, the Kaiseki dinner was served in a big dining hall with a rapid pace. They also provided different dinner menus which were not stated in the Booking.com.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The onsens were fantastic. You have 3 different baths to choose from depending on the time. Breakfast was really good as well. tons of parking, location was good. Close too many attractions around the area.
Cons: The washroom in my room looked super old, even a bit of rust on the tap.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The price is well justified
Cons: Onsen was under renovation
8.3 Excellent
Pros: It is easily accessible by public transport or by car from the KOJ airport. We had a mountain view room heading to the onsen street seeing ample white steams.
Cons: Our guest room needs renovation to the toilet and bath in the coming schedule as I thought they are the most frequent occupied and worn out part and area. The south wing had been under renovation and some onsen facilities were closed. Garden terrace will be a good relaxing place filled with season plants though I didn’t enter and enjoy in winter time.

Pros: The hotel is located in a beautiful landscape, perfect for hiking and to watch the stars at night. Both breakfast and dinner were really delicious and the staff reacted very friendly to my friends special food requests, both in advance as well as on the spot. But the best about this hotel it's is huge onsen facility with various types of water.

Pros: Very good facilities at a reasonable price. It's very rare for hotels in Japan to have a gym, which was great. Comfortable rooms, decent restaurant options, and a nice-looking bar on the top floor. There are a handful of restaurants not too far away on foot, too, including an excellent little izakaya called Kohki Japanese Dining. Definitely recommendable!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are very helpful. They make every possible means to arrange shuttle bus (free of charge) for us. Both indoor & open air onsen are good.
Cons: Room is a little bit old & renovation is needed.
7.1 Good
Pros: The set dinner in the room was tasty and very large portion. The public bath is very large, compare to other places. I believe all rooms are not facing the mountain so every room should have a good view.
Cons: The property is looking old and could use some renovation. There were several tour buses on the day we stayed so the hotel was quite crowded. The service was lacking as we told we would have the dinner in the room at 7PM when we checked in but we were waiting until 7:15 PM and decided to ask the front desk for our dinner. They apologize for their tardiness and hurriedly prepare our meal.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Traditional style rooms, with modern facilities (toilet, AC, TV). Very kind and welcoming hostess. Nice onsen at the property. Great place to start kirishima mountains hike. 10 walk from maruo center (tourist information, convenience store). Very quite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The excellent courteous and attentive service
6.3 Good
Pros: We stayed at different Minshuku's on our trip across Kyushu. This place was very basic and wasn't as comfortable as others. It is located south of the town center, which is still in walkable distance. We found a nice restaurant in town. Although it was not perfect, it still was a good base for trips to the region.
Cons: -
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owners really made me feel at home. I never met such polite hosts: they took care of me like they were my grandmas, providing me with snacks, tea and suggestions. Room was really clean and already warm. Although I'm not used to some flavours, I really appreciated the Japanese breakfast. The place is far from Kirishima-Jingu Station, but near the bus stop to Ebino Kogen. ありがとうございました!
Cons: Everything was ok!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This "minshuku" is an older-style building and provides a different sort of experience from staying in accommodation in cities. All the other guests were Japanese, so it's important to remember to change from shoes to slippers (and vice versa) where appropriate. It's also in a small onsen (hot spring) town (Maruo Onsen), so the minshuku actually has its own small hot spring / mineral bath, which was really good. There aren't many restaurants around in the small town, so I opted for the "breakfast included" option. That was the right decision. The Japanese-style breakfast was excellent, was a little different every morning and was great value for money. The dining room downstairs was a comfortable, warm temperature, and Japanese tea / hot water was provided in a thermos / jug in my tatami room. The room itself was sufficient for my needs and the futon was very comfortable. (A softer base is provided too in case sleeping on the futon and tatami feels too hard.) The older ladies working there are extremely friendly but I don't think they speak much English. I asked if they provided an evening meal but it would have been extremely expensive. I found another cheaper, excellent local restaurant about 10 minutes' walk back towards the "town". I hired a car as any buses were infrequent and involved changes and delays. Again, that was the right decision. That enabled me to get to various hiking spots, other "onsen" (some wonderful, atmospheric places in the area) and the Open Air Art Museum, which is well worth a visit. Kirishima Jingu and its surrounding area is also worth visiting. This place was excellent value for money and a perfect base for visiting the Kirishima area. I would certainly stay there again. A really enjoyable, different experience overall.
Cons: After making my initial reservation, I didn't get any answers to some questions I had. That was probably because the people there don't appear to speak much English. I was a little concerned by that but my booking and the actual payment (in cash only) all went very smoothly. The outside door is locked at 9 pm. It seems a bit early at first but then again, you're in the countryside and if you've been out exploring the area during the day, had dinner, then an "onsen", you're probably ready for an early night anyway.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Compared to other places in Maruo Onsen, this guesthouse is so much cheaper, but it is still extremely clean and comfortable. It's a ten minute walk to the main bus stop which brings you pretty much anywhere around the area. I love how you have your own sink and toilet attached to your room.
Cons: Sometimes it felt like the staff were a bit impatient with me, but other than those few moments they were extremely warm and welcoming
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast and onsen bath. Excellent B&B to stay for day trip hiking to 韓国岳 and 高千穗峰.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Affordable and close to the bus stops to ebino kogen and kirishima hiking trails.
