Dirty carpets in hallways and our room!
The location is incredible, we booked the deluxe room with windows that open on the Piazza, direct views of the basilica and tower in the main square. Absolutely incredible! The bed was made of 2 singles put together, comfortable and a good size. Bathroom was clean and average size. Mini fridge well stocked.
So a few things could definitely be improved, starting with the breakfast options. Its your standard continental breakfast, very basic bread, croissant, ham, cheese, fruit selection. Would have been nice to offer some warm options, nothing over the top like a full American bacon eggs and pancakes, but just scrambled eggs or an omelette. not everyone wants average tasting carbs for breakfast, and don't even get me started on how terrible the espresso was, I expected better in Italy (and got it everywhere else). It would've been nice to get some help with luggage or arrival, given that the concierge and our room were in 2 separate buildings, having to carry 4 suitcases up and down multiple flights of stairs wasn't the best start to the day. Lastly this is more of an FYI rather than a negative comment, there is a huge bell tower about the hotel, so you'll know what hour of the day it is at all times, especially at 5am when you're hoping to still be asleep, having said that after 2 nights you get used to it and it just adds to the atmosphere and the view.
The beginning was good with good directions how to find a suitable boat.
When we came the guy who met us let us understand that breakfast is included in the room rate, and is served in the room. He asked us to fill in what we wanted for breakfast on a specific paper he showed us (in the room). He asked us to do that before 1.00 am and leave the paper hanging on the door on the outside. On the paper we filled in was clearly stated "ROOM SERVICE BREAKFAST IS SERVED FROM 8.00 am TO 10.30 am AND IT IS INCLUDED IN THE ROOM RATE" (with capital letters). We did as we had been told. To remember what we had ordered I took a photo of the paper, as I usually do, that is why I have the exact wording. When we checked out we were asked to pay 60 € for breakfast (we had stayed 2 mornings). We were very upset and protested. He claimed I had signed a paper ordering the breakfast. On the paper I had signed (and still have a photo of) were no prices but only the text about the breakfast being included in the room rate. I wanted to see what he claimed I had signed but he did not let me see the paper. Finally we found out that our reservation actually did not include breakfast. I was in a very bad cold when arriving and had not checked that. Because we were told breakfast was included in the rate I unfortunatly never thought I needed to check the breakfast matter. Otherwise we would have been eating breakfast somewhere else. We ended up paying 40 € for the breakfast, 60 € would have been for 3 nights and we had stayed only two, the man claimed he had believed we had stayed three nights, but then noticed we had stayed only two. Another cheating attempt? We felt very angry and frustrated about the whole situation.
The decor was very nice. The location was exceptional. It was very cozy.
The hall was very dated and the stairs which were expected were steeper than expected. Our flight landed a little late and there is no one at the Relais after 7 pm. We had to walk quite a bit to another hotel (they were very accommodating and sent a porter to accompany us, but it was quite a bit of walking for two older ladies). We expected more space and we expected that since the suite was for three, that we would have two separate rooms. That was not the case.
