Press Hotel, Autograph Collection - Portland - Building
1
9.5 Excellent (622 reviews)
₹ 18,109+
Overview Reviews
The Press Hotel, located on the corner of Exchange and Congress Streets in the Old Port District, features 110 thoughtfully appointed luxury guestrooms, including a Penthouse Suite with rooftop access and 360-degree views of the city; four private function rooms and is home to UNION, its 65-seat restaurant by Executive Chef, Joshua Berry. Each guestroom has design inspired by a 1920s writer's office including a vintage-styled journalist desk, playful newsroom references throughout and floor to ceiling marble bathrooms. An iconic front-desk "letterpress art wall" welcomes guests to its front desk and to its Inkwell lobby bar featuring hand crafted cocktails. The hotel also has an Art Gallery featuring local artists works, open to the public, which also includes a two story signature installation piece of vintage typewriters called the SWARM, to depict the chaos of a newsroom.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Terrific location that’s accessible to everything. The staff was pleasant and helpful at every opportunity. I like that the building was repurposed with a theme that was true to its roots as the former home of the Portland Press Herald newspaper. We enjoyed our meal in the Union Restaurant as well the complimentary hot chocolate on a brisk New Year’s Day.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Clean, modern, stylish, food at Union was fantastic and service at the restaurant and hotel was great!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hate the glass doors in the bathroom .Creepy.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location. One of the best stays I’ve ever experienced. Friendly and incredibly helpful staff. Beautiful rooms and artwork everywhere you look. Restaurant is a gem, worthy of trying more than once. Will be back in Portland soon, and my stay will be at the Press Hotel.
Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice front desk staff. Comfortable bed. Good air conditioner. Great location. Complimentary coffee. Enjoyable breakfast in restaurant with fresh blueberry preserves. Plenty of complimentary bottled water and comp wi-fi. Hotel shuttle from/to airport
Cons: Most of the room has flooring, but there is carpet around the bed that needs to be vacuumed on a regular schedule. There was a large hairpin on the carpet when I checked in, and it was still there when I checked out four days later. No bathtub!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Press hotel can't be beat! Located very centrally in Portland it has been beautifully renovated and the staff are amazingly friendly. The room had a wonderfully comfortable bed and a great bathroom. Added to the superlatives the on-site restaurant is one of the best in Portland, a big compliment in such a foodie city. Definitely a must-try.
Cons: The only small quibble I had was that the room had a desk chair and it would have been nice to have a comfortable chair to sit on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place and location! The breakfast was amazing. All of the food were local and home grown. I love that concept and practice.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was outstanding and is what will bring me back.
Cons: Price to high
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A wonderful place to spend a night in Portland! We had an ice storm, but Union Restaurant is fabulous, so you don't even have to go out in bad weather. Comfy bed, fun decor, lovely time.
Cons: My only issue was that I totally wiped out in our fancy shower. The floor was like greased glass. Gah. I am lucky to only have bruises. I mentioned my accident to staff, but got no real response beyond "sorry". Someone had definitely left a slick cleaning fluid in there. I was pretty shaken. And super lucky I didn't break my arm.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, beautiful rooms

Cons: Bigger bath and bigger tv
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Connie was extremely welcoming and friendly. The Inn was spotless and I am EXTREMELY picky about cleanliness. I stayed in the Daisy Room and it was very cozy, comfortable, clean, charming and bright but could darken with the shades if preferred. Connie had all off the necessities in the room plus extras which I have NEVER found in other B&B's or hotels. (I always have to go ask for extras) There were plenty of fluffy, soft towels for showering plus multiple wash clothes and hand towels. There was even toothpaste in case someone forget to bring it as well as a nightlight in the bathroom! It's location is also fantastic. It's 2 blocks from downtown so an easy walk to everything therefore eliminating the need to drive and struggle finding a parking place, The breakfast was delicious and very filling. The morning I was there I had a fruit, yogurt and granola parfait, yummy pumpkin french toast with pure Maine maple syrup and sausage. There was fresh fruit, delicious coffee and multiple choices if tea is your preference also. I highly recommend Candlebay Inn and will definitely stay there again if I'm in Freeport.
Cons: That I couldn't have stayed another night or two at this charming Inn
9.0 Excellent
Pros: A very quaint 1800's era inn, with all of the charm of days gone by. There were wine glasses and a cork screw in the room, as well as a basket with some snacks, simple things that were just a few of the nice touches. A very restful place, and we were made to feel welcome the minute we walked in the front door.
Cons: better casual seating in the room, less noisy exhaust fan in bathroom.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our beds were comfortable, breakfast was so lovely and Connie is beyond gracious. The rooms feel like Maine and it is close to everything, but on a quiet street. Both my mother and sister were traveling with me and they wished we could have stayed on and explored from here rather than moving on.
Cons: We loved everything.
7.9 Good
Pros: We received a very friendly and welcoming greeting. Room was very neat and clean Walking distance to downtown was wonderful and convenient!!
Cons: Shower/bathroom was exceptionally small.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was delicious and had a theme!!
Cons: The owner. She was very social and if I needed anything, I am sure she would have done anything possible to secure it!!

Cons: Sally at the front desk was extremely rude and condescending. Will not be recommending your hotel based on sally and unhelpful she was .
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Rooms are spacious! Pool and hot tub were great!
Cons: Beds could have been more comfortable.
7.5 Good
Pros: Bed was comfy, just lower height wise than expected and wasn’t a memory foam mattress so when I moved my partner felt me moving. The ac unit in the bedroom was noise than the unit in the living area. An overall pleasant stay.
Cons: Bed not being higher and non memory foam and the noisy ac unit in the bedroom
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast. Beautiful clean rooms. Wonderful hotel staff! Will definitively stay here again!
4.0 Okay
Cons: funky smell of the room. Not worth the $$$ Continental part of breakfast was ok, hot buffet - eggs were horrible. this was one of the reason we picked this hotel because it included breakfast, but unfortunately we had to go out and pay for breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was just wonderful
Cons: Nothing
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff, breakfast, size of room
Cons: Wish breakfast lasted til 10 everyday and wish the pool were larger and there were a variety of exercise machinesr
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Sally was the BEST at the front desk. She was so kind and helpful. I wish every place had a Sally. We loved our room. We loved the pool.
Cons: The breakfast could have been better.
7.0 Good
Pros: They have little to no healthy choices in snack bar, addition of granola bars and yogurt would be an improvement. Also they did not leave fruit out whereas other Hilton locations offer daily fruit out at night. Keep Restaurant open till 10 AM seven days a week
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The suites and the pool
Cons: Nope
4.0 Okay
Pros: location and cleanliness
Cons: the housekeeping refused to show up after requesting for a cleanup after a toilet leak and the maintenance guy had to show up after repeating requests
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was updated and very comfortable and spacious. Having the mini kitchen was very helpful. The free breakfast was decent. Convenient location to many nearby towns and a lot of shopping and food nearby.
Cons: Honestly the only negative I have is the hair dryer they have in the rooms is old and barely works. That's the only negative I can think of.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Lighthouse Suites is a beautiful, clean and provide everything for your stay!! No need to bring beach chairs or towels as they have them accessible for your in every room. This is the second time I've stayed and will absolutely do so again!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was so clean and proximity to the beach
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We could not have been more pleased with this unit. We had a one bedroom with full kitchen and living room. The space was more than adequate for the two of us. The unit had all new cooking appliances and washer/dryer. The bed was adequate, but not all beds are as comfortable as your own. A king size bed would have been a great offering in this unit. The view and the closeness to the ocean was perfect. A short stroll thru the dunes and we were on the beach. Being September, it felt as if the beach belonged to us. Perfect
Cons: The only thing that both my husband and I did not like was the stroll thru the dunes to get to the beach. Most days we walked barefoot and the deteriorating mat hurt our feet, but it was easier to walk on that than the soft and deep sand that was a bit of a struggle for us to keep our balance. this was such a minor struggle that I even hate to mention it. The younger generation will have no issues with this.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great rooms, great water view, super clean
Cons: Only two treadmills and one elliptical, and elevation function on neither treadmill worked. A small thing, but kinda important to a workout.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: front desk was Wonderful!!
Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: I was placed in a handicap accessible room with an unusual walk-in shower configuration; the drain was in the center of the bathroom. I had to sop up water with bath towels as water was around the toilet and in center of bathroom, causing a trip hazard.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: Was in Portland for one night and wanted to stay in Old Port to enjoy the sights, sounds and seafood! The hotel is welcoming and beautiful. The rooms are very nice and the staff was great. The location was very convenient to some of my favorite places in the area including Gilbert's Chowder House, LeRoux (retail) and of course, the waterfront. View from my harbor view room was outstanding.
Cons: My only complaint was that for the steep room rate, breakfast was extra. I booked through American Express travel and am a Platinum card member. Seems like a cup of coffee and a bagel isn't a whole lot to ask for when I've spent $450 for the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The comfort and breakfast
Cons: Everyone made us feel comfortable The food was amazing
6.0 Good
Cons: Paying for an ocean view but looking at a parking garage. Front desk staff was terrible.
5.0 Okay
Pros: good location
Cons: house keeping didn't do good job
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, staff, and food choices.
Cons: Our room had a terribly designed shower. It was a handicapped room and the entire bathroom filled with water when the shower ran. The drain in the room was not designed properly to accept the water runoff. We needed 10-12 extra towels a day to prevent the water from exiting the bathroom and reaching our hotel Room.
7.0 Good
Pros: within walking distance to many interests
Cons: $25 additional for parking above the room rental
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hotel in a central location with friendly staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome place!
Cons: Bar open alittle earlier than 5:00 would be the only thing i would have liked. Otherwise, this place is PERFECT!

9.2 Excellent

Pros: The room was wonderful and the beds were very comfortable. Every convenience was available to make us comfortable from an upstairs sitting room with home-cooked snacks to a fantastic breakfast. It was very close to all the places we wished to visit and the host was very helpful and friendly. 5.8 Okay
Pros: Location and setting good. Restsurant average.
Cons: Nice location...property was needing updating..to be a truley nice destination.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location, location, location. Next to historic Cliff Walk and beach in a nice neighborhood. Like a large 1910 beach mansion. Nice staff.
Cons: Rather absurd elevator you had to get a staff member to operate. Overpriced. Somehow a room for $450 or so ends up costing over $1,100 for two nights. That ain’t “tax” alone. I think even $400 plus tax might be a little high for our pleasant but hardly lavish room. We stayed at the great Williamsburg Inn on this trip for $450 plus tax, and the room and the whole hotel were incomparably more luxurious than this one, with infinitely better facilities in an equally great location. Sure, luxury beach house is more casual, but less is usually charged for more casual, too.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: All Fabulous, staff very accommodating
Cons: there was a wifi dead zone in our room, wouldn't have been a problem so much but also no cell service either, just minor thing, maybe a new router would be good.
6.7 Good
Pros: fantastic location lovely outdoor dining
Cons: Noisy room
8.3 Excellent
Pros: A friendly, helpful staff with great attitudes. The location and views also cannot be beat!
Cons: Some of the furniture was a little worn and tired, and breakfast did not start until 8:00 a.m.

Pros: Restaurant is great and the location is exceptional

Cons: I thought it was a little pricey for the room size. We had two rooms and they were not really equitable, I didn't think. Also, the cost of parking was a little steep for me.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great room, bed was very comfortable too. Staff was friendly and helpful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. It was easy to walk to everything in the city. The hotel was staff was very friendly and wanted to do anything they could to assist us. The hotel was in great condition and the room exceeded my expectations.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beds are very comfortable.
Cons: The construction in the lobby but we understand and look forward to seeing it when it’s complete.
4.0 Okay
Pros: Pro's : Location. Right in the middle of the Old Port. Complimentary room service coffee in a.m. Staff was friendly.
Cons: King suite was TINY for the amount of money it cost. Small, dated tv. Walls paper thin. Would not stay here again.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is in a great location downtown just minutes from all the shops and restaurants. It is an historic building which adds personality and charm. The room was very comfortable and quiet. The staff were very friendly and helpful..
Cons: There was construction work going on which made the surroundings a bit shabby.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location near downtown and the wharf

Pros: The decor and the friendly staff
Cons: No hot water in the morning
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location in the middle of everything, but maintains a quiet atmosphere. Loved the fireplace inside the hotel bar, read a book and had an afternoon drink. Then enjoyed the fireplace outside playing cards and cocktails. Loved it!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is primo!
Cons: Older crowd and a wedding party.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location of hotel and service was excellent.
Cons: Air/water vent in room noisy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect for us jumping around town. We loved being all the way at the end of the hall and our suite was very quiet. The view from the room was great, especially with the ice on the trees!
Cons: The slippers could have been closed toed and the TV bigger, but at this point it's just nitpicking, this place was awesome.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was great- the valet attendants were very professional (and the parking was actually cheaper than the city parking garages) and the front desk staff were very helpful. They even had a complimentary car service! You also can't beat the location of the hotel- a minute walk and you're surrounded by beautiful shops and restaurants!
Cons: Our room was near the elevator and the pantry- due to the proximity of those two things, it was pretty loud throughout the night. There was a sign next to the pantry encouraging people to be quiet but I'm not sure that advice was taken. While the wooden floors were beautiful, I don't think they did a lot to muffle noise when people walked to their rooms in the middle of the night.

Pros: Breakfast was really good. Servers were excellent. The bed was extremely comfortable and everything was clean. The return courtesy driver was wonderful and offered me the use of a step stool.
Cons: I left my car there and stayed overnight when I came back. On the way to the airport, the courtesy van driver did not offer me a step stool to help me get in and out of the vehicle. I didn't know it was available and hurt myself getting in and out. I am 72, fairly short, and disabled. Not a good way to start a trip.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was very spacious and the staff accommodating. Great location close to the airport, but also close to local shopping and restaurants.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The nightly reception was wonderful!
Cons: We had a small snowstorm during our stay. While the parking lot was plowed the walkways were not. This made it very difficult to get to your vehicles and maneuver an already difficult situation.
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: The housekeeping staff was unbelievably friendly!
Cons: Poor service, front desk and servers in restaurant. Pool heat not working (why not disclosed at check in?!) Many common areas in the hotel are cold. Snacks in sundry shop not well stocked. Rooms are small. Heaters are too noisy for anyone who cant sleep through a bomb. Reception/dinner confusing at best.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was outstanding: friendly and helpful. The Happy hour snacks were plentiful and drinks flowed freely. The breakfast omelet/egg chef was awesome.
Cons: "Didn't like" is rather harsh. Instead I would position this comment as not quite as expected... This is not a classic Embassy Suites with the center atrium but converted from another chain. It was OK, but also in some ways a "force fit". -- The layout of the Lobby/Restaurant area for breakfast did not "flow" smoothly. There was a station for eggs cooked to order that was small and crowded. The pastries were off in a nook that was a tad dark, the rest of the breakfast was laid out with hot stations (keep well stocked and hot). It FELT like there were fewer options (example: had French toast, no pancakes), but that is likely because it is a smaller site and the overhead of every combination is just not reasonable. It didn't hurt the offerings: there was PLENTY available. And everything was GOOD. It worked, but just disorienting, not the usual well laid out Embassy Suites. -- The room/suite was a different layout: you enter into a small but perfectly acceptable sitting area with little fridge, microwave, sink, couch, desk area, swivel chair (that I though was gonna flip over when my husband leaned back), and TV. Then you go into the bathroom (sort of - it was a big sink and mirror) that leads you into the bedroom. We actually had to hunt for the toilet and shower -- it was the door we THOUGHT was the closet. Just WEIRD. It worked, but not intuitive. -- (This item IS a "didn't like/needs to be improved") The lobby area was FREEZING. There was no meaningful buffer to block cold air when the door would open - which it did often (understandable, its the entryway…). A partial-wall provided a visual barrier but the cold air just blew in, up and over the wall. The entire sitting area was cold, even by the fireplace. Yes, it's January BUT it was also the gathering area for cocktail hour and breakfast. It needs to be comfortable -- and it was not. -- Parking lot: MANY spots not plowed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: No
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel was amazing! The happy hour and breakfast were exceptional and the staff was very generous and warm. The location was close enough to Downtown Portland, yet far enough away that we weren't stuck anywhere. Cheryl, a spunky blonde, who worked Happy Hour and breakfast was the sweetest! She sat with myself and my group of friends and shared the best places to get food and things to do around town. Joanne was the bartender at Happy Hour and that woman is a hard worker! The bar was mobbed during Happy Hour and she kept up with a smile on her face.
Cons: We stayed on the 3rd floor in a Premium Suite. Just outside of our room was a "Staff Only" closet that consistently smelled like marijuana. We wouldn't mind the smell if it was brief (i.e., someone was outside and the smell was residual on their clothes), but we paid for a non-smoking suite and the smell lingered into our room.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic breakfast, friendly staff, and nice rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was clean and the breakfast Buffett was a nice little extra.
6.0 Good
Pros: Its convenient for my kids with having the pool and restaurant. Great location close to mall and stores
Cons: The last couple times I stayed at embassy my bathroom was seriously disgusting like I didn't even want to shower cuz there was hair and soap scum in the shower and mind u this was my second stay in the last 3 months besides that the room was great
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The open bar from 5:30-7:30
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Proximity to airport, free parking, free breakfast, daily reception.

Pros: Well maintained, just what we needed to 2 nights
Cons: The website seemed to give the idea the location of the hotel was close to the harbor. Actually it's 1.5 miles to get to the harbor. Otherwise the hotel was fine for what we needed.

Pros: Was a vary nice room and loved the king bed. The breakfast was ok, but the people working there were very nice.
Cons: Really nice, liked all

9.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the room very much. Also, the location is great.
Cons: In general fine, but the bread at the breakfast could have been more fresh.
3.0 Mediocre
Cons: Room was in poor condition, and pricing did not reflect the quality of the offering.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and helpful. The Inn itself was quaint and charming. Location was a plus.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel was very different from most, and was a delight. It likely is not for everyone, but provides all one could ask for or need. Personnel was always helpful and courteous.

Pros: Charming and fun. Great staff.

Pros: Old world feel but up to date amenities. Large room. Didn't feel like a "hotel". Loved it.
Cons: A little away from the harbor and restaurants. Walk, cab,Uber solves that issue.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: The friendly and helpful staff, and the ambience. And the price.
Cons: I agree with a previous reviewer that the bed was not as comfortable as it could be - a little stiff with hard pillows.

Pros: Rooms are spacious! Pool and hot tub were great!
Cons: Beds could have been more comfortable.
7.5 Good
Pros: Bed was comfy, just lower height wise than expected and wasn’t a memory foam mattress so when I moved my partner felt me moving. The ac unit in the bedroom was noise than the unit in the living area. An overall pleasant stay.
Cons: Bed not being higher and non memory foam and the noisy ac unit in the bedroom

Cons: Terrible bed. Left side of bed was sunken in. The bed squeaked so much that it woke us up all night. Bed needs to be replaced. Check in was 4:00 for two rooms. Room want ready so everyone had to get ready for a function in one room. When we left at 4:30 the room still wasn’t ready.

Pros: Really liked the woman at the front desk. She was super nice, provided great dining places. She also recommended the sister B&B, as well. Just so pleasant to to have a conversation with, in general.
Cons: We didn’t like the sounds above us. It was old structure, well kept but the floors above were all hard woods. It was noisy during the day so a nap as o day was quite impossible. Luckily they have a no noise policy at night so sleeping at night was great. We had our vacation on one of the last weekends of the season and breakfast offerings were pretty whittled down.

Pros: The room was beautiful, excellent location just a short walk from the beach. The gentleman at the front desk was very accommodating.
Cons: They turned us away from getting breakfast at the restaurant on the main floor because they were short-staffed and couldn't handle any more patrons at that time, that was bizarre.
