10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, beautiful lake & garden. Great staff, full of knowledge about the area and extremely helpful Beautiful rooms and onsens.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The meals (both dinner and breakfast) were exceptional. I often tend to pass a general judgement on a place based on the quality of their breakfasts. Bear in mind, this is a traditional Japanese setting, and the breakfast was, of course, Japanese. It was not only creative (I had at least 10 different dishes), it was also painstakingly prepared by an excellent chef. Since I had also enjoyed their (equally spectacular) dinner the night before, I expected nothing less. And yet it still exceeded expectations.
Cons: The place was perfect for me. I wanted a bit of traditional Japan, and this is exactly what was served up. Obviously, having an English-speaking host made things easier. There was nothing I didn't like about this Ryokan
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast and dinner set was fabulous.
Cons: the futons were not put away and the room was not tidied during the day.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was my second stay. It was excellent. Food (both dinner and breakfast) was brilliant. The private onsen was a treat. Highly recommend staying here if you want to get a little bit off the beaten track. I would happily stay here again if my travels ever take me back past this area.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This is a traditional Ryokan, with an Onsen as a bonus. They stay and the evening meal and breakfast were a real Japanese experience.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Tyler and Mari were warm and welcoming, as were all other staff we saw throughout our quick stay. You can feel the personal investment in the inn’s history and future, which is a delight to see. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious! I’m looking forward to returning in the spring with my bike and a bit more time to enjoy the area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, traditional family room with english speaking hosts who couldn't do enough for us. The free pickups from the Togura station are a must and we even got a quick sight-seeing tour on the way. Enjoy wearing the traditional attire provided! We were a family of 5 with 3 teenagers. There are also both indoor and outdoor onsens for male and female.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: We loved our room, it was a traditional tatami room with a great robotic toilet and sink. The indoor onsens was a little hot, but the outdoor ones were perfect! The meal was really a great spread--however the amount was overwhelming. We thought the kaiseki food was really delicious, but after about 10 dishes, they brought our steak which was a bit fatty. Unfortunately we left food because it was just so much (and we're from Texas!). We partook in the geisha experience, which was great fun. We were told the price would decrease based on how many people participated--but apparently it was counting only the adults, so the calculation changed at the end from what I was expecting. We were driven back to the station which was great, and we had transportation from the station as well. The orientation to the area by Tyler was great too.
Cons: We didn't feel comfortable when being guilted about our meal. After being asked several times about removing the dishes despite food remaining, it just was awkward--but then the owner (the American) came to us to pull out our futons, but also I think to see why we left food. We said everything was absolutely delicious, but we just simply cannot eat that amount of food--and he commented that the chef doesn't really do the tempura type meals insinuating that we would have eaten it if it had been 'elementary' Japanese food. At the end, we offered to leave an umbrella that we no longer needed for other guests who find themselves in the rain, and he made an awkward comment about taking umbrellas become like unwanted rabbits multiplying--again, just another awkward conversation that took away from the traditional experience.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome experience at the hotel. All the staffs were super helpful, polite and excellent services all the time with us. The experience of breakfast and dinner in your own saloon was awesome so authentic. I really feel I was eating like real Japanese and not just ramen, udon noodles or sushi. The hot spring are so relaxing and really warm, so good for your skin. The pools are divided by ladies and gentlemen. The staff doesn't know to much English but with Google translator and being polite it was enough to enjoy an awesome experience as a Japanese.
