Top tips for hiring a car at London Gatwick Airport

  • Car hire at Gatwick Airport (LGW) is a convenient way to connect to the metropolitan London boroughs and surrounding areas. At just 28 miles from central London, Gatwick Airport is located south of the capital and links directly to the M23 motorway at Junction 9 and to the A23, which is the London-Brighton Road, which can give you opportunities to explore the South Downs National Park and the southern coastal regions of the East Sussex County. The M25 London circular motorway is also just a 10min drive, which will connect you easily to all of London’s regions and to the UK’s major national motorway networks.
  • It may be worth noting that busy times at Gatwick Airport tend to fall between 07:00-10:00 in the morning and 17:00-20:00 in the evening, which coincide with London’s major road networks. Therefore, if you’re returning your car hire at Gatwick Airport between these hours, make sure to give yourself extra time to account for delays or try to avoid these hours if at all possible.
  • If you prefer to take a quieter route to central London with your car hire at Gatwick Airport, you can turn left directly from the airport, which will take you straight onto the A217 and will bring you into the capital on less busy local roads. Alternatively, turning right will bring you straight onto the M23 motorway, which leads to London’s M25 ring-road for a faster but busier route.
  • Bear in mind that central London has a congestion charge zone in operation between 07:00-22:00 daily so make sure to be aware of the signage in place when you enter the zones after passing through the Dartford Crossing. Avis car hire at Gatwick Airport will navigate this payment on your behalf, which will be settled later with your rental account. Be aware also, that most companies include an airport surcharge with your rental, which will be included with your overall bill.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire at London Gatwick Airport for ₹ 4,999 or less
  • Book your car hire at London Gatwick Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

The car was not fully charged on pick up and we had to stop to charge and as a result a2.5 hour journey took us 5.5hours. My heavily pregnant wife was very stressed. There were no charger points available nor working when we stopped to charge. We then made it with 8miles left on the battery to the next charging station. We picked up my daughter 2hours late and that created further problems for the family looking after my daughter. They missed their connection to Ireland. The 155miles return journey to Gatwick we only just made again with less than 20miles left on the battery. We were assured the car would travel 255miles on a full charge. But it didnt ! All in all we had an awful experience and a very stressful journey, concerned all the way for my heavily pregnant wife. The girl at budget/Avis desk was Polish and her english language was very poor. I do need a car again Monday 4th for 1day hire again from Gatwick to take my daughter back to school and will use your search engine, but would be extremely concerned if we ended up with a hire from Budget again.

Most of the experience was excellent but felt like the original pick up experience was too pushy in trying to upsell us to spend money on things we didn't need. They know we've just landed from a long flight and are experiencing jet lag and it feels like they are trying to take advantage of you in that moment. Maybe that's just they're job but that part wasn't pleasant.

Greenmotion failed to provide me with an hire car because they did not accept the accident and collision coverage provided by my Visa credit card. My credit card has always covered this insurance for more than 30 years of hiring cars provided I don't take out the hire car insurance. Two other people were not able to successfully hire a car from Greenmotion for other reasons, I think, also while I was there trying to solve the problem with them.

Our experience with hertz was excellent. We landed in Gatwick and walked to Hertz from the airport which was not very far. The car was ready and we had an upgrade to an automatic and I think the car was a bit bigger too. So all in all we are very happy with our experience. The car was very economical it was a Toyota four door CR hybrid. Thank you kayak for organising this, can’t fault anything. Drop-off was very smooth, we arrived half an hour before we had to drop it off someone was there immediately to assess it and we were told there was zero problems so no extra charges. Wonderful service all in all.

The vehicle was good, but spoilt by not having an owners manual, so it was difficult whilst driving to understand some of the controls and what the car was doing by itself. I had to go onto the internet to find out what the buttons on the steering wheel did. Finally on returning the vehicle, I told them that a stone had hit the windscreen and it had a crack. When told that the 'costly' collision damage waiver did not cover the cost of repair, I was dismayed, I was told I should be able to claim on my travel insurance. Subsequently, Hertz have included a bill for 808 pounds for the repair of the windscreen. I shall challenge that as I got a quote of 148 pounds for the same repair. I have told my bank to hold over that payment, whilst the matter is resolve with my travel insurance. None of the paperwork I received from the people at the yard, gave me any indication of the exclusion of damage to a windscreen would not be covered by collision damage waiver.

Now they are saying the car never been damaged and I have to be charged for the old damages as according to their system the car never been damaged and the vehicle year is 2021! I disputed it and sent my proves but it is very poor management and it is stress and anxiety no needs for me to go through I put down a cheaper options to be with reputable company but National/Enterprise prove me wrong.

The in person workers were pleasant enough but the car was terrible. We were told we’d have a 5 person 4 suitcase car. When we put our suitcases in the car we barely fit 3 people. The windshield wipers did not work and we had many days of scary rain. We had to hold them down while driving and it wasn’t safe. The stick shift didn’t work properly and the car pulled badly to the left. We tried many times to call customer service to exchange the car or return it to a different location because we were too scared to drive it. We were never able to get a hold of someone that could help us. One time we spoke to a person and she supposedly gave us an inside line but no one ever answered the line. We had locals try to help us, the two hotels tried but to no avail. We left the car parked at a hotel for 6 days without driving it because we couldn’t get back to where we rented it and we were too scared to drive it. The whole thing was awful and traumatizing. When we returned it we let them know about the difficulties but they didn’t seem to care. I won’t rent from them again. I hope they look it over before renting it out again but I doubt they will as they are so busy.
