I was charged extra fees in addition to what I had paid and was expected to be charged and I have no understanding what those charges are for and don’t believe I should be billed what I have been billed so now I’m going to have to go back and fight those charges, which is extra time and energy and frustration that I did not expect. I wasn’t able to rent! They call me and send a message that they don’t have a car for me . It was stressful considering that happened just on the night before. I needed the car in the mid morning to travel from Chicago to Detroit because I had an appointment that day. We rented from chicago airport agreeing to return at Milwaukee. I explicitly asked the staff to confirm the return location at Milwaukee will be open at 4-5pm. Then I was surprised, the location was closed and no instructions for overnight return, no one answering calls at Hertz. I ended up returning at the next closest location which is the Milwaukee airport. Then I get a surprise bill of $450 instead of the negotiated rate of $160 on July 6. I am working to charge back that transaction with the credit card company. Hertz doesn't answer customer service calls anyway.Reviewed 26 Jul 2025

They added hidden fees and charged me for gas even though I had returned the tank with more than I left it with. You expect to pay a premium with Hertz so that you don’t have to deal with chasing their customer service. It is truly useless to have a smooth pickup process if it means that you’ll have to track them down later because they charged you the price you paid ahead of time over in fees. We reserved a car at the airport after our flight home was canceled and we chose to drive instead of wait 2 days for the next available flight. Hertz refused to honor the reservation because it wasn’t made at least 24 hours in advance. Thankfully Alamo was more understanding of the situation and rented us a car so we could drive home.Reviewed 8 Aug 2024
