Winter in Fairbanks Alaska on summer tires!
Pros: Convenience in the airport.
Cons: The rate changed and was more expensive. That wasn't the worst part. They had summer tires on a car in Fairbanks, Alaska during the winter. It had no traction or grip on the slick roads. When I checked the car back in the woman at the counter didn't seem to understand that it was a problem. I grew up and live in a cold climate so I know how to drive on slick roads. With all of the tourists coming in, it is a safety issue and is irresponsible on Avis' part.

Cons: Avis refused to accept the credit card that I used to make my reservation because, despite being linked to both my debit and credit lines, they wouldn't accept a card that said debit on it. This was never mentioned previously. They also refused a check and cash, which was unfortunate because I was in Alaska in winter and needed a specific kind of vehicle. Instead, I was left stranded at the airport at 3 AM. Thankful that Hertz came to my rescue.

Misleading info prior to rental
Pros: Rented several weeks before my trip. Web site said no debit cards. I do not own a major credit card, only my Visa debit. The representative told me as long as it said Visa on the card I could use it. When trying to pick up the car it was not allowed and left me stranded alone in a place where I knew no one and had no place to stay since I was staying 100 miles from the airport.

Straight forward transaction!
Pros: Quick and to the point, no haggling over extra insurance,etc...
Cons: Could have started up vehicle, so as to have been warmed up, but we do live in Alaska
Pros: They gave us a Toyota Camry with less than 1k miles. Location was at the Fairbanks Airport and that made it convenient for pickup and drop off. The agent was courteous as well helpful as she directed us to a good restaurant. I would rent from them again.

Cons: They told me the right side had "some kind of damage" prior to renting the car. I didn't see anything. On the last day, the rear right tire exploded on the highway. I changed the tire and got on my flight at 6 AM. The kiosk was closed so I left her keys in the drop. I then received a call from them that was very belittling. They told me that I should expect that they could just rent the car out with a spare tire on it and that I will have to pay. I assumed as much, but the tone was offensive. Then they charged me $50 for"smoking"
I was at a cabin where we had a camp fire. There was "ash and smoke smell" in the car. The whole experience made me angry. The insurance called about the spare tire. I'm sure I'll pay $300 for it.
Long story short... These guys are terrible.

Pros: The Nissan Rogue was a brand new SUV and nothing bad about that
Cons: When I was sent the offer to upgrade I that I was going to get the SUV that they offered in the price. A Subaru Outback. Not a Nissan Rogue. I paid about $80.00 more to get the Outback and I get a small SUV instead.

Cons: had a printout confirming my reservation which was conveniently lost - they couldn't find me anywhere so a new reservation was going to cost me THREE times the original amount. Ended up with a Yaris which had manual mirrors, no cruise, no overhead light for TWICE the original price. Final bill was totally wrong - charged me $300 for four days of an upgrade, etc.

Cons: Set reservation for the 6 wks in AK, but when arrived would only give contract for one month. Had to return to airport and renew contract- inconvenient. Would not reimburse for the tire I had to fix in order to return car. Kept copy incase the rim was damaged. Will not rent from Dollar in Fairbanks again if there is another option available. Poor service for AK!

Pros: Shelly at the Dollar desk was wonderful. So personable and friendly. Car did great with studded snow tires. Comfy and great heater for a cold Fairbanks day.
Pros: They didn't push for the extras, but he didn't even ask if I wanted it.
Cons: Customer service was rude every time. Car had a lot of dents and damages to it. You would think a rental agency would repair the cars they lend out.

Free upgrade and no hassle about added insurance!
Pros: We came in early in the morning and the service agent was friendly and upgraded us to a bigger car with no extra charge. Plus, he did not make us feel guilty for not taking the extra insurance coverage.

Pros: The van was as expected, clean, and performed well.
Cons: The crummy attitide of the staff. I showed up a couple hours after my scheduled pick up time and he lectured me on how bad that was and how I forfeited my reservation after one hour but he would do me a big favor and find me another van. I've rented dozens (hundreds?) of vehicles and never had anyone berate me like that and, the worst part, he never bothered to ask why I was delayed. Then he wanted me to initial the damages without looking at the van and was mad that I was going to walk out to the lot and then come back which he said was a waste of our time. Glad I did, as I found an additional scratch and the tow hitch bent. When I came back in he said only scratches larger than a golfball, to which I replied it was larger than a half-dollar and he just shrugged and said nothing more about the scratch or the bent hitch. I would not rent from Budget in Anchorage again.

Pros: Car was clean, easy to drive and pick up and drop off was quick.
Cons: Charged $30 USD extra for not having a credit card in my name.
Pros: Easy pickup and a great rate through Kayak. Car was clean and met my needs.
Cons: The vehicle was not equipped with winter tires and they are needed for driving in Alaska in December. The summer tires that are probably stock for the vehicle were not adequate and should be switched for the winter. Had I not been from Alaska and warned about the summer tires from previous renters, I could see an issue for someone not used to winter driving conditions. I recommend the extra coverage if you rent in the winter but are not used to winter driving conditions.

Great experience except the shuttle
Pros: Overall a great experience. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a brand new car (16 miles on it!), with block heater, heated seats, and auto start. Customer service there was very helpful, didn't try to push into paying for upgrades which I really appreciated.
Cons: Only issue we encountered is that they shuttle is a standard mini-van. I was traveling alone with an infant and car seat, which meant I had to take her out of the carrier, strap in the car seat, put her in the car seat, then take everything back out when we got to the agency. My one suggestion would be to upgrade from the minivan to a regular shuttle. Other than that, great overall experience!

The counter closes at midnight!
Pros: Arrived late to find the counter closed. There was a 4 people who had paid for the rental through a third party and had no way to pick up the car. The employees at the other car rental agency's informed us this happens every night. Had to rent a car from another company. I am letting my place of employment work out the issue with paying for a car that was not available for pick up. They knew the plane was late the counter is located in a small airport with two baggage claims. The ticket counter is located by the baggage claim. Someone could have waited the 15 extra minutes to help costumers who had pre paid for a car.

Pros: Airport location is easy to use. The Honda Tucson was just right for our day trips. Easy return. Good value.
Pros: Alamo always seems to be flexible if I need to modify my reservation. That's imperative as my schedule constantly changes.

Pros: Car was ok, staff I dropped it off to was fine.
Cons: I felt the pickup was terrible- as soon as I approached the counter, I felt like the associate treated me with disdain. She tried to convince me to upgrade to a truck or SUV repeatedly instead of the economy car I had requested. She asked "Where will you be parking the car this evening?", and when I told her that I would be staying with my sister, she asked what part of town that was.
I noticed some scratches on the car, and noted that the paperwork didn't have any listed. I took pictures of the scratches and when tried to show her how big they were, she kept asking "Where was the scratch? Was it bigger than a dollar?", and refused to look at the pictures (which I felt were quite good, and demonstrated the size, shape and location of each scratch).
I realize that some of the scratches may not have been "as big as a dollar" but I feel that metric is really poorly designed. Bigger than a dollar how? In area? Length? Width? Many were longer than a dollar, and a large scuff present on the trunk lid was bigger in area. Anyway, it wasn't a huge waste of time, but she obviously wanted me out the door as soon as possible. I just didn't want to be blamed for damage I didn't cause.

Disappointed Alamo couldn't downgrade this to a car
Cons: I won't use pre-pay Alamo again since I couldn't downgrade to a cheaper car (I no longer needed a pickup). It's ridiculous that I ended having to pay for something I didn't need just because I prepaid.

Pros: I like the fact that the car was clean in mint condition. Most of all the sales staff was genuinely nice giving excellent customer service. I don't know how to improve on that.
The only thing I disliked was I chose not to fill the tank because I was not the person or organization paying for the rental transportation. Yet upon returning the rental to the airport I was charged and saddled with unexpected cost that I want reimbursed. I had a flight to make so I could not take any time to remedy this mistake. Any help is greatly appreciated.
