Top tips for hiring a car at Fairbanks airport

  • Booking a car rental at Fairbanks Airport (FAI), also known as Fairbanks International Airport, make sense for a number of reasons. Driving a Fairbanks Airport car rental instead of taking public transportation can save you as much as an hour as you travel through Fairbanks. Also, driving a Fairbanks Airport car rental can conveniently get you to towns just outside of Fairbanks, including Moose Creek, Badger, North Pole, Two Rivers, Pleasant Valley, Ester, and many others. Securing a car rental at Fairbanks Airport is the most sensible way for you to see the interior of Alaska according to your own schedule and agenda.
  • If you opt to book a car rental at Fairbanks Airport, you will need a valid US-issued driver’s license and a major credit card in your name. Some agencies also accept debit cards. Some agencies might also require that you show your own proof of insurance coverage if you decide not to get the insurance agency’s coverage on the rental vehicle. When you make your reservation, confirm with the customer service representative what that agency’s specific requirements are concerning a debit card and insurance coverage.
  • If you need to wait in order to collect your rental vehicle, the Fairbanks Airport offers amenities and services that will allow you to pleasantly and constructively utilize your time waiting. The Airport is open 24 hours and offers a restaurant, a coffee shop, vending machines, an information desk, massage chairs, and more. The Fairbanks Airport is small enough that you will be able to conveniently avail yourself of all it has to offer.
  • The car rental agencies at Fairbanks Airport tend to have extended hours, which is a convenient perk, especially when you are landing in a dark and cold city that you may be unfamiliar with. Most car rental agencies at Fairbanks Airport close between 1 am and 2 am. If your plane arrives at night, or even if it is delayed, chances are that your car rental agency at Fairbanks Airport will be open to help you get on your way in your Fairbanks Airport car rental.
  • Book your car hire at Fairbanks airport at least 2 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

We pick up the car 1 hour early and I ask the guy at the counter is it ok if we take it now. He said yes, and then charged me an extra full day with telling me it would cost another full days rate to take it early. So be careful when doing business with Avis in Fairbanks! They are not very honest so use caution and pay attention to the fine prints.

Said they Didn’t have a truck for me when I got to the counter even though I had booked it a week before. made other arrangements went back to cancel my booking and the girl who told me there was no trucks was holding 3 sets of truck keys as told to her by the other agent next to her and then she tried to lie about it to me. Worst experience ever. Fairbanks agent is a liar and tried to get her other agents to lie with her.

Pick up and return was weird. Was not made aware the pick up would be at a lodge we had to take a shuttle to until day of pick up. The person at the lodge didn’t tell me where to go to wait for shuttle or where to pick up car. Customer service agent Makayla was rude. Customer service agent Jasmine was excellent. No map was given for areas out of bounds for “non gravel” vehicles until I asked for one. The car itself was great, and the price was okay.
