The car was quite clean, but the fragrances of the cleansers they used were headache-inducing. I drove with the windows cracked and circulated fresh air for the first day. By Day 2 it was fine. Surely they could leave windows open after cleaning to let those odors air out?

The car was a little dirty in the outside— streaks on the glass made it hard to see out with the sun/glare. Returning the car the day of the snowstorm really slowed us down and we might have missed our flight. I would suggest speeding that part up if possible (more frequent shuttles etc).

Don't book with United Airlines. I never got to Cleveland because United Airlines failed to plan for the weather. A 5-Day Forecast of the weather is 90% accurate. There is nothing we can do to CHANGE the weather, but there is plenty we can do to PLAN for it. Yet, when bad weather is approaching, airlines take no preparatory action whatsoever. They KNOW, perhaps a week in advance, pretty much exactly when, where, and how their schedules will be disrupted, yet, instead of doing things like preemptively moving more aircraft, pilots, and other personnel into the places where they will be needed, they allow a handful of flight delays to cascade into hundreds of thousands of missed connections. Then, those who COULD HAVE done something to minimize such ripple effects leave their frontline workers out in the rain--forcing them to LIE to passenger after passenger, claiming that the airline is helpless against the forces of nature. In the end, it may take them DAYS to recover from such an event, but--in their calculus--playing catch-up is less costly than planning ahead. And, what about the passengers? Well, we're not that important to them. They figure that market scarcity and lack of competition is on their side, and that--past injuries and consumer grudges aside--we will be forced back into using their services. The LAST time I found myself in the crosshairs of this cynical approach to doing business, United Airlines was the provider. My father was scheduled to have a surgery which had a 50% survival rating, and I was flying to Wichita to be with him, and with my mother. My flight from Hayden to Denver was fine, but--when I got to Denver--there were no connecting flights to be found. And, why? Well, because, 800 miles away, in Dallas, it was snowing. Now, weeks ahead of my flight, United knew, within 50% accuracy, that this was likely. But FIVE DAYS before my flight, they knew, with 90% certainty that winter weather in Dallas was going to cause hundreds of thousands of passengers to be displaced. And THREE days ahead of my flight, their foreknowledge of the problem was at least 95% certain. So, what did they do to prepare for this? Nothing. Instead, I stood in a customer service line fully twice the length of the whole terminal, and watched, as United marched the dignity and self-respect of dozens of their own employees to their deaths, as they dutifully both denied United's culpability, and vouched for the company's sincerest apologies. And, by the time I got to the front of the line, I was more heartsick for THEM than sorry for myself. So, I accepted the meal vouchers for restaurants which were closed for the night, a travel voucher for a taxi driver who grudgingly accepted me as a passenger, and a lodging voucher for an adequate hotel in a sketchy neighborhood. The next day, they got me on a flight to Wichita JUST in time for my fathers surgery, and I was so overwhelmed by emotion and exhaustion that I actually found myself grateful enough that--whenever I told the tale--I only joked that, in the time it took United to get me from Denver to Wichita, I could have driven there and back, twice, on a Vespa--and gave little voice to the frustration and anger I felt over the fact that United put me, and 100,000 other passengers, through 24 hours of hell, for no reason. They KNEW, well in advance, exactly what was going to happen, and they could easily have taken steps to get us all safely to our destinations, with--at most--a few hours delay. Yet, instead, they did nothing, blamed it on the weather, and allowed their frontline employees to take the fall. THIS time, however, I am not feeling quite so generous. You see, a few days ago, Emily's and my nephew, Seth, died suddenly and unexpectedly. We learned late Wednesday night that there would be a funeral for him this morning, Friday, at 10 AM, in Wadsworth, Ohio. So, we hurriedly got online and booked a flight to Cleveland. Our itinerary took us out of HDN at 3:30 PM, to a connecting flight out of DEN at 5:20 PM. However, due to rain somewhere else, thousands of miles away, our flight out of HDN was delayed by two hours. The cascading effect of this delay was that--at best--United could have gotten us to Cleveland sometime this afternoon, five or six hours AFTER the memorial service. In the meantime, we would have spent the night at the Denver airport, without our luggage, and so would have arrived in Cleveland dirty, tired, and hungry. We would have had to go to the hotel (if we had been able to reschedule the rental car and room) and clean up before then driving to meet family, who could have TOLD US ABOUT the viewing and the services. We WOULD have gotten to spend a few hours with other exhausted family members (all of whose flights were ALSO delayed, but who were lucky enough to be able to reschedule their connections) before returning to the hotel to catch minutes of sleep, before getting up to catch the redeye back from Cleveland to Hayden. But, we decided that those 200 minutes were too expensive, at the $10 apiece they would cost us. So--after, once again, watching all the color drain out of the eyes of the airline's most dedicated personnel, as they scrambled to ATTEMPT to compensate for what their logistics people SHOULD have done DAYS ago--we cancelled all plans to attend the services, and went home. This is not the end of the world for us, but it IS the end of domestic airflight for us. In three weeks, we are flying to New Orleans, to spend a week with Emily's family. And, if EVERYTHING goes perfectly--if all the flights are on time, if the staff is delightful, if the cabin is cool and comfortable--that will still not be enough to make up for this loss. Not even close. Nothing short of a full-throated public admission, by United executives, that the company has been cynical, callous, and negligent in its domestic logistic planning, for decades, will get me on another domestic flight.

It took forever to rent the car. They needed more staff or just a faster process. Also, the car I was initially given wasn't in the space I was told so I needed to walk back in and have them find me another car. Also, I got a $465 bill when I was only expect $24 charge. I literally used the car for less than 6 hours!!! It was ridiculous and I'm still waiting for my credit card to be refunded. Great value but not work the stress and time I've spend getting my money back. Last rental with Thrifty

The drop off went fine. When I told the agent that we turned the car into about our horrible experience picking up the car, he deducted $10 off of the remaining fees. The pick up was the worst we have ever experienced. From the time that we arrived at the Thrifty counter until we were given the car, it was almost an hour. While we did receive a free upgrade, the wait was totally unacceptable. They gave us a coupon for 15% off of our NEXT Thrifty rental which probably should have just applied to the current rental.

The check in line for dollar was much shorter and moved quicker than the budget line so that was nice. But then we were sent to a spot with no car, then directed to a car with no keys, third car had a dead battery. Fourth car brought up for us by a very friendly hertz employee. Checkout was easy. I left the car. No one was around. I assume I left it in the right spot.

The gate staff at check-out were good. On a critical note, I was cheated two different ways. First, they gave me the car at 7/8 tank of gas, I returned it with the same, and they charged me $9.99/gal. to top off the tank. Second, they charged me $4.00 for an upgrade I didn't request. It has been beyond difficult trying to resolve these overcharges, they basically are happy to overcharge me but unwilling to make up for it in an honest manner. Very frustrating, and I don't like being robbed.

My husband picked up the car in Cleveland and we dropped it off in New York. We had to drive with the windows down the whole time because it smelled so bad inside from smoke. I have no idea what someone did in there because it wasn't a mild old smell. It was so bad that our clothing smelled like we had been smoking when we got out of the car. It was the worst part of the trip.

When reserving a car at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, the site listed a suburban rental location as "Cleveland" instead of Beachwood OH. This caused me to misunderstand where I was booking the car and therefore, a car was not reserved for me at the airport on a Friday night. At the Hertz customer service counter at the airport, I had to call Hertz customer service, cancel the reservation and rebook it. There were no cars left and I ended up taking a Buick SUV that was not cleaned or reviewed for body damage, which was extensive.

When we arrived to pick up our car, the person had “gone home for the day”. Avis helped us. Kind of. They gave us an Avis car, but told us it was in the budget section. So we wandered for 20 minutes trying to find this nonexistent car. I went back inside to ask for help. And security said the Avis person had gone home. And directed me to the correct spot. The car had not been cleaned. It was not the size car I requested. We had to fit 3 adults and 1 year old twins, with car seats, double stroller and all our luggage in this car. It was not a good experience. Do not choose budget. Or Avis for that matter.

The counter crew in Cleveland were beyond unprofessional. The clerk maybe said 5 words to me the entire transaction. Yet he spent two minutes talking to his coworker about scented candles, before even acknowledging my presence. after giving him my card and license, he then proceeded to talk to his other coworker about makeup. It was almost as if i wasn't there. There was no one else in line or at the counter, and what should have been a quick 5 min max transaction took over 15 minutes. Also, I rented an economy car, with gas milage in mind for my 200 mile trip, and was given a full size pickup that took 18 gallons of gas. Speaking of the truck, the drivers side wiper blade was dangling from the arm when I first tried to use it one hour outside of cleveland when I hit heavy rain. So I had to pull over and wait for the rain to pass. Not like I can stop and get a wiper blade in the middle of nowhere at 7pm on a sunday night. So much for inspecting and maintaining their vehicles. The crew in buffalo were great when I dropped off the vehicle. Understanding and very professional. The total opposite of Cleveland!!! Do Better Budget, Do Better.

The car was so dirty when I picked it up I was shocked. There were dirty masks on the floor, dog hair throughout the vehicle, pretzels on the seats, dirty shoe in back seat. The back end was not vacuum with leaves and dirt in the back. The back defrost didn't work, nor did the side mirrors defrost. The tire light kept coming on (I was okay with that due to the change in weather). All of this was brought to the attention of the person checking cars in and out and she said, 'oh okay.'.

We picked up the vehicle at around 11PM - luckily I noticed a huge dent in the passenger door and it was noted on the paperwork (they never mentioned it before we saw the car). It was dark when we picked up the car. The next morning we got into the car and it was clear it had not been cleaned - rugs were filthy, crumbs and such all over the seats - dirty on the outside. In short, a mess! The price was three times what I paid last year around the same time. I guess they figured "screw them" given the shortage of rental cars. Will likely never use Avis again unless forced to (as was the case this time due to hours of operation at the Cleveland airport location).

They gave me a Chevy Traverse. It was in good condition and clean.Picking up the car took way to long! It took the guy at least 20 minutes to do the paperwork. He kept calling someone on a radio to see what was available. Then he told me that they were just finishing cleaning it and it would be brought up to the door. I kept going outside and checking. There were a number of cars setting in the lot that would have been fine for me to use. After about 25 minutes, I went back to the desk to find out where the car was. He called someone the radio and told them to bring the car up to the door. After about 15 more minutes, they finally brought the car over.

Super Fast CheckoutI pulled into the return area, and was completely checked out in about a minute. The rental agent briefly walked around the car, checked the gas guage, and I was done. FAST!!The car rental return is difficult to find at the airport. It's off-site, and I didn't see any signs for it as I approached the airport. You have to go through the "Departures" area, and then follow signs to an off-site lot that's about another 5-10 minute drive. Be sure you consider this extra time before your departure!

I was told drop off was late, but still during business hours. The lights were on at the CLE airport drop off area, and the inside desk was staffed, but no one came out to close out my rental. Top tips for hiring a car in Cleveland

  • Cleveland is a fantastic working class American city, steeped in history and with a gritty authentic atmosphere. What lies beyond the downtown district, however, is truly magical: Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio’s Amish countryside, and the Cedar Point Amusement Park all lie within a short drive of Cleveland, making renting a car during your stay a fantastic idea. If you’re a cheese lover, make sure you also make the drive out to Heini’s Cheese Chalet in Millersburg and Broad Run Cheese & Swiss Heritage Winery in Sugarcreek, both located a little over an hour south of the downtown district.
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is located 9 miles away from the center of town, and the drive will only take about 20 minutes. Explore the best available deals using KAYAK, with major rental companies such as Alamo, Enterprise, Avis, and Budget to choose from. The car rental facility at the airport is easily accessed via a free shuttle, which leaves regularly from the door outside Baggage Claim 7.
  • Some major highways in the state of Ohio operate as tollways, so it is best to familiarize yourself with which ones you drive on and the specific conditions of your rental agreement. The I-90, I-80, and I-76 Highways come together to make the Ohio Turnpike, a major tollway that connects Cleveland with Toledo to the west and Pittsburgh to the east.
  • Northeast Ohio is renowned for its snowfall, experiencing the heaviest months of downfall between December and March. During this period, it is particularly important to tune in to local weather reports and apply extra caution while driving on icy roads. The primary rule for snow driving is to provide additional space to the car in front of you, as braking distances increase due to icy roads.
  • Book your rental car in Cleveland at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Compact rental cars in Cleveland are around 75% cheaper than other car types, on average
