Very easy and smooth experiencePros: It was a lovely car in good condition, very good value for the money. The lady at the desk was helpful and polite, picking the car up and dropping off were very easy and smooth processes.Cons: By the time the chap got to us to explain the finer details of the car's workings we had already figured it out.

Will rent with Kayak/Sixt again.Pros: The reservation, pick up and drop off process was incredibly smooth. We were greeted warmly by the rental staff and they were very helpful in answering all our questions. Upon our return I was met in the garage by a very friendly staff person who swiftly guided me through the return process which was accomplished without a hitch.

Trap!Cons: Car was not reliable. Car model is lousy and it is not good on highways. The police fined us for a lack of tag and SIXT did not warn about tags that we must have it around EU. SIXT is irresponsible careless and refused to resolve this problem.
Pros: Staff was friendly, pick up and drop off very easy, and we had a very nice and clean car.

Gave away carPros: NothingCons: Hertz in Salzburg gave away our rental car because we arrived too late in the day. Apparently we only had an hour window period to pick car up. Had to rent another more expensive car. Also the insurence purchased through kayak did not cover anything. So had to purchase additional insurance through hertz. Terrible experience. Will be contacting hertz and kayak to formally complain.

Salzburg Hertz car rentalPros: Nice car, Opel CorsaCons: A trainee helped me and took very long. I took insurance via you with Allianz, because it was not with Hertz, I had to give an extra €1000 hold on my credit Card which will only be released in 10 days from now....this is totally unacceptable, but there is no choice once you want to have the car.
Pros: I rented an intermediate Ford Focus or similar from the airport and was offered the BMW Mini Cooper on arrival, which turned out to be really fun to drive and comfortable. The check in process was easy. We were not gouged an exorbitant amount for required insurance. We returned the car right at closing and they let us leave the car for them to process in the morning. We were charged the correct amount without any problems.Cons: Everything was great.

They do not look out for the safety of your childrenCons: When we arrived the Budget attendant saw that I had young children but did not offer booster seats for them. In the USA they would not need the seats, but in Europe apparently they do. That lesson cost us 436 Euros and loss oh half our vacation in Salzburg. The Police were even outraged that Budget would allow us to leave with out proper booster chairs. I understand that we are visitors and we should have done research on the booster seat requirements, so we do take some of the blame. I have tried to contact Budget to see if they would at least reimburse me the rental, which was half the cost of the fie, but they have denied my request. I will not rent from Budget/Avis again.

Cons: Took forever to get our rental car. There was a new person, her first time working alone, which was not problem. But it was when the computer system crashed, and lost our reservation was the problem. We were in a foreign country, trying to communicate in another language. It took almost 2 hours to get our rental.

Pros: Staff was very friendly and helpful. They went the extra mile to resolve a problem with the car. We were very pleased.
Cons: Customer service. We wanted to shorten our reservation to 4 days with drop-off by 12:29 pm July 6. I called toll 1-800# & was told to call local # we rented from. I called there numerous times. each time the woman said she was very busy and to call back later then hung up.many more problems....

Pros: Somewhat better pricing than other car rental agencies. No problem with picking up in Salzburg and dropping off at Munich airport (i.e.: a one-way rental). Very capable and cordial rental agent in the Salzburg office.Cons: All European car rentals seem to be insanely expensive, as compared with American agencies. I don't think it's just the higher taxes. A mystery.
Pros: Nice car, fairly easy pickup and drop off. Employees were helpful and efficient, even while dealing with many other matters.Cons: As always with rentals, it actually costs so much more than is advertised with taxes and insurance, etc. Plus “Dollar” was nowhere to be seen on the building, only on the paper we signed. I’m sure there are good reasons for this but it always feels strange to me.
Nobody thereCons: On Saturday morning there was nobody at the drop-off location. I was supposed to key-in a code at the key drop box but none had been provided on the rental agreement that I could find so I had to e-mail their Vienna office confirming that I had, in fact, returned the car on time. I also noticed that the clock at the drop-off box was an hour fast, which would, I suppose, make it look like cars were returned late when they were returned on time.
Excellent car but terrible support servicePros: The car was very good. A recent model, with low mileage on the clock and a high level of equipment.Cons: The car was booked with Alamo. The details advised me to pick up the car at the Enterprise desk at Salzburg Airport and when I arrived the car was provided by Buchbinder - confusing isn't it. The car was very good. However, I had a minor incident on the road which caused irreparable damage to a tyre . I was able to fit the spare wheel - with a "spacesaver" tyre that had a maximum speed limit of 80kph (50 mph) - and I continued my journey to my hotel. From my hotel I tried to contact the hirer, using the number given on their scanty information pack. Seeing that it was a toll-free number, which can sometimes be difficult from a cellphone, I called from the landline in my hotel room. The number did not work. I asked the hotel receptionist to try the number for me and it did not work. I even tried calling from a public telephone in the street - it did not work! From the internet I obtained the rental desk number for Enterprise and was able to get through. I had hoped to be able to arrange a local replacement of the damaged tyre. However, with my limited German and the desk clerk's limited English and even more limited knowledge of cars I had the greatest difficulty getting her to understand that I had a burst tyre. She suggested I return the car to Salzburg Airport and pick up a replacement (a round trip of about 300km) but finally offered to get someone else to call me back. A man did call, about an hour and a half later, but his English was even worse and we finally agreed that I would just return the car at the end of my stay, using the spare tyre. The journey back to Salzburg on the Austrian autobahn at speeds limited to 80kph was very harrowing, with heavy lorries frequently coming up close behind, flashing lights and sounding horns for me to speed up or get out of the way. Overall I felt very isolated and vulnerable and completely let down by the lack of service from the hire company. Thankfully the burst tyre was only a minor incident. I dread to think of the problems if the incident had been serious. This was the worst level of service I have ever experienced and I will never use Alamo/Enterprise or their associates again.
While you can easily navigate the hometown of Mozart on foot or with the help of public transportation, a rental car is essential to explore the Austrian countryside or other picturesque villages near Salzburg. Take the scenic ride to Austria’s Lake Region, or check out the world’s largest ice caves in Werfen. Salzburg is also conveniently located near the German border.
All the major rental car companies can be found at Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG), the second largest international airport in Austria. The car rental counters are located opposite the main terminal, on the ground floor of the car park, which is accessed via a covered walkway. Make sure to obtain the Highway Toll Sticker (Vignette) from your car rental agency to avoid fines.
While traffic in the city center is a little busy at times, drivers in Salzburg are typically well-behaved. Avoid taking the car to the Old Town area, as it features many narrow roads, one-way streets, restricted areas, and unpredictable pedestrians. Outside of that area, Salzburg is very easy to navigate, and the roads in and around the city are in great condition.
Just like any busy central European city, Salzburg experiences some heavy traffic during peak hour, particularly between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and then again between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Fridays the roads get busier starting at 3 p.m. However, both the city’s roads and surrounding highways move constantly, even in peak hour. The A1 between Vienna and Salzburg also gets busier on weekends.
