Call prior to pick up to confirm all minute detail
Pros: Convenience of rental pickup at airport, and ease of drop-off procedures.
Cons: Couldn't pickup reserved car due to paying with Visa debit card. Specifically reserved an SUV, but couldn't get anything bigger than full size, which was too small for my 6'+ height, and a higher rate than reserved SUV. Retired USMC, disabled vet and on assignment as government official, yet could not rent a simple SUV due to traveling with only my debit card. Car was dirty on the outside as well.

Pros: The guy at DCA who rented us the car was very nice.
Cons: Our car's transmission died and Alamo told us to take a cab to the nearest airport to get a new car. We got a smaller car. They treated me as if I'd crashed the car or done something else wrong. No efforts have been made to reimburse us for the cab.

Pros: Our flight was delayed an hour. We got to the rental car place at 1200 am, which was the initial time to pick up the car and the place was still closed. When we called to explain that our flight was delayed but we still needed our reservation. They were not helpful and we did not get a rental car. We had to stay and pay for a hotel due to this. Not even the next morning.

I will not rent with advantage again
Cons: Local renters without insurance are required to purchase all insurance regardless of what their credit card covers. Car was dented and scratched but it takes so long (10-15 minutes per person) to check in I didn't have time to swap out the dented car for one that wasn't dented. They're terrible.

Very poorly organized operation
Pros: The price was low and there was no charge for drop off a t different location.
Cons: From arrival to exiting the lot took about two hours. First there was a half hour wait for the shuttle. Then there was an hour wait to get the keys. And then another 30 minutes in line trying to exist the lot. The delay was because the car first in line could not leave the lot because it had been sold!!! It had been rented to a family with small kids that needed kids seats shifted into a new car etc etc, just a time wasting disaster for everyone that had the misfortune to rent from such a completely incompetent company.

Cons: They don't advertise the fact that if you are a local renter, they FORCE you to buys their full coverage insurance at $25 a day unless you physically present your insurance card. This was on top of a $18 / day rental fee, so it was cheaper to slide four feet to the right and rent from a competitor without such a policy but with the same daily rate.

Pros: Good rates on the weekend in DC.
Cons: Check-in was way too slow. On return, lot attendant couldn't provide receipt and when I got home, I saw that I was overcharged by $150+.
Pros: Very convenient. Upgrade to bigger car at no cost. Good customer service. Easy after-hours drop-off.
Cons: Outside of car was dirty, but hey, it was a free upgrade!

Pros: Received a great car (Mercedes C300) for the price of a low end compact car. Car was in overall good condition, fairly low in miles, and had surprisingly good fuel economy. Dealing with the agency was fast and smooth, and we had no issues.
Cons: There was a little bit of sticky residue on the car's central console, but we just cleaned it up with some cleaning wipes, so not a big deal (especially since we got a nicer car than expected).

Pros: Got an upgraded vehicle for free
Cons: That the car did not come with a full tank of gas. This is an inconvenience and a challenge to try to return the car back with the same amount of gas. Ultimately it seems like the company is being lazy and this is probably a money maker for you as many cars like mine probably come back with more gas than when picked up. So I essentially paid for gas for the next customer. Cars used to always come with a full tank and sadly it seems like you are doing this more and more.

Cons: I was told that I'd get a refund if I brought it back early. When I did I was told that I can get was on a weekly rate and that 5-6-7 days were all the same price.
Pros: The location is convenient -- it's easy to access via public transportation. The price was better by $1-2 dollars a day.
Cons: The customer service was TERRIBLE. I've rented from here twice, about 2 years apart, and both experiences were very bad.

Cons: Reserved car on line with no problem using my debit card. Arrived at Avis, line was very long. Waited in line one hour to reach agent. At end of check-out process she told me my card we declined and she could not rent me a car. I was using my card frequently and it was never declined. She insisted she could not rent me a car because of a "soft credit check" by Equifax. So I went next door to Hertz and gave them my business.

Cons: The rental was over $125 more than quoted on Kayak. Waited in line for over an hour to be told that if I didn't like the price AVIS was giving me I could go to a different counter in the terminal.

Poor Customer Service
Pros: Terrible customer service. I left a package in the back seat of the car I rented and when trying to call for customer service in the DCA airport nobody answered.
I had to drive all the way to the airport and they couldn't find the car that I rented because I didn't have my contract with them even though o showed them my reservation number. Not helpful at all.

Prepaid gas? No thanks
Pros: They stuck me with prepaid gas even though I didn't want it. When I objected they said they would take off the charge if I brought it back full. I brought it back full and they asked for my gas receipt, which I didn't receive at the gas station. Eventually they took off the charge but acted like they were doing me a big favor.
Also their pickup/drop off process at DCA is a mess.

DCA Avis Rental Counter - Comically Poor Service
Cons: Your folks working at the counter at DCA hopefully aren't actually getting paid for that "work". I watched the woman helping me clean her glasses for 10 minutes while she had a conversation with the customer being helped next to me, about how women at the Washington Nationals games no longer wear panties. I quite literally started laughing at how awful, incompetant, lazy, and rude your service was. It by itself ruined my day and ensured Avis will never recieve another dollar from me.
Further, in the DCA garage, I was yelled at for being confused as to why the garage floor indicactes one parking spot number, while the small tags that hang above the same spaces indicate another. Obviously its the customer's fault for not realizing that, as was pointed out to me. There was also a huge dead mosquito in the back of my Mazda 6 which was great.
Avis - suggest you change your motto to Lazy and Incompetant so people have a better idea of what to expect. Thanks!

Cons: The attendant at the kiosk was a little chatty with the people ahead of us in the line. So it felt like we waited in that line longer than usual. Additionally, the driver's door was dented so we had to wait in another line to find out how to deal with it. Once that was sorted, it was a breeze and returning the car was very fast

Great car but Poor customer service
Pros: The car ran well- nice and clean.
Cons: We couldn't find the ez pass so tried calling for help. After 30 minutes of getting shuffled from one person to another we hung up as no one could tell us where to find it.
Also, we declined the insurance but were charged for it anyway. I'm sure an honest mistake but one that cost us an extra $30.99 for a three hour rental.

Pros: Great car, excellent mileage.
Cons: Rep changed my reservation at pickup which caused me to be charged for mileage. I had to call AVIS and talk to the supervisor to get the mileage removed. He was very helpful, and removed the extra charge but it took a long time.
Cons: It would have been for the location to be fully disclosed upon booking. I got to the airport and ended up needing a shuttle to get to them. Never got the rental cause I didn't have the time to go find the shuttle stop. Waste of time

Required extra insurance and did not make it clear during booking.
Employees provided poor, slow, inefficient service and were generally angry and difficult to work with.
The office smelled very bad.
Location not well marked and hard to find.
They did not have the car I reserved.
I could go on but have wasted enough time w/ this reservation already.

Terrible rental policy for local renters: Avoid!!
Cons: I arrived at the counter in Arlington to find out that they have a very restrictive rental policy for local renters, requiring written proof of a current automobile comprehensive, collision and liability insurance policy in renters name covering injury to third persons or property (they do not accept credit card insurance, not even if primary coverage) and have mileage limitations. None of that info was provided at the time of booking. Only advantage and E-Z car have this policy. If you're a local customer, avoid them..

Pros: Dropoff was easy, with a shuttle by every 10 min or so,
Cons: There were no signs at the airport for EZ Rent-a-car, just Advantage, for off-sitr rentals. I had a very difficult time getting through to a person on the phone, taking about 10 min, so by that time I happened to see a shuttle pass. Also the service desk person tries to tell me what my previously insurance plan covered, but he was wrong and it's just a sales technique, which was annoying.

Walked away with no car
Pros: The office was fine and the problems weren’t the fault of the staff behind the counter. I’m sure their cars are fine.
Cons: Completely misinformed and ended so frustrated I left without my rental. They fail to inform any renter that a $350 hold PLUS the cost of the rental will be placed on your credit card for the duration of the trip. And then, slowly refunded to you, in a matter of 5-7 business days while it sits pending, damaging your available credit. They also fail to tell you, you will need to produce a physical proof of insurance document. The rental company is outside of a metro area where the average person doesn’t not own a car, much less walk around with proof of drivers insurance. All of this, never mentioned before I even handed over my license and address, and swiped my card of course. I knew Advantage was bad about similar things, booked with EZ Car to avoid the hassle, and it’s turns out, also unannounced - they are the same company! So, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Pros: The actual car - it was in good condition body wise and was an updated model
Cons: everything else! this was the worst experience in customer service. there was an outstanding (in a bad way) wait time - over 45 min. and the management and/or staff was very reactionary instead of being proactive including the 800#. overall this experience was very poor. Although the manager apologized for my experience, it was too little too late.

Cons: First, it was hard to find the location of Herz. I reserved the car for 8 and arrived at 9:15. The lady at the counter said I'm late so I can not rent the car. I called Herz and reserved for 10 a.m.. She wouldn't let me rent the car, saying that they are low on cars, but she gives other people their keys. I asked her to reserve a car for me at the airport. She reserved for me the most expensive car. My initial reservation was $120. She reserved for me for $300+. At the end I rented from enterprise. Enterprise has excellent customer service.

Pros: The worst first experience.
Cons: Waited 3 1/2 hrs for a vehicle at hotel after reserving 48 hrs prior on Kayak.com. Sent me to airport location that couldn’t help because you have to have a round trip ticket. I live locally. Then the agent at the initial location calls me back saying he had a vehicle. Had to take the shuttle from airport back to the hotel. I wasted a total of 5hrs and still didn’t leave with a vehicle. I walked over to Enterprise and was in and out in 10 mins. By the way, if you are paying with a debit card Hertz runs a credit checks but they do not tell you this. This will ding your credit score. Enterprise takes a deposit for the vehicle and refunds it back.

HERTZ DID NOT PROVIDE THE RENTAL
Cons: I did not receive the minivan that I reserved through KAYAK's website, nor did I receive ANY minivan from Hertz.
I sent an email to KAYAK and heard back from "Shannon" from customer service, saying that any and all mistakes were made by HERTZ.
My message was, in part, the following:
"I rented a minivan from Hertz (Confirmation # G8204778611) yesterday (Tuesday, January 19th) for pick-up at a Hertz location in Arlington, Virginia (1401 Lee Highway, Arlington VA) on Thursday (Jan. 21st at 10am). I was to drop off that minivan on Saturday (Jan. 23, 2016 at 9am) in Lincoln, Nebraska. The rental cost was $382.67. I also purchased rental insurance, amounting to another $27.00.
This afternoon (approximately 4pm, Wednesday January 20th), the 1401 Lee Highway Hertz location called, telling me that they DO NOT HAVE a minivan for me. I have been transferred from office to office, and no one can help. I need a minivan tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am, otherwise I will be stuck in DC for at least three additional days as a major snowstorm approaches.
So, why would KAYAK.COM advertise a minivan rental from a Hertz location which did not have a single minivan on hand? Hertz (both that local business, as well as the Customer Service center) cannot help me with a thing...."
If I cannot rely upon listings on Kayak.com, then I will need to re-direct my personal business to a responsible booking website, as well as inform my employer, my clients, my family, my friends, my fellow professional colleagues, professional affiliations, and any other person/institution in which I am affiliated, etc., that Kayak should be avoided.
I expect more than just an email from a customer service representative, trying to pass the buck off to Hertz and not even providing me with a phone number to speak to someone at Kayak about my situation.
I was almost stranded in Washington, DC, without a place to sleep and without any means to leave prior to the snowstorm. Kayak's response showed only indifference.
