FAQs - booking Japan flights

  • What direct flights are available from India to Japan?

Direct flights are available when you fly from New Delhi Airport (DEL) to Tokyo Haneda Airport with Japan Airlines or ANA. When you fly to Japan from other major Indian airports, such as Mumbai or Hyderabad, your journey will usually involve a single layover along the route.

  • What are popular layovers on flights from India to Japan?

Whilst there are some direct flights from India to Japan, you might want to take an indirect flight if it’s more convenient. For instance, from Hyderabad Airport you can fly to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) with Singapore Airlines, which commonly requires a layover at Singapore.

  • Where is the nearest airport if I want to visit Universal Studios Japan?

Osaka International Airport (ITM) is the closest airport to the Universal Studios Japan theme park. However, rather than flying from India to Osaka, it is generally faster and cheaper to fly to Tokyo Haneda or Tokyo Narita and then take a domestic flight to reach Osaka. Once you land in Osaka, you can take public transport to reach Universal Studios in generally just under 50min.

  • Is there Wi-Fi on board flights from India to Japan?

If you are travelling for work, you can use the internet on board flights. For instance, ANA operates routes, such as New Delhi Airport (DEL) to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), and provides passengers with free Wi-Fi for the duration. You can also get free Wi-Fi on flights with Cathay Pacific from DEL to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT).

  • What visa do I need to travel to Japan?

Indian citizens are required to have a visa for short stays in Japan. Visas should be applied for in advance of your travel and will allow visitors to stay in Japan for temporary periods of up to 90 days on leisure or work trips. When you arrive in Japan, you may be asked to provide evidence of your return flight or onward travel.

  • Can I shower upon arrival at airports in Japan?

After a long journey, you might want to freshen up. At Toyko Narita Airport (NRT) there are eight private shower cubicles. These can be found before the Departures area and are available to arriving passengers for free. Osaka Airport (KIX) also has free shower rooms on the 2nd floor of Aeroplaza.

  • Is food served on flights from India to Japan?

As the journey is long, you will want to ensure food is included in the ticket price. For instance, if you fly with ANA, Air India or Cathay Pacific, a meal is provided during the journey. Whereas, a flight with VietJet Air provides food, but this comes at an additional cost.

  • How long is the flight to Japan?

An average direct flight from India to Japan takes 21h 19m, covering a distance of 9914 km. The most popular route is New Delhi - Tokyo with an average flight time of 7h 10m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Japan?

The cheapest ticket to Japan from India found in the last 72 hours was ₹ 33,300 one-way, and ₹ 32,939 round-trip. The most popular route is New Delhi Indira Gandhi Intl to Tokyo Haneda and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was ₹ 42,362.

  • Which airlines fly to Japan?

ANA, Air India & Japan Airlines fly the most frequently from India to Japan.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Japan?

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is Tokyo (93% of total searches to Japan). The next most popular destinations are Osaka (6%) and Sapporo (0.3%). Searches for flights to Okinawa (0.3%), to Fukuoka (0.3%) and to Hiroshima (0.3%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Japan flight deals.
  • If you're travelling to Japan for work, it may be convenient to fly to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND). Tokyo Haneda Airport is located roughly a 20min drive or a 40min train ride from Tokyo’s central business and financial districts.
  • Should you want to hire a car upon your arrival at a Japan airport, you should familiarise yourself with the laws of the road before you set off. For example, if you're with kids that are smaller than 140 cm, or younger than 6 years old, they must be in a child seat.
  • If you want to visit Japan’s northern region or enjoy some skiing during your trip, you can fly from Mumbai Airport (BOM) to Sapporo Chitose Airport (CTS) with just a single layover on the route. This will give you easy access to Sapporo city and to the mountainous regions there.

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

I cancelled the flights in good time but could only get a partial refund. I was not warned of this.

Crew experience was more transnational, seats were so close together (LtoR and FtoB) that it was difficult to enjoy much of anything. When the person in front leaned back, there is no space for me. Sadly it was a flight to be endured not experienced.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

My seat was sold off to someone else. Had to wait 9 hours to catch the next filght. Definitely will never use Cathay Pacific again. Bad, very bad airline. will comment on google reviews too.

The aircraft was slightly newer but the food was very bad. Bland and uninteresting. Nothing special at all.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Everything was good food could be better but ok for economy on my 2nd flight the head ph jack are bad you have to hold pushed in to hear anything but other then that very nice service

We requested special assistance and Cathay Pacific provided it in Sydney, but we were completely forgotten about in Hong Kong - when we really needed the help to catch our connecting flight. Really disappointing service.

Would have liked working outlets on the flight. The first meal was very bleh, the second meal was a lot better so overall okay meals

In flight entertainment system including wifi were down and passengers got tortured for the 16 hours flight without any of these. Food was spoiled as well for the first meal provided but second meal was Ok. Overall a horrible experience which was not at all expected for such a long haul flight which was expected to be THE most memorable part of my planned trip for family.

An overnight Doha to KL. Great sleep, good service and tasty food in business class

The cabin was quite noisy as there were lots of children travelling for the school holidays. Found the selection of movies limited.

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

Orange juice change to mineral water . Should keep the orange juice.

Entertainment system was too old, crew were unorganised during boarding

No recognition for one World Emerald member. Business class seat has flat bed

No recognition for one World Emerald member. I got row 1 in business class and it was pathetic. No leg space, cramped space, less recline

Legs space in the business class cabin is too small and pillow is dirty!

Paid for seats near the window but given seats right at the back, near the toilets. This location was so noisy with the blasts from the aircraft engines blowing beside. Not a nice one 😞.

Flight was delayed 2 hours, which seems regular with this airline. Aircrew were avarage, friendly but robotic. At check in I asked for a spare seat. Got some stupid response about loading capacity (it was 85% full!) Then passengers behind jumped up and moved to vacant exit rows, they obviously didn't pay for. Waited over 20+ minutes to disembark, with ground staff trying to squash all passengers onto 1 bus. Causing even more delays. Unsafe and stupid! But this is a problem at Saigon airport. Overall a very average experience!

In experience we didn't even get water unless it was paid for. Even Bamboo Airlines provided free water. The flight was cold with no blanket being provided. The flight attendants were not responsive in keeping the passengers under control. I complained about fellow passengers playing loud music several times before one of the flight attendants to action. I will not recommend flying with Vietjet unless things improve.

I have few bad reviews about VietJet, but my experience was really good and it worth every penny..

Not even free water. NO legroom. Narrow seats. Not enough room to even hold a book at reading distance in front of you.

No food? No movies? No water?? On an international flight, really???

No water or snacks. Crew did not give us arrival cards. There was no need for more than 1 flight attendant as they did not do anything

I got to the airport and flight was cancelled without notice

Some chair in the flight should be maintained, but I think they may not have time to check every seats, since it is high demand in this period.

Our experience was the worst. Over 2 days flight was changed and delayed 4 times. Not impressed

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct. However, the TV's did not work so I'm glad we brought our own entertainment.

Need to update the staff of the airport. They tell luggage weight according to they want.

The Air India lounge in Delhi , was very disappointing! The food was of poor quality and options were limited especially for vegetarians!! Beverages were fine. The in flight crew was excellent! . They helped me with my seat controls - the controls did not work without a hassle or assistance!! A very poor showing for a Business cabin!!! Post flight , the wheel chair passengers ( including Me) were “ shepherded and left waiting twice (an hour or more) before taking us to immigration! I chose to Fly Air India because I want. to patronize our National carrier with the hope that the experience will improve!!! Regrettably, I will have to look at other options for my next trip to India

Mediocre staff, crappy food selections and no entertainment for a 14 hour flight. The only good thing was that it was a direct flight.

Entertainment system was not working and was told I would get a voucher and have not got one. No toiletries were available not even a toothbrush false sweet talk by ground staff

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Very very impressed with the proactive care and alertness with which ABHISHEK Chowdhary took care of us. Quietl, dignified , very alert, and meticulous. Very impressed. Also with SUNiL Kumar who was there for us in a very helpful way. SHERLY ALEX On Flight 119, BOM TO JFK CUSTOMER ON SEAT 21C, 21ST March 2024
