Driving in Lake Como is an ideal way to explore the lakes region and the local Lombardy area of Italy.  Lake Como’s coastal road known as the “via Regina” has been noted as one of the best roads for a summer holiday drive.  This ancient route provides stunning scenery of the lake and mountains, stretching for just over 100 miles in a circular route around the lake.  Springtime is also a good time to experience this road trip as you will experience the lush foliage surrounding the lake come into full bloom.  You can stop off at various quaint lakeside villages on your route, including the charming village of Bellagio, one of the most picturesque of the region.

Although Italy’s major cities tend to be quite hectic for drivers, the smaller towns and outlying roads are relatively easy to navigate and well signposted.  Remember that driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Italy.  Also, bear in mind that most of Italy’s motorways are toll roads which usually involves taking a ticket as you pass through the toll booth which you can then pay with cash or card.  It is advisable to carry a handful of loose change in your vehicle.  There are other alternative roads which are free to use but it may take you longer, although it may be useful if you are not in a rush.  Roads vary from good wide roads to narrow winding mountain roads, and most two-lane country routes are well maintained.  Make sure to stay in the driving limit as speed cameras are numerous in Italy.

To hire a car in Italy, drivers must be at least 18 years of age and have held a licence for at least one year.  However, some vehicle categories are restricted for certain age groups so make sure to check this with your chosen car hire company.  There may also be a surcharge for drivers under 25 so check your rental agreement for any extra charges related to this.  All drivers must have a full valid driving licence and an International Driving Permit to comply with EU regulations which can be obtained from your local licencing authority for a small fee.
