If you have to rent a car in Reykjavik you need to buy their insurance.

PhilipOct 2024

Be sure you know about the kilometer tax and whether the vehicle has a spare tire or something else. Check the condition of the tires since road surfaces vary widely and at some times of the year ice or snow could be dangerous. If you rent a plug-in hybrid vehicle, find out how to charge it. Traffic in Reykjavik isn't bad if you are used to city driving. Traffic outside Reykjavik is light. If you are not familiar with roundabouts, ask how they work--there are LOTS of them.

DannyJul 2024

Arrange a phone number or a good pick up plan. It was really annoying that we couldn’t find or call anyone when we where at airport.

Very easy to drive in the city. We did not have any problems. The only tip is to take a photo of your license plate for when they ask for it to pay for parking

Verified travelerJul 2023

Always check if you have to pay for parking! It’s easy to forget about because they simply record you with a camera as you drive in to the parking lot. Also, the way they drive in roundabouts is different! To exit, use the inner lane not the outer lane! Also, respect the speed limit. They have a lot of cameras

Verified travelerJul 2023

Unless you are unable to walk, don't drive. Most things are pretty easy walking distance and you see so much more on foot. Plenty of e-scooters to grab if you so desire. We only rented as we were going out to the countryside for a couple days.

Bring a credit card or inquire about what kind of cards they accept. Otherwise, hitchhike like we were forced to do instead of renting. It's not that bad.

Looking to rent a car during your time in Reykjavik? For travelers landing at Keflavik International Airport, the rental car counters can be found in the Arrival Hall of the airport’s main terminal. If you are arriving in Reykjavik Airport on a domestic flight, you will find the Europcar rental desk on the west side of the airport and the Hertz rental desk on the east side of the airport.
Travelers should be aware that many of the tunnels and bridges in Iceland are one way and the right of way is given to whoever arrives first. This is particularly important because these bridges and tunnels tend to be quite narrow, and nobody wants to have to back up on a tiny bridge.
One of the major advantages of renting a car in Reykjavik is that it truly enables you to visit any part of the country. Many wonderful sites and natural wonders are easily accessible on a day trip from Reykjavik such as the Blue Lagoon, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, and Kirkjufjara Beach. However, make sure to keep an eye on your fuel tank, as gas stations are sparse in Iceland.
Despite its relatively small size, Reykjavik still experiences the typical morning rush hour from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and evening rush hour from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. However, drivers will be happy to hear that the congestion is by no means severe, so, besides a few of the downtown streets backing up, there isn’t too much to worry about.

Cancelling the reservation was painful. The instructions said it had to be done by phone. When I phoned the person said why didnt you do it on line, I cant do the cancellation, you’ll have to call a different number at a different time. They were completely unhelpful in trying to change the type of vehicle (this was months in advance of the reservation date). Zero out of ten.

I feel like this company is a scam. They are trying to charge us for not having a full tank when we filled up at the gas station in their parking lot before turning car in. They also are claiming there are new scratches on the vehicle but again not true and they are refusing to send us pictures and now they will not even respond to emails. Stay away!

I like the vehicle and the fact that both pickup and dropoff were easy and fast. I could have used more familiarization with the car since it was a plug-in hybrid. I had no idea how to charge it. I also would like to have known that there was no spare tire, only a "mobility kit" that didn't have any instructions. Finally, it would have been good to know about the per kilometer tax, which increased the cost of the rental beyond the estimate. I asked if km were unlimited, but was not told about the tax. I understand the tax amount could not be predicted because it was not possible to know how many km we would drive, but at least I would not have been surprised by the extra cost.

When I returned the car to Avis at KEF airport, the person from Avis started taking photo pictures of the left rear door before doing inspection, and then she said there is a small damage at the front edge of the left rear door. I still can't find the damage. She then remove the dust over the area and said it is a dent can only be seen from a certain angle. She explained to me that this dent could be a touch by the car, which was parked besides my rented car, when they open the car door. The dent is so small that it is so difficult to be seen even you have been told it is there, but the lady can found it before inspection.

There was no pick up. Also no person could be called. We had to take a taxi to find the rental company. When we explained it was annoying and asked to be compensated we got a discount for adding the additional driver for free to compensate the expensive taxi. This was good! Car had many warning lights and we went back they said it was still good. We also didn’t have any problems during the rental period so all was fine.

Rented a car at a Downtown facility asked her to the airport as intended. When I attempted to change it to the airport facility, I was charged over $200 for a cancellation fee. I’ll dispute a charge and I’ll never use the service again.
