The roads are windy and steep in some areas. We rented a standard because they are so much more affordable but an automatic would have made life easier. Having said that, the standard was fine, and there are barely any traffic lights so the majority of the shifting is traffic circles and going up and down hills. There are lots of beautiful places to drive so having a car is essential. If possible, would stick with a smaller car bc the roads are pretty narrow.

The in town roads are super narrow and there are people and cars vying for the same space at times. We often had to put our side view mirrors in so we wouldn’t hit other cars or people on narrow sidewalks. The out of town roads were much better and it was way to get around.

Sao Miguel is closest to Ponta Delgada and is the biggest of the islands. With a rental car you will be able to visit many of its hotspots such as the Caldeira Velha waterfall and Furnas Hot Springs. In the Azores region there are many other islands that you can also visit. So why limit yourself to just Sao Miguel? With a rental car you can explore them all.
Ponta Delgada is an international airport that services the Azores Islands. Although it is not a very large airport, there are a number of car rental companies right inside the main hall of the terminal. This includes international agencies like Hertz, Enterprise, and Europcar as well as local providers.

My experience with Ilha Verde was superb. I rented the cheapest car they had for an impromptu addition to a separate Azores island trip already planned where I had already paid $1,300 for that vehicle. Ilha verde had a very reasonably-priced Twingo for our time at this last-minute addition. Upon vehicle pickup, the attendant kindly alerted me that the Twingo didn’t have adequate power to get up the steep slopes the island is know for and that for $11 Euros total, we could upgrade to a more powerful vehicle with additional room. In the end, it was worth every Euro and turn in was a breeze. Additionally, when I had already left the airport, I realized that I did not have a full tank of gas, even though my checkout paperwork said I did. I addressed this issue during vehicle turn in, and two days later, they credited me for the amount of fuel that was missing. A+ experience with Ilha Verde. I would rent from them again.

The cars were not at the location we rented. We stood in line for over 30 minutes, then a lady said anyone who has a booked rental car, get in this van. Well, there were so many of us, we couldn’t all fit. Once we got in the van, it was at least a 10 minute drive out into the countryside to the place to get the car. Then we had to go back to town to pick up our people who couldn’t fit in the van. It was a mess. The car was nice and clean. But on return, I’ve never seen someone look at a car so thoroughly trying to find any little thing wrong with it.

Good vehicle that kept us safe and sturdy as we drove throughout Sao Miguel. We read reviews beforehand and highly encourage you to go to the Blue Elephant Car Wash in Ponta Delgada so you don’t get any charges for a dirty car. The only downside was that we had to get a shuttle to and from the airport. This was provided by Drive On Holidays but added time to the beginning and end of our trip.
