Cons: The attractive cost of $8 dollars a day for a car rental is misleading and Kayak should let you know that. A) There are mandatory insurance costs in Mexico. B) Renting from Budget or a trusted name brand from the US is not the same as renting as if you were in the US. They are basically independent companies that are somehow allowed to use these name brands. I tried calling Budget customer service to let them know I felt that I was getting scammed and they said they do not have access to any of the billing information. Overall the representative said "I'm sorry, there is NOTHING I can do to help." I wound up paying $321.00 for renting an economy car for 5 days. I would have paid less than half of that in the US.

Pros: There is no disclosure when you do reservation that you will be asked for a deposit between $800-1200 USD. The cost of insurance is 4 times higher than daily rental. Even when they use the electronic transaction, they ask to sign anot empty voucher as well as a blank paper that needs your signature, and states that you are responsible for 100% of the car even when you get the insurance. Budget should look closely and have a universal/international policy for rentals

Cons: We received a great rate,, and purchased full insurance coverage from another insurance company. The manager of the agency wanted a $8500 U S dollar deposit! Three other U S citizens were told the same thing while there, in the twenty minutes I was there. Dishonest business practices.
Pros: People were courteous and polite.
Cons: (i) Before the tell you the price you must first get in their van and leave the airport. Impossible to compare rates with other companies.
(ii) I expected to pay for Mexican auto insurance, but the required insurance unexpectedly increased the price from $40/week to over $450/week.
(iii) There were over 15 individual items that left the required insurance void. Most were up to ridiculous because they were overly vague and heavily favored Budget.
(iv) Most of the insurance and rental contracts were unreadable because they had been photocopied so many times.

Cons: the inspection of the car upon return is ridiculous. it took nearly 5 minutes for the guy to review every nook and cranny in the car; there is no room for error and you better cross your fingers no rocks hit your car on the freeway. upon taking my things out of the car, I accidentally spilled some water. to my dismay, they actually noticed it and say they need to take off the car sheet to blow dry it and "clean it"! they were going to charge me $20. not much i know, but for a simple water spill, that's ridiculous! don't rent from them during your stay in cancun.

Way more expensive than you think
Pros: The car was clean, and large enough to fit four adults with luggage.
Cons: While the car was rather affordable, the insurance was rather expensive. We arrived to find that the insurance through our credit card was valid IF we payed a deposit on the full price of the car (over $11k USD). This left is the option of their minimum liability that still came with a $1k USD deposit, a middle policy with a $500 USD deposit, or a full coverage policy with a $120 USD deposit. This would have been extremely useful to know ahead of time so we could have budgeted accordingly.
Also, take very extensive and detailed photos and videos of your car before you drive it from the lot.

Avoid at all costs - seriously!
Cons: I have nothing positive to say about this experience, it was a total nightmare and a complete scam. They could not produce a contract for us in English and expected us to be okay with signing documents and having a $1600 "hold" put on my credit card. Customer service reps were extremely rude and even laughed at us. Apparently our frustration and desperation were funny to them. After being moved into another line with a different rep, I walked out and rented a car at another company next door.

Designed to take advantage of travelers
Cons: Hate doing this but this location is designed specifically to rip off tourist. Steer very clear and find a car rental company that is more transparent from the get-go. If you go here with a "reservation" you will find yourself:
Tired from a long day of travel and possibly too weak to fight them. You will be on their turf without a reservation somewhere else and in fear that you will not be able to get a car somewhere else. And you may not want to put your family through the additional time needed to find an alternative. The latter is what happened to me. I was taking my wife to Akumal, it was late and while I can personally fight someone on principal, I looked over at my very tired wife and did not want to have her put through it all.
Buyer beware. This place is specifically designed to take advantage of you.
Cons: They didn't have our "confirmed" car for our "reservation" They tried to push a luxury car and inflated the insurance quote to a level I have not seen in Mexico before.
We ended up walking to another rental company and walk-in price was better than our reserved price including a GPS.

Incredible and illegal insurance scam
Cons: Edgar Cordero tried to force us to add a $93 USD insurance per day to our rental.
He claimed that it is impossible to get the car without the insurance.
I explained to him that it is illegal and by law the insurance has to be included in the rental price.
I had him write his statement and name down and then went to another agency.
Be aware of this scam and know your rights!

Cons: Did the booking ahead and when came to pick up, they didn't have a car for me. Have done another booking ahead again to get a car in the next two days, and they didn't have a car again. When they finally got a car for me, they wanted to upsell insurance although I was covered through my credit card for car rental and had a proof. When I declined to buy extra insurance (liability is included) they said that I have to leave a deposit $7000 USD, which is pretty much a cost of a new car.

Pros: I was able to negotiate the price. As is typical in Mexico, the insurance cost is way more than the car rental, but you never want to rent without insurance in Mexico.

Cons: Cancun. MX. They wanted to charge a $3000 deposit unless I bought their insurance. Then it would have been $300 deposit. I had previously called Thrifty and was told there was no insurance requirement but wasn't told about the deposit. I didn't rent the car.
Pros: Process was fairly fast and easy and it is located right at the airport.
Cons: The insurance package was ridiculous. They charged $59USD a day with a $300USD deposit for insurance. If you didnt choose that one they wanted to put a $3000USD deposit.

Good Service and economical upgrade added
Pros: Staff was friendly and offered a very inexpensive albeit off-season upgrade.
Cons: Vehicle was clean and good shape but was missing the radio antennae and the lug nut lock die. Even though I asked for both, they didn't have them. I would have had a problem if I had a flat and no music on the radio when 20 minutes outside of Cancun.
Be careful with your credit card when filling up at the Pemex at the Cancun airport. The gas attendant swapped my credit card and later made unauthorized charges. Keep your credit car in sight at all times at gas stations in Mexico.

Cons: 1. Arrived airport at our scehuled time. Waiting 90 minutes for the shuttle. Called local office several times, no answer, had local Mexicans call for me on their phone as well in case I was mis dialing . No answer. Finally paid driver of a different car rental company to drop us off at Dollar. It was only a few blocks. Office was open, no explaination for not answering phone.
2. We were only customers, 4-5 employees on site and it took 45 minutes to get car.

Pros: The car was OK and Clean, and they had a lot of cars available.
Cons: Be prepared to be surprised with hidden fees. I was in line for 1.5 hours, I had 2 sets of rentals 2 different days. And believe me, I saw about 20 customers, you wouldn't see a single customer that was happy, some walked out cursing, some like me were disappointed but didn't find any other option. So many hidden fee,s but main thing was mandatory insurance (apparently US liability is not covered there and you have to get it, which is about 36 USD per day after taxes). In my first case I ended up paying 40 USD instead of promised 5 USD, and in 2nd case 1300 USD instead of the promised 740 USD.
I hear this is every car rental in Cancun. So I don't want to bash Dollar with this; but my main problem was they didn't even care. The worst customer service. They declined connecting you to a manager or customer service. Very unfriendly and not cooperative at all. A very sad, angry environment with all upset customers.
Don't be surprised if you prepaid some insurance, they still push a lot of other insurance that you should get.
I didn't try this, but I think you better be off getting an Uber and get into the city and deal with a most friendly rental. Still possibly same price (because again the claim is this is law) but at least you pay less fees and deal with nicer people.
Cons: I chosed a small car and I selected all the insurances and you said the price was 65 dolars.
When I arrived in the office they said I had not got any insurance, and with the minimum mandatory insurance, the final price was 240 dolars.

Cons: I have no idea why they advertise these ridiculously low rates for car rentals in Mexico. Five dollars a week!! Wow!! It's a scam. When you get there, you find out you have to add on the mandatory Mexican liability insurance. They will NOT let you waive it. For me this was an extra $25 a day. I knew this was going to happen, so I wasn't mad at them, but I want others to be aware of this. The car also had lots of scratches on it but they noted that before I took it so they didn't try to gouge me for them. Plus I don't care, it's only a vacation rental, I wasn't trying to impress chicks or clients or anything.

Cons: When I reserved the car on Kayak, I was told the car was $30. I didn't see an option for purchasing insurance so I figured I would buy it onsite.
When I got there, I was told insurance was $50 a day! You can imagine my surprise and disappointment when I realized that renting a car would cost me $350 and not $30.
I felt deceived and taken advantage of. Terrible transparency.

Cons: I booked a car with Alamo for my stay in Cancun, and I got a very good quote online. Upon arrival, when I went to Alamo at the Airport to get the car, they told me that I have to pay additional 443 USD mandatory insurance for my regular size rental card for 6 days! Long wait, then a car with no gas
Pros: Car was clean, staff was friendly.
Cons: Waited for two hours (in a rather crowded area) total before I was actually driving the car. However, they gave me a car with a "quarter tank" of gas (was two bars, as soon as I drove it out of the parking lot it was only 1 bar) -- was counting on a full tank to get me to my destination, so I had to all of a sudden get money and gas. I knew about the insurance charge getting added later, so at least that wasn't a surprise to me as it was for others.
As a by-product of getting a car without a full tank, I dropped the car off with much more than a quarter tank of gas -- and naturally there is no policy in place where they refund me for *that*. Just didn't know how much driving I'd be doing at all times, so predicting exactly how much gas I'd need at the end wasn't something I had signed up for.

1) Misleading car pictured; Premium car advertized with a Mercedes picture. NONE available, not now, not anytime, that is classic bait and switch nonsense. Not unique to this location/agency, but an industry practice it seems. Still frustrating. I got a Dodge Durango - couldn't be further from a Mercedes C class.
2) Car had 78,000 km on it, and while i had no technical issues with it, obviously the interior/exterior show their age. Taking clients around in it was somewhat embarrassing.
3) It is apparently law in a some LatAm countries to have to BUY minimum insurance for liability. Why then is it so difficult to list that in the price? It's a flat rate, per day, and if you told me in advance, you'd save me the annoyance of finding out at arrival that my mandatory insurance costs 2 times the daily rate of my car, having to search on data roaming whether that is true or not, and feeling just a little bit cheated.
4) Tank was empty, had 30 miles range left when i picked up car
5) Again, seems local custom: $900 deposit for the car. Happened to me in Mexico and Costa Rica, nowhere else in the entire world. WHY? The amount certainly does not cover the cost of a lost car, or any major damage, yet they have to charge an arbitrary amount. Silly.
6) Keyless key was hidden in sunglass compartment; had me panicked after realizing 40 miles after pickup that i do not have a key. Should be left in an obvious/visible place.
7) Pickup and drop off process at all of these agencies remains stupidly inefficient. All these documents, clauses, etc. should be made available and signed in advance, saving the silly wait, and effectively forcing you to sign something without reading it, in a rush.

The car was reserved at a price of $7 a day for 11 days, not bad right? Once we got there we were forced to buy insurance which was was stated as optional online, the price went from $77 to $280.
Upon returning the price went up even further, apparently this location has some magical peso to conversion rate at 22-1, this does not work as the car was quoted in US dollars and charged in pesos based on this magical conversion rate but is converted at the discretion of the CC company, endiing price, $320 US, big difference from $77.

The rate on the car was far cheaper - $13/day than the insurance $19/day. Pros: Customer Service was excellent. The car was new and spotlessly clean and ready for us to drive away. The advertised daily rate was very competitive.
Cons: (1)There was no Enterprise desk at the airport, leaving us to stand at the curb waiting for an Enterprise van to take us to the off-campus location, despite the "on-air port premises" lead on.
(2)The unnoticed yet required insurance doubled the daily rate-an unpleasant surprise for sure.

"Mandatory" liability insurance for Mexico rental
Pros: Car was low miles and relatively clean. Cold AC.
Cons: Reserved a small car in Cancun for $20 a day with pickup at airport counter. Got to the airport, no Enterprise counter. Had to call to find out they would send a van for us. Took more than an hour. Once at remote location, was informed that I had to buy "mandatory" insurance that doubled the cost of the rental to more than $40 a day. Car was a Chevy built for the Mexico market, missing essentials that Americans are used to. No airbags, no power steering, no power brakes, no power windows, no cruise control. Window wipers were terrible and totally out of cleaning fluid. Driving that car through the Yucatán was kind of scary.
Pros: Staff was polite and professional despite our litany of complaints about their company's policies, airport pick up and drop off were smooth, car didn't break.
Cons: We booked on Kayak at a very low rate ($7/day) for a 12 day rental, which I've found is not unusual for car companies with overstock. What was not usual was the in-house insurance rates--$52/day for 90% coverage, which was then discounted to $35/day after we complained. In many years of renting insured cars I've never been charged such a disproportionate rate. Then we were informed the office was closed during our scheduled drop off time (6am), and that we'd have to pay another $30 for the drop off. Then we realized that we were being charged in pesos, with an office exchange rate of 19.5:1, which meant the dollar amounts we discussed would actually be about 6% higher on our credit card statement. The Payless office is 2 km away from the airport, so we felt stuck and went with it, but company policies are clearly designed to draw in customers with low rental prices and then add as much as possible once you're in the office.

Inadequate Pre-rental disclosures

We were not happy customers!
1. The car had almost 150,000 miles on it and was falling apart.
2. When making a reservation, we should have been advised by Kayak that liability coverage is required by the government of Mexico. The cost of liability insurance was $45 per day while the car-rental itself was only $14 per day. That means the price was quadruple the amount we were expecting to pay. The customer should also know in advance that if you decline LDW and CDW, the car rental company will pre-auth your credit card for $30,000 US.
3. When completing the pre-rental condition report, the car rental company was not forthcoming with regard to the hidden and obvious (but later discovered) damage.
4. The area where the current condition was reviewed with the customer wasn't sufficiently lit to enable us to see all the defects at night.
5. The contract stated that the gas tank was one quarter full and we did not check this at the time of the rental. Within 10 minutes after leaving the car lot, we discovered that the tank was actually empty.

Pros: The car was new and clean.
Cons: The people at the rental place claimed I put a tiny scratch on the car. The car was new but the initial inspection was at night and not thorough so there was no proof that I was responsible for the "damage." The "damage" was a speck on the fender the size of a grain of sand. They attempted to point to another mark on the car that i rubbed off easily with my finger. It was bird feces. They charged me 40 dollars.
I also spent much more on the rental than I was initially quoted.

Insurance coverage hustle
Just as most of the reviews describe, there was an attempt to hustle me into overpaying for a comprehensive insurance policy. After heading for the door, they decided to drop the price of it somewhat.
The best thing to do is make reservations with a few different companies, so if they jerk you around you can simply walk to the next company and do business.

Pros: There was a person at the airport counter
Cons: So many problems. They are 3 miles from the airport which makes a difference when they overcharge by 4+ times the price i signed up for. When I told him my Amex platinum covers the extra cost for insurance he told me to find another company (3 miles back & hour wasted). I asked him to charge me in pesos he said no. Their exchange rate over 10% the going rate. Even then total was 28 pesos higher. When I told him he was going to give me a return credit I told him don't bother Key fob didn't work and when I brought it to a different payless he wanted me to pay for a new battery (when I got mad he relented). I had to fill gas tank higher than I got it. Was told I could return it anywhere in Cancun but when I did they charged me an extra 250 pesos. There's more but I just want ro say this was the worst rental I have EVER done. Totally unacceptable.

The price of the insurance (they made us buy it, saying that we HAD to take the minimum insurance by law) made the total price for 10 days to go from $195 to $650! We did not really need a car for our vacation, but I thought that for $200 I would not have to get a cab and we could do some site seeing. Next time I will just catch a cab.

Car wasn't available and lot wasn't in the termina
Cons: We made reservations early in the morning to pick up the car in the evening. When we arrived, we were told that they didn't know if there was a car available or how much it would cost, regardless of what we had reserved online, because they wouldn't honor any reservations not made at least 48 hours in advance. Furthermore, the person at the counter couldn't tell us there were even any cars available or call the lot to find out. So, the solution we were given was to take the shuttle to the lot to find out if there was a car available and what we would be charged. Fortunately, there were numerous other competitors' counters in the terminal that were able to tell us if they had cars to rent and what they would charge us and we ended up renting from Dollar instead.

Cons: What Kayak and National fail to tell you is that there is a $20/day mandatory insurance charge. That turns the advertised rate from $5/day to $25/day.

Deceiving total cost
Pros: Automatic car with USB drives to charge smartphones
Cons: The initially quoted price from Kayak was wrong and completely deceiving. The original kayak price was $196.77 vs. $520.19 total National cost with insurance.
Kayak needs to better define the total cost to prevent the unexpected surprise especially when on vacation!

Online price did not give any indication of actual
Pros: Car was decent for purpose and clean.
Cons: Online price was quoted as 8/day for $40 total rental (seems too cheap, right?). Actual price was over $270 with required insurances. I was not surprised that I had to pay for some insurance but the increase was ridiculous and no indication was given when reserving online (and it was confusingly explained when I got there).
Would not rent from them again and probably would not reserve through Kayak.

Mexican insurance laws!
Pros: I booked for $4 usd a day, after mandatory liability insurance and the imposed 16% and 18% taxes, the car was close to 400 for 6 days!!!!!!!

Waited 2 hours for shuttle and paid 50% more than
Pros: Car was clean, and drop off was easy.
Cons: Waited 2 hours at the Cancun airport for the National Shuttle to arrive. Guy kept saying it should be here any minute. We could have walked there and back 10 times if he would have told us where it was.
When we finally got to the rental car office, they told us our quote did not include insurance that was mandatory. Even though all other rental car companies did include this in their quote.
Then, tried to give us a lower level car than what we booked for the same price. I was at least able to pull up the confirmation email to show the car level I had booked.
After all of this, we ended up losing 4 hours of our vacation and paying 50% more that expected. Totally going with Hertz next time. Saw shuttles every 5 minutes, and quoted us a lower price at the airport and assured it was with the mandatory insurance.

Cancelled my reservation
Cons: I arrived later than the time that I had booked the car for and they had given it away and had no alternatives. I had to go elsewhere and pay a lot more. My fault maybe, but they should be clearer about the policy.

Cons: The staff member who went over the contract and additional fees/charges was not clear or open about all the various charges that would be added on to our base rate.
Throughout the course of our trip, we realized that both hubcaps on the drivers side were not the right size for the wheel/tire and were attached with zip ties. While driving around on surface streets and highways, both drivers side hubcaps came off because they were not appropriately attached.

Bad experience. Would not recommend .
Pros: Pickup and drop off in cancun was quick
Cons: The key fob stopped working. This meant we couldn't use it to pick the car, or open the trunk (trunk only opened with the key fob). So every time we had to get our luggage or anything out of the trunk we had to fold the backseats forward to get items out of the trunk that way. We were told we might be charged for the Bob not working anymore since we did not call to report it right away but we were in a different country and we're not able to get through. It is extremely difficult to get through to anybody at hertz customer service. I will never use this company again. Nor would I recommend it to anybody .

Car "wasn't available," extorted for an upgrade
Pros: Car itself was okay
Cons: I arrived at the counter in Cancun with my pre-paid reservation and confirmation number. Immediately I was told that there was nothing in my class available and that I would need to pay for an upgrade at an additional $1,200 USD.
After I refused and asked for a refund for my reservation, they came down to $1000 upgrade for the same car. This was happening to everyone at this hertz location. After i refused the upgrade again, I was told I could rent a car in the original class i reserved for an additional $60/day ($360 on top of my original $230 price I reserved.) I thought they didn't have any cars in my class...?
Being that at this point there were no other options, I was forced to take the deal even though I knew I was being scammed. I'm never one to write poor reviews but I think hertz should know what is going on at their location at Cancun international airport.

Insurance & Tax Rip Off
Pros: Car was OK, Nissan Versa w/ 63000 miles. I made them take photos of the many small dings so I didn't get dinged. Tires were shot, so highway travel was bumpy. But car was clean and a/c worked.
When I arrived they said they "overbooked" and only had premium cars left, and that I would have to pay $30 more per day or wait until someone returned a regular car which could be who knows how long and that I would be behind others. Eventually they backed down.
Cons: Prepaid on TripAdvisor but then they added local insurance coverage. Said they would rent without it. So I had no choice. Then at checkout they added another $48 as tax on the insurance. So an extra $142 was padded to the weekly rental. Whatever you paid expect them to find a way to separate you from your wallet

Cons: The rental was bait and switch. That never had the car we booked and scammed us for additional insurance that cost more than the rental! We declined and walked away. Had to get a shuttle back to the airport and get a taxi. Lost over 4 hours of precious vacation time.

Dont believe in the prices.
Cons: As most car rentals, you always have the felling that someone is taking advantage of you, trying to smart you out. And this is what happens in this place. The price that it says on Kayak is not real, cause they force you to take a basic insurance that will add at least $150 to your price. This is a kayak problem as well, that should provide the final price overall, or specify which car rental requires an insurance and which doesn't.
Another problem here is that the car that they promise or even similar is not the same. For example, on my reservation I requested a VW Jetta or similar, and when I got there they gave me a Seat (you probably never heard about it) so when complained and said, ok so this is not the same, they said that they don't even have the Jetta that Kayak was showing, and the Jetta that they had was a different category ( more expensive, of course).
Horrible car, horrible experience, a lot because the car rental is sketchy and also because Kayak should provide better information to their costumers.
I would suggest go to one of the rental companies that you know and trust even if you'll have to pay a bit more, at the end it will even out, since this place hide all the other fees.

Pros: The personnel were nice and knowledgeable. We had no hassle when we dropped it off.
Cons: It was off site. They charged over two hundred dollars for insurance, but it was in Mexico. The car had minor damage throughout the vehicle before we picked it up.
Cons: The 7-seater that we had booked in Cancun was unavailable when we got to the car rental and we were offer instead an...11-seater bus that neither my wife not I could drive confidently given the size. We were told that a Chevy Suburban might be available "in a couple of hours" but the car had not yet been returned by previous client. This failed to instill much confidence and we asked our booking to be cancelled. We hope that ACE will return the c.$800 that we paid for the failed rental as they failed to honor their part of the contract. At this stage, we will not recommend ACE to any one considering that on top of the money already paid we had to add some insurance (despite our credit card insurance blanket) which would have made the cost comparable to what we paid at Hertz.

Cons: Sraff could not accept that i decline insurance (i have CDW with my credit card) on the grounds that my credit card's number does not have bulge and the manual credit card processor cannot capture the numbers. They woukd not take an electronic deposit apparently because customers can cancel it, rendering useless for the car agency.
I had to pay for basic secondary insurance so that i could use my credit card and rent the car.

They canceled our reservation after we stepped out of the office to talk on the phone and then when we went in to reclaim they said they had no more vehicles. Poor company, AVOID AVOID. The cheat you on the exchange rate
Pros: When I arrived, I was told I had to purchase their insurance, and that the insurance through the website was no good in Mexico. The rate for the rental car was $150.00, but with insurance and taxes it came $524.00! That's huge jump in price, but when I returned home, the total bill on my credit card was $604.00 because Firefly when they quoted me the bill, they did so at an exchange rate that was not real, it was actually more. I would not rent here ever again!
