While documentation needs can vary for car rental at Apia Faleolo Airport based on the company you choose, most will expect you to have a valid driver's license issued in their name from their country of residence. For customers with driver's licenses in a non-Roman alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is also necessary. The IDP will serve as a translation alongside their valid driver's license. You will most certainly need a valid credit card in the name of the renter, as most companies here will not accept debit cards or cash for a rental.
Although this airport does not offer a dedicated rental center, the terminal area still offers plenty of amenities. This will include plenty of places to do some shopping as well as several places where you can get something to eat or drink that all offer specialized options that are traditional dishes in this area. Some of the other things travelers will find in the terminal include ATMs and currency exchange, free Wi-Fi for checking on e-mails or browsing media while you wait for your car, plus there are information desks that provide assistance and answer travelers' queries.
There is no doubt that the easiest company to use here is going to be the large global brand, Avis. The reasons for this include the fact that they will not only have the largest inventory of cars, but they will have a wider selection of cars. When you combine that with a tremendous online presence to manage your booking and a larger staff than smaller and more local companies, using this brand should generally speed up your rental experience at this airport quite substantially.
The only car rental company that offers shuttle or pick-up services from Apia Faleolo airport to off-airport locations is Budget.
Pros:The people at the office in Apia were pleasant and nice to work with.
Cons:There was no Budget office at the airport. There was no shuttle or driver to meet me and take me to their office which is in Apia about 40 minutes away. I ended up paying for a taxi just to go to Apia and get my rental car that was advertised as being available for pick up at the airport. If you rent with Budget, call their Apia office directly and arrange a pickup.
