Nantucket Memorial Airport gained a little fame during the seven year run of the popular television sitcom "Wings" that featured Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Timothy Daly, Steven Weber, and Crystal Bernard. Nantucket Memorial Airport is the second busiest airport in the state of Massachusetts
Nantucket is a gorgeous island not too far from Boston that is a summer home to many rich and famous, and also is a delightful summer vacation spot for families. Located just three miles southeast of the town of Nantucket, Nantucket Memorial Airport sits on 1,200 acres of land and has three runways for air traffic. Since September 11th, the number of passengers using Nantucket Memorial Airport has decreased, but things are slowly improving. 2006 saw almost 270,000 passengers.
Directions to Nantucket Memorial Airport
Nantucket Memorial Airport is located on the south central area within the island. Due to the island's size, it really isn't hard to reach the airport. Those coming from the southeast (Polpis) will take Polpis Road south to Monomy. Take the left onto Milestone Road and follow signs to Airport Drive. Those coming from the east (Siasconset) will follow Milestone Road west heading towards Monomy, but turn left onto Old South Road and then onto Airport Drive before reaching Monomy.
Those coming from Nantucket town will take Union Street to Orange Street and then connect with Milestone road just outside of Monomy. Follow Milestone Road east and watch for airport signs (look for Old South Road and then Airport Drive).
From areas to the west (Warren Landing or Fishers Landing) take Madaket Road east to Nantucket. Eventually, Madaket Road turns into Prospect Street and then Sparks Avenue. Take Sparks Avenue to Milestone Road and head east to Old South Road. Watch for airport signs.
Main Terminal
Though Nantucket Memorial Airport is the second largest airport in Massachusetts, the airport terminal really isn't too large. People should have no problem navigating the airport. Cape Air, Colgan Air, Continental, Delta, Island Airlines, JetBlue, Nantucket Airlines, Nantucket Shuttle, and US Airways all fly to and from the airport and other airports in Boston, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, New Bedford, and New York City.
While plans are in order to renovate the airport terminal, the current terminal looks more like two large Cape style homes than an actual airport terminal. Hutch's, the airport's family restaurant, has a separate parking area for customers and has been a staple in the area for years serving meals all day long. There is a small gift shop as well.
