Top tips for hiring a car at Launceston airport

  • If you want to personalise your tour around Launceston, which is found on the outskirts of Tasmania, your best bet would be to secure a car hire at Launceston Airport before your travel date.
  • You can choose from the top six brand names in car hire at Launceston Airport. All of the agents can be found opposite the Baggage Claim area in the Arrivals building of the airport. Grab your bags and get in your car! As simple as that! When you leave the airport get onto Evandale Road. You can't miss it, it is the main road that runs past the airport and into major surrounding areas and leads directly to the city centre, which is 9.3 miles from the airport.
  • Getting from one attraction to the other can cover vast distances. Our advice to you would be to either hire an additional driver when you pre-book your hire car, alternatively look for the 'add driver' policy, which will allow you to extend your insurance cover to cover a family or friend that might share the driving. Remember both drivers’ documentation are required when collecting your Launceston Airport car hire.
  • Launceston Airport car hire agencies will verify your identity against a photograph, so you must bring along a recent photograph that is attached to a document that can prove you are who you say you are! It can be displayed either on your driver’s licence card or on your passport. It must be a recent photo of you to serve its purpose.
  • Book your car hire at Launceston airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Launceston airport

  • How important is a car with aircon for travelling in the area?

Opt for a vehicle with air conditioning as a standard feature as it can get very hot while driving those long distances. All the trusted agents inside the airport will offer air conditioned cars, you can easily filter out the cars that don't have aircon by selecting the aircon option on the KAYAK site.

  • I am an international traveller, which documents do I need for a car hire at Launceston Airport?

If you are planning on being in the country for less than three months then agents offering car hire at Launceston Airport will require you to produce your current valid overseas driver’s license on collection. Your overseas driver’s license should be in English; however, if it is not, you must be sure to obtain a translation document from your local road traffic authority. Use this document with your overseas driver’s license to secure your hire car.

  • Am I required to prove a place of residence when collecting my rental car?

This part is very important for agents operating in the airport. Some driving licences don't indicate an address at all, and others might have expired due to moving around and not updating the details. If this is the case you will not be allowed to collect the car. Make sure you have a current utility bill or authorised bank statement that does display your proof of address.

  • Where can I find the car hire agents in the airport?

You will arrive on the second floor of the airport, in the Arrivals hall. You will need to head to the ground level of the airport. On the ground level, you will need to exit the passenger terminal and turn left. There you will see a designated hall with help desks for each rental agent available at the airport. Directly outside the hall, there is access to the road shuttle service, which will take you to the relevant parking lot. The hall is also attached to the disabled parking hall. Both the car rental and disabled parking lots can only be exited via the main entrance and exit to the airport. After the roundabout, you can turn left to head the Evandale or right to head to Launceston.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Launceston airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Launceston airport to off-airport locations include Alamo, Avis, Bargain Car Rentals, Budget, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Europcar, Hertz, keddy by Europcar, National, and Sixt.

It was really great. Smooth pick-up and drop off. The even upgraded our car from a hybrid Suv to a new 7-seater hybrid, as they have no Hybrid suv available at the time of our pick-up.

Having elected airport pickup and drop off I expected just that. The bus collection system was ok but a little inconvenient. The return was impossible because flight was at 6 and returns were not open at that time. Their solution was that I return the previous day before 5pm. So it cost me inconvenience and two taxi trips. Apex said they are Avis and budget begging the question why we could not drop at the airport in the am. Will avoid in future. Regards Rob

The picking up process needs refinement, it took far to long. The forms should be filled out online, beforehand, as this would expedite the process for everyone.
