Top tips for hiring a car at Durban King Shaka Intl airport

  • Car hire at Durban King Shaka International Airport (DUR) provides an opportunity to explore one of the most visited cities in South Africa on your own steam. Public transport in the city can be difficult to navigate and is subject to lengthy delays, while local taxis tend to overcharge. Rideshare apps are popular but aren't suitable for longer trips. If you want to explore the full coastline and surrounding areas, picking up a Durban King Shaka International Airport car hire is an ideal way to do that.
  • Returns of car hire at Durban King Shaka International Airport will be at the same parking garage where you picked the vehicle up. As you approach the airport, take note of the signs directing you towards the car hire centre and follow them. As you turn off Mdloti Street into Sugar Cane Road, the signposts will be on your left. Make a turn at the signage for the car company you hired your vehicle from and follow the road. These car hire companies have longer operating hours, so there should be someone there. If there isn't, you'll find a deposit box to place the keys in.
  • Most companies offering car hire at Durban King Shaka International Airport have several locations throughout the city and the surrounding coastal cities. If you're planning on travelling to other parts of South Africa and aren't leaving from King Shaka Airport, most of the companies at the airport can arrange for a different drop-off point, with a possible additional cost. Make sure you prearrange this to avoid any surprises.
  • There aren't any times that are particularly difficult to hire a car when collecting from the airport, but if you're planning on driving into the city, try to avoid peak traffic hours, as traffic can crawl to a stop on the main highway between the airport and the city. The busier times tend to be from 07:00 to 08:30 and then 17:30 to 19:00 during the week.
  • Book your car hire at Durban King Shaka Intl airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Durban King Shaka Intl airport

  • What are the requirements to hire a car at the airport?

The legal driving age in South Africa is 18 years old, though most car hire companies require you to be at least 21 and have held your licence for at least a year. If you have an Australian driving licence, it’s advised you bring an international driving licence as well. Bear in mind that if you're younger than 25 years old, some car hire companies will add a young driver surcharge on top of the standard cost. Hire agencies will require a valid ID document, usually a passport, and a valid credit card in your name. If your booking was paid for online, the credit card used and the owner of it must be present when picking up the car. You will not be able to use the credit card of someone who isn't present.

  • Where will I find car hire at Durban Airport?

There is a wide range of car hire companies operating from King Shaka International Airport, and they're all located in the car hire centre outside. Once you've made your way through the luggage claim and headed into the arrivals hall, you'll need to make your way outside to the P4 pick-up parking area. Walk into the P4 area and turn right. The dedicated car hire parking area is located behind Intercontinental Hotel. This is where you'll fill out the forms with the company you choose, inspect the car and be given the keys.

  • What amenities does the car hire centre have?

The car hire centre at the airport is home to basic amenities like toilets and a waiting area. Most of the main amenities are located inside the airport terminal. If you need to grab a bite to eat or exchange or withdraw money, you'll want to do this inside the airport before leaving.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Durban King Shaka Intl airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Durban King Shaka Intl airport to off-airport locations include Avis, Bidvest, Dollar, Europcar, Firefly, First Car, Hertz, keddy by Europcar, Sixt, and Tempest Car Hire.

Contract should stipulate that the e-toll cost will be for customer’s account just for clarity. Otherwise a good deal and no problems at all. Well done to Tempest and Europcar through whom it was hired. Thank you!
