Make sure it’s the size you will need

A rental car is by far the best and most comfortable way to explore not only Shannon, but also other big destinations in western Ireland. Public transportation often doesn’t take you to some of the region’s best landscapes and tours can be pricey. Galway makes for a great road trip if you’re based in Shannon, as it’s about 55 miles from the city. The majestic Cliffs of Moher, also on the west coast, are about an hour’s drive from Shannon.
All the big car rental agencies, including Avis, Budget, and Hertz, can be found at Shannon Airport (SNN), which is less than four miles away from the city center. The car rental desks can be found at the Arrivals Hall of the airport’s main terminal, and the rental cars will be located just outside the building. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required when renting a vehicle in Ireland.
When driving in Ireland, remember that traffic drives on the left side, and the steering wheel is located on the right side of the car. Although regional roads are usually somewhat narrow, they are well-maintained -- as are the motorways. The roads around Shannon Airport are some of the best for people driving on the left-hand side of the road for the first time; just be extra alert when entering and exiting roundabouts.
Although traffic in Shannon itself is very manageable, there is some congestion around the airport, particularly during rush hour. Avoid driving between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and then again between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. so you don’t add unnecessary extra time to your journeys. If you have to be at the airport within those time frames, plan your trip accordingly. If you’re heading to Galway, remember there are lots more people on the roads on the weekend.

The car was clean and pick up and drop off were very easy. However I never received an invoice/contract for the rental. This has led to confusion over how much I paid and what I was paying for. I would have loved to have seen a breakdown of what I was paying for.

Budget has definitely become more budget over the years. My “upgraded” car was not Apple CarPlay equipped (1st time in years of renting that I’ve seen this). Wasn’t explained to me so of course I didn’t opt for gps feature. Turned into a bit of a mess as I was trying to navigate off my phone. Check in was quick, but not helpful in any meaningful was. Car was rather beat up. Scratches/dents/intetior all showing age. Drop off was supreme. I’ll give them that.

Pick up was extremely slow. Other companies served 2 customers to Sixt one. The problem seemed to be regarding insurance provided by credit card companies. I used a Chase issued card and was told that I must contact Chase and have them email a letter to confirm that they would provide coverage. I had never experienced anything like this and had to spend time on vacation dealing with it from Another country. They should make it clear at the time of reservations that this is necessary!

Returning the car was great - the rep was very helpful. And the car worked well. However, when picking up the car, we were hit with an unexpected 10 euro per day charge since I was providing my own insurance. At no point was this charged identified or explained during my booking on Kayak. This doubled the price of the rental. The rep when we picked up the car said the charge was mandatory. I felt swindled since this was a total surprise.
