  • Renting a car for your time in Santo Domingo is definitely a good choice, as public transport is unreliable and often takes twice as long as going by car. Taxis can be very expensive and, unless you want to employ one of the carros pùblicos, which are taxis where various people are crammed in and dropped off one by one at their destination, a car is your best option.
  • Start your journey hassle-free and rent a car directly from the airport grounds of Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ). Located in the north terminal, there are various agencies who offer vehicles for all tastes. The airport is over 19 miles from the city center and public transport is not available directly from the airport, so driving by car is your best choice. Via the scenic coastline Autopista Las Americas, travelers will be in Santo Domingo’s center in about half an hour.
  • Most street signs in Santo Domingo are only stated in Spanish, so, unless you speak the language, it is advised to rent a GPS system with your rental car and also map out your journeys beforehand. Pedestrians are known to simply cross the road without looking, so drive defensively and attentively and always double-check before turning a corner or entering an intersection. Due to badly lit streets and cars driving without headlights, it is also not recommended to drive at night.
  • Santo Domingo’s traffic can be challenging to navigate in the increased peak times of around 7:30-9:30am and 5-7pm, as many commuters clog up the streets. WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE. Our flight was delayed and we arrived a few hours later than the pickup time at the AVIS counter at the airport. They just CANCELLED our reservation and offered us another car for three times the original price that was written in our contract. They had all our flight informations and were supposed to know about potential delays but they just ‘didn't check’… We had to rent another car, last minute, with another company for 50% more money and got a small city car instead of a (much needed for our trip) SUV. Again, WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE!

The staff were friendly, and the car was in good condition. However my rental was supposed to be $83.98 with the $300 deposit that was blocked on my card to be released on return of the car. The $300 is still out of my account nearly two weeks later. It has cost me $400 for renting a car for a few hours.

Despite making a reservation months in advance, I was told no car was available at the time of my reservation and was directed to wait over 3 hours for a car. The cost of the reservation online was about $500, but I was told at the counter the actual total cost would be about $900. Unacceptable business practices. I gave my business to a different rental car company for the entirety of my stay. I also watched a number of other people make the switch from Hertz to the other rental car company due to the same issues. Hertz lost plenty of business that day due to poor business practices and service.

Bad experience with my car and the agent lack of communication and knowledge. Was informed that the car was full and did not notice it was half of a tank. I will never again pay so much money and rent with Alamo car rental.

The drop off was extremely easy and the staff very professional. I was very happy with the taxi offer.

Cons:

I was a bit surprised by the additional $500 deposit at the pickup location. The deposit was almost 250% more than the cost of the rental car itself - which only totaled $201. It would have been a little more comforting to know that this extra amount was required prior to arriving at the location. Knowing at booking allows for precise budgeting for the trip.

The man at the counter at Europ Car forced me to take out insurance. I told him several times that I didn't want to take out insurance. He insisted on that. He said it was mandatory in the Dominican Republic. He wanted another $800. The cheaper option is $500. But that was more than I paid for the vehicle. When I wanted to leave after more than an hour, he talked me into taking out a minimum insurance policy of $350. Because I was unsure and wanted to leave quickly, I reluctantly agreed. A very bad experience.

I reserved a mid-size sedan but they gave ma sub-compact. ThenEurocar forced me to buy their CDW insurance, an expense that was not clearly stated when I made my online reservation and doubled the stated price, and then they told me I had damaged the car and wanted more money, but finally agreed to no extra charges

Please be clear on the exact office and location of the car pick up place in the airport location we have to address, seams no one knew where we should go with the rental display mail confirmation

Pros:

The car was nice and comfortable.

Cons:

Upon our arrival we had to wait about an hour to be seen. The only person working was handling two transactions, a return and a rental. The car was given dirty on the outside so the scratches were hard to see. We didn’t realize the windshield had a crack in it until a few days later. Luckily I took a video of the car so we didn’t end up being liable for the damage. When we took the car back they said not to worry about it because I had the video. Once there, they told us the temp tags were expired, mind you we picked up the car on 5/2 and it expired 5/3. Why would they give a car with temp tags about to expire the following day? Our car rental was for 20 days. They said they kept trying to call us, I asked to what number and they said your US number, why would they call our US number when we’re in a different county. There was no excuse because they had all of our local information. They said someone would be by the following day to take the new temp plates. We waiting all day, no one showed up and no one even bothered to call. We tried calling them all day even to their emergency number and no one responded. How reassuring is that if we did have some sort of vehicle emergency and we couldn’t reach someone on their emergency number. Not until 2 days later after we kept calling that someone actually picked up and said someone would be by within the hour. We asked for a credit for the inconvenience and all they said was that the card had already been charged and that they couldn’t issue a credit. I work for a University and I handle payments, partial refunds can be issued if they wanted to. It was the most annoying experience ever. Wasted time and days waiting around so that we wouldn’t be stopped by the cops for expired temp plates. When we went to return the car the day we were leaving at 7:00am apparently they didn’t open until 8:00am. How do you have a car rental company where you don’t have someone on site 24 hours a day? After waiting a while a person finally showed up. Then he weren’t the one to process the lift of the $3,000 hold it was another person who wouldn’t be there until about an hour later. Considering our flight was at 10:00am we couldn’t wait around.

Pros:

Had to pay for DR insurance as opposed to the insurance I already paid for. If I used the 3rd party, they were going to put a hold of $1500 on my card. I didn’t want to later on them charge my card for those $1500 so I used their insurance so I paid another $100 plus a hold of $200 then I did when I booked.

Terrible. We waited over 1.5 hour at the airport before being picked up. The first car we got was in pretty bad shape and 2 hours after getting it the car wouldn’t turn on. They brought us a new car. I specifically asked that we have a 4WD and the guy assured me it was. However on our trip we got stuck half-way up a mountain because the car was in fact not a 4WD so we couldn’t do several activities or restaurants because we couldn’t reach their location.
