Santiago, Chile has a lot to offer, from the Museo Interactivo Mirador to the Fantasilandia Amusement Park, and many other wonderful parks dotted around. The most convenient and flexible way to see all the major attractions is by renting a car for your stay to make sure you see everything according on your own terms. Don’t waste time and energy with public transport and expensive cabs, but get your own wheels and make the most of your visit.
Santiago’s International Airport is about 11 miles from Santiago center, so it is a great way to start the trip by picking up a car directly at the airport’s rental car desks. Follow the signs upon arrival to the car center and choose from various companies, including Alamo, Europcar, and Sixt. The fastest way into Santiago is via the Costanera Norte (to the Plaza de Armas).
Santiago is a big metropolitan city and, therefore, can have lots of traffic, so patience is definitely a must when driving in the city. Having said that, it is much easier to find an alternative route with a car than being stuck in traffic with a bus where travelers are dependent on the route the bus has to follow. Pickup and dropoff at the rental location was quick however we did have to wait 30± mins to get the van from the airport to take us to the off-site lot. I was given a Hyundai accent as an intermediate vehicle. I would normally consider this compact class but they insisted it was correct. I'm not sure who was right but it was smaller than I anticipated.

The process to check out the car took too much time. I was able to show them my prepurchased insurance through Kayak. No problems there. I change the reservation from the airport to the hotel. No problem there with increased charges. They meet you at the airport to pick you up with a sign. They used my What’s app app to contact me. Don’t disregard that. There is a person watching the app to respond. They upgraded us for the inconvenience. Person at the desk spoke English well. Nice new, maintained car. Streets in Chile are very good and cell tower will run quickly keep you informed on your maps apps. I would rent a car in Chile again.

Met at airport by a Hertz employee with a sign and brought to the offsite location via a third party shuttle. They had a problem with their system and weren't able to enter my Hertz Gold # so had to give all. All worked, great car, kind staff but between shuttle and info, took >45min to get on the road.

The address is correct but had to call to understand that they are located on a -1 level inside a parking lot (not mentioned anywhere). They also asked me for my passport which I didn’t have with me, had my id and my driver’s license but not my passport.

The place did not exist. There was no one to call, including Kayak rep. Could not even cancel. Ended up paying $100 for insurance of thin air. It was a scam, and so is Kayak.

The young woman who checked us in was so helpful and nice. A bit of translation difficulty but that's often the case of English speaking in Chile! When returning, we showed up as she was closing, she helped us as we had gone into the wrong parking garage...a truck blocked the view of the other entrance just beyond the one we needed. She and another employee, a young man, helped us with bags and getting back to the street...my fellow traveler is partly handicapped. They were so kind and spent a lot of extra time helping find a taxi and make sure we were safely on our way. Much appreciation to those two young people who were so kind.

I had a really bad experience. They gave me an old car with a lot of damage, which was dirty inside and outside. It smelled like gas inside the car all the time, and the front desk staff were rude and unprofessional. When I rented the car, they told me to pick it up at one address, but once I got there, they told me to go to another location. I had to pay for two Ubers just to get the car. I also had to return the car one day early, but they didn’t want to refund me for the extra day. They didn’t explain the contract to me. I had to leave $1,000 as a deposit because she wasn’t able to verify if I had the insurance that I purchased through Ace Rental Car, even though I showed her the receipt and emails. Really bad service.

I was not informed that in the town where I was to pick up the car there is no such thing as Ace car rental. I spent 2 frustrating hours in the airport in puerto Montt before figuring out that Ace is Known by another name. 😠

The employees were helpful, however. the quality of the vehicle was "bad". After driving for 150 kilometers in Chile, the car started to have motor noises. The next day I took the car to an agent at my destination city (Talca). They did not explain the noises and I received a new vehicle. This vehicle did not have any problems. When I return the vehicle at the airport, I was charged for a crack in the windshield. Alamo employee informed me that after a phone call to the alamo agent in Talca, He was informed that no crack was on the windshield when I received the vehicle in Talca. I did not inspect the second vehicle, I cannot confirm the statement from Alamo in Talca, however, when I originally picked up the vehicle at the airport, I was informed that the vehicle was in "excellent" condition. This was not true. How do I know the condition of the second car, after the "excellent" previous condition.

They charged me extra because they didn’t have the car I requested (needed automatic transmission) and would not price match - ended up paying a ridiculous amount for 3 days. Got a notification that there was an AirTag tracking us and found one right in the glove compartment. Overall not a good experience.

Good: The front desk staff helped as I picked up the car a day later than was previously scheduled. They were very helpful but it took a very long time. Bad: I returned the car after being on the coast. At the end of the drive back, the car had some residual sand/dust on it. The guy who checked in the car charged me $30,000 CLP for "cleanup". It was unjustified in my opinion.

I was charged for a car wash. The car was dusty when returned but nothing out of the ordinary. When renting it was not easy to discover that the road tolls outside of Santiago were not included and that there was a 25% markup on the automatically read tolls. There was also an unexpected admin charge. So the daily rate for the car was artificially low. The car was new and quite luxurious for the class, opel Corsa, but the clutch was iffy even though the car had only 13000 kms on it.

Everything was ok, until our rental broke down due to electrical problem and stopped on a busy street. We waited for more than 3 hours for the tow truck to take the car and another 2 hours+ plus call back to the USA for the replacement car due to language problem. We ended up not pick up the replacement because it’s on the other side of the town and op for refund. In all fairness the local car rental company do whatever in their power to smooth down the situation but not effective.
