They don’t actually have cars in their lots. They didn’t honor our request because they didn’t have a car, but upon spending the afternoon there trying to find a solution I found out they never have cars there, and usually deliver with delays or can’t deliver the car on the reservation and while hike the prices up to give an “upgrade”.

The price charged was much higher than the price given when reserved. There is a mandatory insurance charge that if mandatory should be included in the price quoted. I have rental insurance provided by my credit card but still was made to pay this fee and it was not included in the quote. They also provided a beat up older car and would not provide a quality car after being told the condition of the car was not acceptable. After we drove off we realized the AC didn’t work and it was very hot so had to spend time to take the car back. Then they wanted me to go to another location to pick up a different car wasting even more of my vacation time on an already drawn out rental process. They also did not offer a mileage included option which they know from pickup and drop off distance will add another hefty charge at the end, in addition to the extra charges for dropping off at a different location and for returning to an airport which was at their insistence not our need and yet there is another additional charge for dropping off at the airport. The people are also very rude and don’t seem to care at all about providing good customer service or an acceptable rental car that is not all banged up, old and dies not work correctly. We got much better service and deal at the Localiza car rental in Quito.

So expensive and the price on internet is a lie , I really have a bad experience, almost 400 dollars for 4 days for an old little car . Never will come back with them .

Check out took over an hour because the list the reservation. The car was old and in very bad shape. The windshield wipers were useless, only a few controls worked. The suspension was shot. The lights were not aimed correctly and were so dim that they were useless. When turning (like a U) the steering shook, clunked, and there was griinding. The brakes were good. The radio worked ok but it was so worn that all the markings were gone so you had to just push buttons to find what you wanted. It was clear the car had be wrecked and repainted (and not well). I called the same day to try to replace this very UNSAFE car but they refused. I had to pay for taxis because the rental car was NOT safe to drive. I tried for three days. Finally I just ran out of time, had to book a flight to get back home, and pay to have the car towed back. Also they don't tell you this but you are forced to pay for THEIR insurance regardless of whether or not you carry your own or they "hold" $7000! Even with all that they still force you to pay a $1000 "deposit". So to recap, do NOT use this company, not only are they a complete rip off but you take your life in your hands with the UNSAFE car and they will NOT help if there are any issues. You are just on your own. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!

Total bait and switch scenario and outright cheats and liars. They didn’t have our car available and said come the next day. When we complied the next morning they told us since we didn’t pick up the car, our reservation was not valid and we had to pay off the street rates. When presented with the prepaid reservation and evidence of the attempted pickup the night before, they still tried to charge a late fee. Then all the add on charges came one after another. We argued for over an hour to get the agreed prepaid pricing. Then they still didn’t have the car we reserved. We waited 3 hours and were forced to take one in manual despite reserving an automatic. With help of local Ecuadorian friends, a day later and 2 days after the original reservation date an automatic car was finally delivered. We were told the fee for differed drop/pick points would be waived for our inconvenience. However at drop they not only charged us a fee but also claimed damage we didn’t cause and had different photo images taken before than after but not the same areas of the car offered as “proof” and I’m now battling it out with my credit card company as I paid for their insurance but somehow my $455 prepaid car rental resulted in an over $2000 bill! It was parked in a private, guarded and in building garage at a private residence. This has been the worst experience ever! I totally feel like they saw a white gringa and dollar signs and did all they could to try and take advantage of me. So disappointing. Supervisors and managers have been of no assistance. Awful experience start to finish and will never rent from them again and suggest you don’t either!

N/AI did not rent from them. I reserved through Kayak but when I showed up they would not recognize the car insurance that I carry through my credit card. They did not disclose that the mandatory insurance practically doubles the price of the booking. It would have been an additional $245 on top of the car rental and they would not back down. Total scam! My credit card insurance has been recognized all over the world in other rentals and I have over $20K limit available on that card in case of damages. They thought they had me over the barrel but luckily I've lived in town for a bit and was able to ask around and snag a rental from a private company for HALF the cost — all insurance and car seats included. I will never recommend Europcar to anyone because I feel that it's completely dishonest to charge MANDATORY insurance and not disclose that at time of booking.

Car booked was not available (actually turned out was never at that location- was being used as a shuttle vehicle for the employee at the airport Car was poorly maintained (engine check light on, intermittent fault with remote locking key fob that set the alarm off). No one at the “24 hour” drop off location at airport so had to get security guard to phone someone. They pushed extra insurance on us despite us having adequate preexisting coverage

Car broken and perfect service.I liked two things about Avis 1) Originally I booked car via Rentalcars.com. They had confirmed my booking and 1 day before pick up they cancelled it without even sending me email or letting me know! I chat with their support and they said: Sorry, we cannot help you. WTF?! So I had to arrange everything after arrival - at Avis counter there was very nice guy with fluent English that helped us a lot finding a good deal that would be similar to original booking. Thanks again Mr. Francisco P.! Great help! 2) Our car got some engine issue by the end of our trip in the middle of the national park. Avis call center was helpful and they brought us new (much bigger car) in several ours with no question or extra charge. So: Avis rulez - I will use it again next time Rentalcars.com sucks - never more

Bait and switchNothing about this experience to likeAvis does not honor rentals done through Kayak. Avis don't recognize the car size that Kayak gave me or the insurance I signed up for through Kayak. I ended up spending almost 3 times the amount that quoted through Kayak. I will never do business with neither Avis nor Kayak again. The burrito with a competitive market place is that I choices. I will do what I can to spread the word so other people don't need to experience the same

Extorted for car price when we landed in QuitoThe SUV was clean and comfortable. We had reserved a car for $197.43 and few months prior to the trip and had received an email confirmation two days prior to our trip, however when we landed in Quito we were told at the counter that the price of our car was in fact over $1,300. It was too late to change our plans and book a flight instead of drive, thus we we forced to rent the car for only a few days for around $600 and then figure out public transportation for the rest of our trip.

4.4 Okay9 Dec 2018
Dissappointed.See dislikes.Where do I start? Of all the available rental companies, I chose Enterprise for its brand recognition because i understand that you get what you pay for. In this case, paying top dollar did me no good. First, I reserved an automatic transmission SUV. They did not have an automatic vehicle nor an SUV available. All they had was one manual pick up truck. I haven’t driven stickshift in nearly a decade, let alone in a mountainous region. That made me very nervous during our road trip from Quito to Guayaquil and the three cities between. Second, I wanted an SUV to keep my surfboard bag inside the vehicle for security purposes as well as shielding it from the rain. So now at every stop we made, I had to take a drenched surfboard coffin and put it inside the vehicle which created a moldy smelling bag and musty scented truck cab. Next, the vehicle had no windshield wiper fluid. Imagine driving at night around winding roads along mountains with cliffs that drop off well over 300 yards and trying to clean the windshield covered in dust/dirt/debris mixed with rain; not a pleasant experience as using the wipers merely blurred our vision. Lastly, I paid an extra $90 for the week for a GPS device. One would expect that this device would be updated...clearly my expectations were too high for a simple task. We tried routing to commonly visited locations like Baños but the GPS had no idea how to get us there. I am extremely disappointed that our HONEYMOON adventure was hindered by this rental experience as we genuinely had concerns for our safety, security and well being.

HERTZ is by far the Worst & Most Pathetic Customer Service. From the begging of the rental, it was a disaster. Two hours into the trip the AC went out in he car. I called their support number only to be made to wait 2 hours so they could send a guy without tools to put his hand infront of the vent and confirm that the AC did not work. Then to be told they dis not have another car to give me. When I finally arrived at Guayaquil (where they had another car for me 240 miles away) the people at the counter had left more than 10 minutes early and forced me to lose an extra day. But the best part was the way Ivan Quillupangi (fleet manager), tried blaming me for scratches on a car that were marked on the paperwork pre-rental and for three tire blow outs due to low air pressure (that was also marked on the paperwork). Not only that but questioning why I changed out the tires intead of calling, even after I advised that the tires blew in an area with no reception at 11:00pm on the side of a mountain. I liked the way that when I told them the brakes in the car were pulsating the response from them was that it was impossible because they had just changed them; however, they left the old brake rotors that were warped and caused the pulsating and lack of stopping power. I liked that once I got back to their Guayaquil office and showed them all this they said that although they can see what I am telling them, the guy on the phone 250 miles away that can't see says different that the proof of pictures, paperwork and items present. When I claimed the scratches were on the paperwork, they said that it was a "misprint" when I showed them the warpage on he brake rotors they pretended not to understand telling me the brakes had been changed. when speak My if the tires they said well you could have hit something and when I asked them to show me what exactly makes them say that or to show me on the tire or rim any impact point, they simply shrugged and said that that is what the guy from Quito (who'd never seen me or the car) said. Last but not least they expected me to provide good customer service by taking the car to and from the airport for inspections. Lastly when I got to the airport they did not have a comparable vehicle for me (7 passenger SUV) and merely had a compact, and expected me to provide a new deposit (after having given $2,400.00 on the current car). In short I was left at the airport stranded without a car. To add insult to injury Hertz ecuador has nothing to do with Hertz US. Car broke down in 20 minutes of pick up and ridiculed in spanishNothingEverything was horrible. Service, the quality of cars were miserable. the first car that I got broke down within 20 minutes in the middle of the highway and the replacement refused to go above 40 km/hr. The customer care giggled throughout my panic stricken phone call when the car broke down in the middle lane of a highway when cars were moving at 90km/hr. The engine started emitting smoke. The local agency officials giggled and ridiculed me, in Spanish language assuming that I do not understand anything, for being a women driver. I had to ask them to stop and remind them that I do understand the language even if I do not speak it. Then the giggling and smiling stopped. They refused to return the car before the contract was up. But I could not drive the car cause it was in such a bad condition. They have sexists employees who spent more time making fun of me than trying to solve the problem. I had to leave the car at the location without any written acknowledgement for the return and file an official complain with both Thrifty and better business bureau to get my money back including the deposit which should have been returned with the car. I finally went to Avis who gave me a car in a perfect condition which could easily be driven even in mountainous roads.

Thrifty at Quito airport is a rip off!!The size of the Chevy Spark makes it very easy to park. The insurance price was double the price of the car. That and I already have car insurance, Geico, that covers my driving in other countries. I did not want the Thrifty Insurance but the agent would not negotiate. Said that I had to take Thrifty's. The 100k per day mileage limit is ridiculous. I ended up driving 660km in five days so they charged me an extra $40, 25 cents a km, such a rip off. Also the car they gave me, Chevy Spark, was terribly on hills. Almost had two different accidents sliding downhill. My advice rent an automatic in Quito from a more reputable rental agent like Hertz.

Worst car rental ever!!!1) There was no address for the various Thrifty agencies in Quito on the rental agreement, we couldn't get in touch with anyone, so we spent an hour and lots of taxi dollars trying to find an office. Then, 2) when we finally found one, they said, "Oh, the $72 you paid Kayak for insurance is INTERNATIONAL insurance, which we don't accept (here in Ecuador, presumably), so we had to pay of new insurance to the tune of $150 or so. 3) Then, to top it all off, they said we could only drive 800 kilometers in eight days, or we'd have to pay 25 cents a kilometer above that. A terrible experience.

The option to hire meant insurance doubled the cost and even then the wheels, tyres, suspension and exhaust were not covered. This felt like theft. Driving on poor roads when there are places where even major roads have pot holes 50cm deep and reach many hundreds of metres long and all the way across the road and the insurance is rigged against you is theft. I will never use Sixt again however pleasant the staff who were charming

I have rented a car once before with Sixt in California, and everything went smoothly. Not so this time. I made a reservation for a car in Quito, Ecuador. Within a couple minutes of making the reservation (not before), Sixt let me know about a mileage limit, which turned out wouldn't be enough for the trip I wanted to make. I tried calling Sixt locally in Ecuador, internationally at their 888 number, as well as tried to cancel the reservation through the booking agent. None of it was successful: Sixt never answered the phone locally; the international number would not connect me to an agent (the call dropped 3 times before I gave up), and after an hour messaging with Priceline / Kayak, neither was able to resolve the issue. I eventually opened a dispute with my credit card company, which has temporarily refunded me the reservation money, but the official dispute can take months to resolve, and I don't know what the final verdict will be. Overall, I'm extremely disappointed with Sixt this time around.

Top tips for hiring a car in Quito

  • Ecuador has made a considerable improvement to several of its major highways, adding more lanes to make roads safer and easier to travel. Although there are other options for getting around Quito, your car rentals in Quito will not only give you more flexibility but will also give you the chance to explore cities and towns along the Ecuadoran coast, like Cuenca 7h away, the waterfalls in Banos 3h away, the forests in Tena, or Papallact also 3h away.

Things to keep in mind are that stop signs aren’t always respected, unless there is oncoming traffic. Don’t be surprised that drivers frequently use their horns and hazard lights. When approaching a traffic circle, yield to the traffic already in the traffic circle. Keep your eyes open for cars stopping or moving and also pedestrians, as jaywalking is common throughout the city. International navigation apps will help find our way around the city.

This means that during the heaviest rush hour times from 6:30am to 8am and 3pm to 7:30pm, cars ending in a certain license plate number are prohibited from circulating. Be sure to check which day your car rental is not supposed to drive and plan accordingly to avoid a fine. Quito is also susceptible to heavy fog, mist, and rain, which can block visibility. Be sure to use the appropriate headlights and drive slowly.
