Pros: The car we received was a perfect size. I love the gas mileage it got. We didn't have to spend a great deal of money on gas and time stopping to get gas. Helpful people at the airport and at the place we actually got the car from.
Cons: We did not know that the car rental place was not at the airport and there was not a shuttle to the place we had to pick up our car. That was a big shocker. The young lady at the airport called the place that we rented the car from and we were well taken care of. The car windows were so dirty that we couldn't see out of them at night. We had asked the guy who cleans the car to clean them again but even his second round of cleaning was terrible. He acted as if we were putting him out.

Tire pressure
Cons: Low tire pressure alarm sounded on the second day of our rental. I checked the air pressure in all four tires - over 50 psi in three tires and less than 25 in the fourth. Obviously, this is a safety issue that could have resulted in a blow out. Avis' staff should perform simple checks like this (also oil and other fluids) as a part of their prep.

Pros: Car was good. No hassle picking up
Cons: Return. There were three staff members visible around the counter all of whom were talking to someone on cellphones. I had to wait 15 minutes before one young lady was kind enough to talk to me

Cons: I had reserved a small or compact car (I hate driving large vehicles on unfamiliar roads). They offered me an F150 (large pickup) or a van! They were good enough to at least get me a large SUV, which was less of a pain but far from what I had reserved.

Pros: The staff at Ronald Reagan Airport was extremely helpful, and Ms. Benita's customer service skills are excellent.
Cons: The car we reserved and expected to drive in Newport News was unavailable and we had to drive to DC to get one that would work for us, which was very frustrating and time consuming.

bait and switch
Pros: Nothing.
Cons: From the start this was the worst car rental experience I've ever had. I got to the budget counter and they swiped my card. They immediately told me they wouldn't rent me a car because my credit wouldn't allow it. I never gave them permission to run my credit. Next they told me they could get me a car from avis. It was the same car they just changed the rental jacket from budget to avis and charged me $20 more. Once I got the car it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever driven. That's not their fault it's Volkswagen to blame for that. They never asked me what car I wanted and forced me to pay more than the price I booked based on some phantom credit check they claim they did. I do not blame Kayak for this I blame the guilty patty which is Budget/Avis car rental.

Pros: Car was roomy, great on gas
Cons: No help finding car in parking garage. Person at counter was helpful on my reservation but couldn't find the car and wasted time walking around. Once I got to car had to google how to start it. Was push start I had no idea I had to have my foot on break to start it until I googled it

Cons: I had a very long wait in line (there were only two people ahead of me). The man who processed my pickup was extremely unfriendly. He offered me additional insurance and waivers. When I politely declined, he treated me as if I was ignorant while using scare tactics to get me to buy them (I'd already verified my coverage with my insurance and said as much). He then handed me my paperwork and asked me to initial in 4 different places. Apparently he assumed I wasn't going to read the paperwork - he'd overcharged me by $11. When I asked why their was a difference between my quote amount via Expedia and his amount he said he didn't know and didn't offer to look at the bill. When I continued to read he acted irritated and took the paper. He looked over it and then changed something on the computer. He said he'd put me in a different car (he didn't because he'd already gotten the keys and didn't swap the keys). He offered no other explanantion and asked me to sign again. There was no thank you or have a nice day.

21 Feb 2019
Pros: The gentleman that assisted me with exchanging a vehicle I was given was very kind and helpful.
Cons: When I picked up the initial rental it had a flat tire, after I put air in the tire the flat tire indicator did not go off so I went back to exchange it for another vehicle. It would be more helpful if the vehicles are inspected prior to being issued to potential renters.

Cons: The original pricyfor rental of a small suv for 3 days was $126.00, with bumper to bumper coverage was an $35 a day ( full comprehensive was $72 a day), oh and would you like road side assistance coverage ($10 per day) ripped off $273 for 3 days!

Pros: The Budget rental itself was fine.
Cons: Misleading sign-up. Said I would not have to pay until at the rental car counter. But charged $12 immediately for Allianz, although it said $9. Thought it was for accident protection but it was for cancelation insurance or something. Will never use Kayak again for rental cars.

Pros: Staff was nice
Cons: They didn’t have convertible that I booked. I had planned it use as a photo prop with several different parties and had change everything. Not sure who’s at fault but taking 3 hours on a Saturday to go get the car only to find out less than 4 hours prior to the plans that it was not there!

Top tips for renting a car in Newport News

  • It is highly recommended that visitors rent a car during their time in Newport News, as that really is the only way to get around the city. Public transportation is quite lacking and only offers limited service during evenings and on weekends. For instance, if you want to visit Sandy Bottom Nature Park, it is just a 10-minute drive of 4.7 miles. On the bus, however, it can take upwards of 30 minutes.
  • If you are like most arrivals landing at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, then you are likely planning on picking up a rental car there. For such travelers, you can find the rental car desks located in the baggage claim area.
  • Due to the suburban nature of Newport News, pedestrians are very common throughout the city. As a result, jaywalking is also a normal occurrence and drivers should keep their eyes open for any unexpected street crossers. Jaywalking occurs most often on Newport News’ smaller streets and in residential areas.
  • Newport News, while not on the same level as neighboring Norfolk, still has its fair share of rush hour traffic, particularly during the work week. On most days, the morning rush hour usually picks up at around 6:30-7:00 a.m. and cools down by around 9:00 a.m., while the afternoon rush comes at around 4:00 p.m. and lasts until 6:00 p.m. As far as roads to avoid, the US 17, I-64, and I-664 bridges are major bottlenecks during rush hour and drivers should time their crossings accordingly to avoid the traffic.
  • Book your rental car in Newport News at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
