Buffalo car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who rented a car in Buffalo
MarkAug 2025
You cannot go straight to your car. They don’t have a secure lot so you must stop at a kiosk in the garage for a key and check in.
JerryAug 2025
Allow up to 30 minutes extra for lines at the pick up counter.
MichelleDec 2024
Book early and definitely get the insurance because it was affordable and fair. Staff was amazing and very professional.
MaryDec 2024
If you are renting one way you must have a physical major credit card with you. Even if you pre-pay and do all of the steps beforehand you can’t rent the car without a credit card. No debit card or Apple Pay etc
MApr 2024
Fill up before dropping off. Very fast drop off.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Rent car ahead of time. If you want easy pickup and drop. Make sure company is on airport site. There’s secondary across from airport that do not offer shuttle service into airport. You would have to walk across street.
MirellaSept 2023
There are 2 places in Buffalo one inside airport and other outside the airport. That was confusing for me. Maybe better signing
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure they activate the toll tag when if you purchase unlimited tolls
Verified travelerOct 2023
Do it at the airport
Verified travelerJun 2023
As of 6/27/23, there were zero one-way rental cars available within 100 miles of Buffalo. We had to bite the bullet and take Amtrak, which turned out to be nicer and less expensive than we expected. My advice is reserve as early as humanly possible or find another way home.
JimenaJun 2023
Go to Alamo directly. Best prices bed customer service. Avoid Hertzat at all costs. They don't accept Apple credit cards, and the counter young lady was impolite and unhelpful. Go to Alamo and have a fast transaction that will put you on a brand-clean vehicle in less than seven minutes.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Try to find street parking, less expensive. The parking at Niagra Falls is free after 7pm on Sundays.
Verified travelerJun 2023
It was good. No problems. Going back and forth into Niagara Falls and Ontario was easy
JeremyJun 2023
Pick-up went smoothly in buffalo
HanniaJul 2023
Everyone and everything excellent. Thank you.
JamesJun 2023
Driving in Buffalo is rough. Traffic lanes are not clear on streets, and sometimes the same is true on the highways. Traffic itself was great, even during the traditional “rush hour” after work.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Make sure to check Google Street view to ensure the neighborhood is safe.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Clean car. Clean car. Clean car. Cater towards the clients. Basics.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Easy city to drive in. The west side is all one ways. Downtown “may” be the only issue you might have. Streets are safe.
Verified travelerMay 2023
The rentals are directly outside the terminal which is convenient for both arrival and departure.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Buffalo

  • There is a lot to love about Buffalo in upstate New York and renting a car will give you the ability to see and do the most during your trip. If you are planning on making the short 25-mile drive north to Niagara Falls, a car will not only help you arrive quicker than public transport, but will also give you the opportunity to arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds of tourists. If you plan on watching a Buffalo Bills game, having access to a car will make the event far more enjoyable, as New Era Field is located on the outskirts of town and most easily accessed by the NY-5 Highway.
  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport is host to a number of major car rental companies with plenty of options to help make your decision easy. Browse the thorough list to find the company that best suits your needs using KAYAK, then simply proceed from the baggage claim across the road to the car rental counters to pick up the keys. If you are planning on heading straight to Niagara Falls, consider stopping by the wineries to enjoy the small village charm that Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer.
  • The fresh climate and dense parklands around Buffalo make it a popular city for cycling and other leisure activities. Be mindful of bike lanes and cyclists you share the road with; it is always best to provide more room than you think is necessary to create a safer environment.
  • If you are not used to driving in the snow and are planning a trip to Buffalo, it is smart to familiarize yourself with some winter driving tips sooner rather than later. Heavy snowfall is common in Buffalo during the winter months and it is important that you regularly check the latest weather forecast using radio or online resources. Snow on the roads will mean that your tires have less traction, making it more important than ever to brake early and reduce speed. It is also not advisable to use cruise control in any vehicle while there is snow on the roads.

They wouldn't let me rent the car without a flight number because it was booked at the airport. This was not disclosed and now it's taking forever to get a refund because I used the pay later option through Affirm and now have to go through a dispute process. This is horrible!!!

I used to work in the rental car business so this is not coming from a perspective of entitlement but rather experience. This SUV that was rented was simply not cleaned at all. There was a complete lack of care by the Budget employees at the airport in Buffalo. I did not report this at the time because the walk to the car is far away from the counter and I had to get to my appointment. Complaining wouldn’t be necessary and waste everyone’s time if a job was done properly from the beginning.

I did not like it at all. Kayak is only a front runner for another corporation that takes your money and I never got a car when I got to my destination and I haven't gotten all my money back yet. I did not understand that you're not really going to kayak kayak is just looking for cars for somebody else who may or may not get your car for you. I didn't like the experience at all and I never got my money back from kayak. I only got partial funds back from a corporation called QEEQ there you go.

I didn't end up getting my car. I waited in line for over an hour, saw them check out less than 10 people, and was then told they didn't have cars available for anyone except the people that had reserved a minivan. I ended up canceling my reservation and booking a car with Enterprise the next day. If at all possible, I'll never use Hertz again.

Because it was an unexpected rental due to flight cancellation, it was last minute. They were experiencing some technical issues but were able to get us taken care of fairly quickly and were very helpful and friendly. The vehicle provided was perfect.

This was a miserable experience where the reservation made has not honored by Enterprise Rent-a-car Buffalo airport desk agent or manager. Although booked correctly on your site they decided to tell me not vehicles were available while I had seen multiple vehicles in the parking lot waiting for pick-up.

Kayak’s link to Enterprise was a DEAD END - not once but 3 times. Enterprise did not have the cars Kayak indicated they had. It cost me hours to sort out including an extra 4-hour round trip to Buffalo to get the vehicle we needed through other dealers. BAD EXPERIENCE WITH KAYAK - ENTERPRISE
