Top tips for hiring a car at Burlington airport

  • A rental vehicle in Burlington, VT allows you to experience the city like a local. The downtown area is located a relatively shorter distance from the flight hub. While you might consider boarding a bus or taxi, these only take you to a specific terminus, with a few stops along the way. By partnering with a car rental at Burlington Airport (BTV), you get a vehicle that you can drive to any destination you like, attend meetings in style with a classy ride, and even go off-roading with an AWD without worry of getting stuck.
  • Driving in Burlington is relatively easy, although it's critical to understand the traffic rules before driving around. While a continuous double yellow line in the middle of the road indicates "No Overtaking" in other countries, you are allowed to overtake unless there's a road sign indicating a "No Passing Zone". Additionally, a right-hand turn is permissible on a red light unless there's a sign telling you otherwise. If you choose to use Williston Rd 2 heading toward the city center, you can expect heavy traffic on Main St, especially during the rush hour.
  • Once your rental contract is over, your Burlington Airport car rental will require you to return the car within the specified time. It's easy because you return it to the exact location you pick it up. When you reach the airport, you'll see "Rental Car Return" signs leading to your rental company's designated parking lot. Is your flight scheduled to take off outside the vehicle rental operating hours? You can still return the car during the after-hours. Park the vehicles and secure the locks, drop the keys in the key safe, and you'll be ready to head to your departure terminal.
  • Saving money with a car rental at Burlington Airport can be tricky, considering that onsite rental companies usually include a "premium location surcharge," tax fees, and other extra costs for various things such as GPS mapping and electronic toll devices. One secret of cutting down your on-airport vehicle rental costs is to purchase your rental company's auto insurance. Not only does it reduce your liability significantly, but it also alleviates the need to pay for the additional costs.
  • Book your car hire at Burlington airport at least 7 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Burlington airport

  • Where can I find car rental counters at Burlington International Airport?

Arriving passengers will find car rental counters conveniently located in the main terminal, right across the baggage conveyor belt. Specifically located at 1200 Airport Dr, the internationally renowned rent-a-car companies have desks next to each other, and you can easily choose your preferred Burlington Airport car rental. Once you're done with the booking process, you can access the vehicle onsite. From the counter, use the skywalk to access the parking lot where the car waits.

  • Do I have to refill my rental car's tank before returning it?

Usually, you won't find your car waiting for you with a full tank. Refilling the tank before returning depends on whether you purchased the gas during pickup or not. If you did, then you need to return the car to the same gas level you picked it. If you prefer not to refuel the tank, your car rental at Burlington flight hub will charge you according to their local rates, which are typically steeper than the standard gas prices. You can access a refueling station south of the flight hub, along Airport Dr.

  • What requirements must I meet to rent a car at Burlington Airport?

Any traveler wishing to obtain a vehicle from a car rental at Burlington Airport must be age 21 or older. You also must have a payment card (either a credit/debit card from a major provider) bearing the renter's full name. Furthermore, you'll need to have a valid, government-issued driver's license. Any foreign national will require a passport as proof of identity and an international driving license. Note that 21 to 24-year-old renters might be required to pay a daily "young renter's surcharge" and will be limited to only specific types of cars.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Burlington airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Burlington airport to off-airport locations include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, National, and Rent-A-Wreck.

The staff at the Burlington office were constantly interrupting working with a customer to argue with other customers who were dropping off keys. At one point there was a stand still where nothing happened for a couple of minutes, I was too fearful to ask what was happening with my car because I thought they might blow up. The car was filthy, my water bottle rolled on the floor and it was so covered with dirt. The front window was covered with something that was difficult to see out of. I had to stop at a gas station to wash the windows. I couldn’t believe how filthy the car was. I appreciate the the price and the drop off location was better.

No rental car was available at our pickup time. The attendant when we arrived was rude, repeatedly left the counter without explanation, and offered no compensation to get us to our hotel for the night, requiring us to get an Uber at our own expense. All this being said, the attendant when we did finally pick up the car the following day was very helpful, courteous, and accommodating of the situation.

The attendant at Burlington knew I was dropping off the vehicle in Paramus NJ, but tried to give me an EV with very little range, which would not have made the trip. I got her to give me a different vehicle, but she gave me a Mustang with rear wheel drive and not great tires. Unfortunately it snowed the that night and I almost could not make it out of Burlington because the roads were not plowed. Luckily it did not snow further south and I was able to make the trip. Rear wheel drive in Vermont in the Winter is never a good idea. Had I known it was so bad in the snow, I probably would have requested a different vehicle. Luckily I am a very experienced driver and was able adapt and navigate the slick roads without incident. However, the person at the drop off in NJ was great. He was very understanding and helpful. Great employee.

We arrived and they had a sign that said if you made your reservation 48 hrs ago (we made it at least a month prior) Or going one way (we were driving a total of 10-12 hours with 3 stops and in remote areas) they did not have a car. When we got to the counter, they said they didn’t even have any reservation for us at all! And when I asked what do we do? They said take an uber or a taxi. Really? We paid $65 to get to the ferry and had to figure out to get to Westport, NY , then Ticonderoga,NY, Williamsport, PA and eventually Philadelphia, PA And renting through another car r ed natal was not an option. There weren’t any cars anywhere. Stressful is an understatement.

They assigned me an electric car. My reservation was from Vermont to Buffalo, same day drop off. Electric car only has range of 200 miles. Ibwouls have had to stop and charge the car twice on the trip. It takes 1-4 hours to charge each time. Obviously wouldn't work. They charged me $30 upgrade fee to get a gas car. This is higher than if I booked a gas car to begin with.

Pick up in Burlington was great—quick and easy, friendly and helpful staff. Drop off in DC at Union Station was horrible—drove around for an hour trying to find the return location, signs were either nonexistent or just plain wrong, and later got charged for fuel because the gas tank wasn’t full due to the extra hour of driving, even though staff at the drop-off location said they would waive the charges. Even at the drop-off location, almost no staff and signs, some employee had to waive me down and told me to park in a random spot to return the car rather than a proper return lane. No way to protest charges except to fill out a random feedback form.

I reserved an intermediate SUV. Got email confirmation from kayak. Went to Hertz and they had reserved for me a small EV. Not big enough to fit my family. They told me if i wanted a bigger car i would have to pay more. They had no record of me requesting an intermediate SUV. They told me that I would have to talk to Kayak to get a refund. They told me they are unable to process refunds and that kayak is responsible for that. I am not sure that is true. I called hertz national customer service and they said they would refund but didnt give me a specific confirmation number. We ended up not getting the car. I still dont know if we are getting a refund
