Kahului car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who rented a car in Kahului
BrettSept 2026
Make sure the rental facility address is at the airport or at the designated car rental place. .
Verified travelerJul 2026
Take photos of the entire vehicle, up-close of dings, a video all around. Some dealers will use camera/AI tech to scan your vehicle, avoid those dealers at all costs. Drive friendly around the island. Don't be afraid to smile and throw up the shaka when driving around. Drive Aloha
Verified travelerJun 2026
Book at a car rental agency. Don’t book “dealer’s choice” unless you truly are ok with them giving you anything they have. Although a real car rental agency would probably not give you a work truck in bad shape.
NanetteMay 2026
It really depends on where people would drive on the island and how many people are traveling together. We don't travel to Hana. The road to Hana is so narrow and windy and there's quite a few one- lane very narrow bridges you have to drive on. Very often , one has to back up to let the incoming traffic go. I would not choose too wide of a vehicle if one is traveling to Hana
Verified travelerApr 2026
Make sure your rental car has a spare tire. I guess it’s policy for the rental car companies to take them out. If going on “road to Hana” stop at a store and get yourself 2-3 cans of “Fix a Flat”. Might save a day of your vacation.
Verified travelerMay 2026
Rent a SUV and get in line ASAP. The line at pick up can be long.
Verified travelerJan 2026
Sign up for hertz gold so you can go straight to vehicle and not stop at desk !
VincentJan 2026
Get express checkout instead of waiting inline
CAROLFeb 2026
If, when you get to the desk, they tell you they don’t have the car that you had signed up for, you might want to be firm. We accepted a large SUV and it was not easy to drive on the road to Hanna.
AnnaDec 2025
Fuel is expensive so keep that in mind. Traffic can be heavy, plan accordingly and don’t rush. Island time.
Verified travelerDec 2025
Rent from the airport locations.
KarenOct 2025
An SUV is optimal as some driving might require a higher under carriage. Also this would make sure you had enough room for luggage etc.
ImranSept 2025
Any car will work. RAV4 and Jeeps are not needed to do the Hana Drive. The roads are well maintained that small cars can navigate.
AlissaNov 2025
Pay for your reservation in advance if you are booking a rental car or book with an independently owned family rental car company
ArjunNov 2025
signage for car rental returns are very poor near the airport especially late at night and when it is dark. Hard to tell where the turn offs are.
KeithJul 2025
A full-size vehicle is a better option than a SUV for a week on gas.
JeffJul 2025
Join the Budget express to cut out the long line. I wish I had.
Verified travelerApr 2025
If you must have a car rental reservation, make sure there’s free cancellation in case of extremely long pick-up line. Other rental companies will have similar cars available without the wait and will price match. Also Costco gas is literally next to the drop-off area so keep that in mind if you’re a member.
JenniferApr 2025
Rent at ACE…..it’s off airport but very close and they have a shuttle…..it’s so easy and not crowded and prices are the best! Also everyone is super nice! I’ve rented there the past 3 times on Maui and will continue to whenever I’m there!!
Verified travelerMar 2025
It’s great that the rentals are now located at the airport. Makes it convenient and easy to get your vehicle and get started on your vacation.
CherieDec 2024
My advice, document (pictures or film) the car, don't be too tired or hurried to make sure everything works and gas is full. Never leave the car alone without someone watching after arriving, especially at the stores. Tourists are prey.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
rent a smaller SUV - a medium size SUV was difficult to navigate & park.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Make SURE your rental car office in ON AIPORT GROUNDS and open when you land. I assumed and I was wrong. Wasted more than $250 being transported back and forth by taxi and uber. And if you HAVE to be transported, take Uber, NOT a taxi. Uber is much more affordable.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Smaller compact cars. Parking spots tend to be very narrow in many public places. However, I would recommend a jeep or SUV if you plan on doing more exploring. Such as road to Hana or beaches. Some of the roads can be rough in these areas.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Rent from popular companies in the airport
brahimNov 2024
Get 4x4 instead of small car
Verified travelerJun 2024
Most rental cars appeared to be minivans or jeeps - the later would be better if continuing beyond Hana or going into the mountains. We had a minivan that was great for costal trips. Remember to bring your insurance card from home.
Verified travelerAug 2024
You are very close to the airport from the car rental, which is great. You don’t need to add an extra hour for the shuttle.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Bring a copy of the insurance
Verified travelerJul 2024
They asked for proof of insurance! Had to call my insurance company! Once someone signs waiver that should be the end of it as it always is usually. They just wanted to sell their insurance. Carry your insurance cards with you
Verified travelerApr 2024
It's always good to have air conditioning in anything that is rented and be sure to note any damage at pick up. I liked Ace was located across from Costco, plus I found their shuttle service very good.
DerekMar 2024
6 or more people need a larger vehicle. The backup camera was appreciated.
WendyMar 2024
Smaller vehicles are best, parking is a premium, smaller is easier
GordDec 2023
Most local drivers in Maui are very courteous. No horns, glares or middle fingers anywhere! Bring their spirit home to wherever you live and drive the same way.
Verified travelerJan 2024
We got a jeep- would recommend a jeep or SUV or similar if exploring the island as some roads are rough
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Driving was fine. Very busy going South on the island about 4:00 pm
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Make sure the rental car company you choose is actually located at the airport.
RedaOct 2023
Follow the traffic rules. If you take road to Hana and have never done it before, be extra cautious and courteous on the road. If someone is behind you, find a safe spot to let the other car pass you.
Kiefer-LaurentNov 2023
Respect the roads on Maui. Leave your big city driving habits at home, and enjoy your time.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Please dive slow and respect the native people and culture. Mahalo
Verified travelerSept 2023
Keep on mind that car needs to be return same way you picked up. Remove sand w vacuum before returning it. Will save you the cleaning fee.
MyrnaNov 2023
Verify exact location if getting there other than lying into the airport. A shuttle service to and from your location would be extremely welcoming.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Like driving in any other State. The only thing is the highest speed limit on highway was 45 mph
Verified travelerJul 2023
Much faster than renting at the airport Their shuttle was fast and convenient
Verified travelerAug 2023
Highly recommend dollar and get a jeep
KristyJul 2023
Definitely rent a car and explore!
WilliamJun 2023
When you get in the car, have your phone flashlight or something available and on. Quickly open the door, and check for bugs. They scatter quick. But they only come out in the dark. So you may see it in a parking garage or your won’t know till night time hits. CHECK YOUR VEHICLE!! Hawaii is starting to have problems.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Well…we were evacuated at 3:45, so our driving experience was not typical. Otherwise I would advise to be patient and remember that we are visitors to the island and to respect the locals make their livelihoods and homes there.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Check your personal car insurance first — insurance was expensive. And take video and photos of the car at pick up and drop off — ours had a lot of damaged paint that we didn’t want to be held responsible for.
LisaJun 2023
If you plan to drive the island make sure you are comfortable driving the car you get. The mountain areas can be very tight driving conditions and even 1 lane bridges.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Would not recommend a Chevy Equinox. It was okay but not great.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Check online. Can’t best $20 a day!
Verified travelerMay 2023
Drive with aloha, nowhere near enough people do anymore and it is not just the tourists. As far as a rental car place that is closed at 4 pm in a place where 90% of the mainland departures leave for red eye flights is perplexing.
BrentMay 2023
Rent with ACE but be prepared it is off site but still close by airport. Gas station is conveniently located across the street from location and shuttles run every 10-15min which is good.
taosMay 2023
Ace is the best go with Ace
DavidMay 2023
Nothing remarkable to report here. It's pretty easy to navigate. Like a lot of touristy places, parking is hit-or-miss.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Kahului

  • Get the most out of your trip to Kahului with a rental car. Explore everything this scenic area has to offer, from the beach to the Twin Falls Maui Waterfall (about 19 miles from Kahului center) to the West Maui Forest Reserve. Discover the beauty of Maui nature with the comfort and flexibility a rental car can offer.
  • Kahului Airport is just under 4 miles from the city center and features a rental car center with eight companies represented, including Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, and Thrifty. The service center can be found at the end of the Baggage Claim Area, but shuttle buses from the terminals also operate and bring travelers to and from the rental center. Depending on where you stay, the drive into the city via Lanui Cir will take about 10 minutes.
  • The driving speed in Maui is generally lower than in most parts of the world, so lean back and enjoy a pleasant, relaxed, and hassle-free ride. Interstates and freeways are not common around Kahului and streets can be narrow, so drive at a moderate speed. Despite the stunning scenery, keep your eyes on the road, as deer and the occasional cow can cross at any given time, but especially at dusk and dawn.
  • Driving in Kahului is not recommended during 4 and 6 PM, as this is the general rush hour in Maui and many roads are narrow, meaning contraflow traffic can be a bit challenging. If possible, venture out in the mornings and return after 6 PM to avoid congestion. Kahului is renowned for its beautiful weather, but torrential rain showers can also occur -- it is not advisable to hit the road when it is pouring out.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Kahului for ₹ 4,649 or less
  • Small rental cars in Kahului are around 56% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about renting a car in Kahului

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Kahului?

Since many streets in Kahului are narrow, a compact car is a good choice for a vacation here. Additionally, a smaller car will ease the parking lot search and contraflow traffic will be grateful when you can whizz through the lanes without blocking the road.

  • What’s the speed limit in Kahului?

Always adhere to the speed limits in Kahului, even if others do not, as the traffic law enforcement is pretty strict in Maui. Embrace the “aloha” driving style and relax your speed, as Hawaii is the state with the lowest maximum speed, allowing 55 mph on freeways and 25 mph in residential areas and when children are in the vicinity. Also look at the speed limit posted and adhere to it, or go slower if the road or weather conditions demand it.

  • Where are the best places to park in Kahului?

If your hotel does not have a parking lot, a good alternative is the P+R in the south of Kahului or the Kahului Park, where cars can be parked conveniently. Street parking is also an option, but usually only allowed for up to 60 minutes and not overnight, so opting for a hotel with a parking lot or using a public parking garage is preferable.

  • How much does it cost to rent a car in Kahului?

On average a rental car in Kahului costs ₹ 5,512 per day.

  • Which hire car agencies are at Kahului airport (OGG)?

Car hire companies onsite at Kahului airport include Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, Avis, Ace, Alamo and Sixt.

Not sure I got the best deal. I rented through Kayak and was quoted a price. My CC got compromised shortly after ordering my car through Kayak. When I went to pickup my car at Sixt the agent wanted my CC used to rent the car. I asked why it was already paid. I told him what happened the the CC. He said he would have to cancel the prior reservation, and start over. When all said and done I feel the car cost was more than the orignal reservation. Did not want to hassle with it as long as I got refunded my orignal purchase. Six days later the refund posted. The guy at the counter was nice but the whole process did not make since given the car had already been paid and appoved. Any additional expenses should have been applied to the new CC. When checking out the rental no one walked through the car inspection. No way to document any damage observed prior to driving off. Also no option to pay for fuel in advance or at least it was never explained. Most agencies tell you the cost of fuel at the rental car and give you the option to pay in advance. Checking the car in the lady was friendly and inspected the car thoroughly same thing should be done initialy ensuring the leasee understands the features of the car. I had one experience where I failed to shut the drivers door completely and when I tried to to put the car in reverse it locked up and would go saying parking assist engaged. Spent 20 minutes playing with the car until i realized that the car would not engage because the door had not completely closed. I would rent from them again.

Landed at the airport in Maui and went to the shuttle pick up. Our name was on the pick up list but "it wasn't highlighted" therefore the driver wasn't "allowed" to drive us to the office for our car. Come to find out it's because ACE gave away our car, despite having a reservation. This left us stranded at 445pm and scrambling to find a rental car. They gave away their last vehicle around 9am too and at no point decided to email, text or call me to at least let me know so I could find other accommodations. DO NOT RENT FROM ACE.

Did NOT know that Enterprise rental office was OFF AIRPORT AND CLOSED when we landed. Website needs to make this VERY CLEAR! Taxi charged $150 bucks to hotel then had to Uber back to Enterprise the next for another fee. Any savings was totally wiped out but the transport fee’s.

No spare tire in van. Spent the better part of a day dealing with it when problem could have been solved in 10-15 minutes. Budget said they take the spares out of the vans… what kind of policy is that? Broken down on “road to Hana” nearest gas station 1hr 15 minutes away… one way! Wasted day of vacation over a flat tire.

The Pick-Up was an extremely poor experience. From the moment we got to the terminal and the woman outside demanded that only renters are allowed inside. Anyone else had to wait outside with the baggage. I waited in line for one hour, because there was only one agent working the Budget window. Eventually, a couple of other agents came out to help, but that was over 40 minutes into still waiting in line. The thing that really set me off was one agent, an older, white gentleman, after he came back from his break, made a joke “now helping #477“ Everyone in line looked at each other with bewilderment and I finally said something out loud, “we’ve been waiting in line for 45 minutes and you’re making jokes?“ It was completely inappropriate. You would think that on a Saturday afternoon in Maui, Budget would have staffed more appropriately for the level of business they were experiencing. I’m going to guess it’s this busy every Saturday at that time.

Convertible mustang was a complete mess inside and out. Someone previously partially ripped/damaged the exhaust so it sounded like a wounded duck. Shotty pre-inspection by Avis. Inside door handles covered in greasy finger prints from sun lotion and bird s@#$ all over the hood and convertible top. Won't rent from Avis again.

I was double-billed for this car: $454.29 from QEEQ.com who placed the rental order and $619.64 from Budget. When I disputed this double charge, Budget said I was late for picking up my car, so the original order had been cancelled and new order placed. I stood in line for the rental car for over one hour -- that's why I didn't pick up the car on time. I was there, the rental desk was understaffed and the line of renters was very long.

We were "upgraded" to a Ford Explorer-too big of a car for us. We asked for something smaller and agent said she'd change the vehicle. When we arrived at the car...it was a Ford Explorer. We were tired from a long trip and didn't want to drag our bags back and wait in line for another hour to fix it. We took the car and then tried to call a few days later to arrange an exchange. Could never get through to a live person and got hung up on by the automated number 2x. Beyond this, agent kept forcing insurance coverages on us. We wanted the collision...she was relentless and literally forced us to buy more. We got tired of arguing with her about it. Will never use Dollar again.

We picked up the vehicle within 15 -20 minutes after arriving at the sales desk. The counter person was polite and straight forward. We did not purchase additional upgrade, pre-paid gas or insurance. The only draw-back was the full size vehicle we wanted only available in one model and the three available were all black color with black interior. We were in Maui and wishing to have a lighter color car to drive in because of the heat. This was the only issue. So we were very satisfied.

My reservation pricing details were vastly different than my confirmation ($1100+ vs $400+). Was told the manager would fix it in the system before I got to the representative who clears you to leave in the parking lot. That didn’t happen and I had to go back inside for 20 more mins to get it cleared up. They said it was all good however, now I’m being charged an additional $80 over the initial price. Rental cars shouldn’t be this complicated. Now I have to spend more time calling to get this fixed.

The shuttle driver that picked me up was Amazing(Ella?)!!! The one that dropped me off was horribly rude! While trying to return the car(yes I read the extensive directions) I tried pulling into the lot and was screamed at to back up and when I didn’t immediately because there was a car behind, she started waving her arms and shaking her head. I finally turned into the lot and then she said I didn’t listen to her and parked wrong. And this is a very tight lot and I’m driving a big pick-up truck and there was no other place to park. The young lady who took the keys and checked me out was polite. Clearly this is not a rental car agency. The place is a weird location and looks more like a repair shop. I was given a very large work pick-up truck regardless that I said it was for only 1 person. And I get its dealer’s choice but had I known it could be this big truck, I would have booked elsewhere. When I asked for anything smaller I was told nothing was available. The truck was not clean and smelled of smoke, regardless that it says, no smoking. I would never use this place again as it set a very bad tone for the beginning and ending of my trip.
