Insights shared by verified travellers who rented a car in Carolina

Find out all the prices before you get to the rental place even if they tell you that it make sure you're paying for all you're going to pay for before you get there. Make sure to inspect the car, of course, and do what you need to do to have a good time. Enjoy!
Verified travelerMay 2026
Puerto Rico is a chaotic driving scene. Most mainland rules are seen more like suggestions. Keep your eyes on the road and be prepared for people to turn when you don’t expect it. On the plus side everyone seems aware of the chaos, I got more smiles and waves in Puerto Rico than I do in a month at home
PaulJan 2026
Rental cars can be scarce in Puerto Rico especially during busy tourist times on the island. Book early!
DerrickDec 2025
Take pics and video of car condition before pickup and drop off. Ask more questions about where tolls are charged to not incur unnecessary charges at the desk.
EvelynJan 2026
Be vigilant. Check the car and contract thoroughly before leaving the car rental location.
Verified travelerJan 2026
rent directly from the airport not through a 3rd party
Verified travelerSept 2025
To book in the early morning hours before the craziness of the day begins, as this place is very close to the airport and it gets overly crowded.
Verified travelerJul 2025
I’d go with a larger company out of the terminal. Upfront you know what you’re paying.
Verified travelerJun 2025
Definitely buy the ins online, it's a bit cheaper. I thought I did but it didnt go through.
RonaldAug 2025
Make sure the link that states in terminal actually takes you to an in terminal rental agency.
JenaroJul 2025
Get it from the Airport. Not worth the money to go off airport.
JoselynJun 2025
Don’t book your car in here to save money, in special if is your first time visiting. Go with those rent place in the airport (Hertz, Avis, Budget). I know they are more expensive but you will be in/out quick without dealing with the poor service and running the chance of not having a car like happen to few families there.
Verified travelerJul 2025
Do not accept the car if it’s dirty they will charge you for cleaning it
Verified travelerMar 2025
I would probably book with a car service that is located on the airport premises so you don’t have to worry about finding a shuttle.
Erik and ShanaMar 2025
It's off-site, but doesn't take long. The streets and drivers in PR are different than in the U.S. - roads are narrow and you have to be confident in your driving abilities!
Verified travelerMay 2025
Be patient, morning/ daytime is quicker and easier then over night
Verified travelerMay 2025
4x4 because roads are rather destroyed
AslinMar 2025
Rent a car inside the airport.
Verified travelerMar 2025
It's not at the airport. You have to take a shuttle. There's going to be a $250. charge that they'll refund you if you return the car in one piece. For God sakes keep the paperwork they give you when you get the car!!!! You need it when you turn the car in. And anticipate long lines and wait time when trying to get the car. Expect it to smell like cigarette smoke.
Verified travelerMar 2025
Go with a big well known company on site of the airport. The savings of the off site small companies are not worth it for the frustration terrible service and shady policies
MariaFeb 2025
Definitely Book with a rental agency that is at the actual airport and does not require you to take a shuttle. We ended up booking another day at Avis in Ceiba. Wonderful experience
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Use a rental company that is National, not local. Be vary wary if the location is not "On Terminal". If the advertised price seems too good to be true, cancel and rent somewhere else.
ClareDec 2024
Clean the car before returning. Call when you want picked up from the airport.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Know how much you’re gonna pay before you pick up the car
Verified travelerJan 2025
Get to the rental earlier. And check reviews before booking
EliezerFeb 2025
Checking the car before leaving the rental place
Verified travelerJan 2025
Stick with an established, reputable rental company located at the airport rather than offsite - Hertz, Thrifty, Avis, etc. AVOID ROUTES AND ITS AFFILIATED COMPANIES. THEY ARE DISREPUTABLE AND WILL START YOUR VACATION OFF BADLY
Verified travelerAug 2024
Be patient and ready to wait for hours. Or book from another place. I had booked from other places and I never waited that long. Maybe it was the day and hour. I guess don’t rent for a Friday at noon.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Don’t book compact cars. The roads are not good in Puerto Rico throughout the island. The higher your car is off the ground the safer.
JoeAug 2024
Better to get your car rental from the airport instead
LuisJun 2024
Check hidden fees before booking your rental.
WandaJul 2024
Always ask about the toll policy. Most companies charge an activation fee and a fee everyday of your rental whether you use the tolls or not. It's a rip-off. If you don't pay for activation at the time of the rental (pick-up) you may incur in a fine if you end up using a toll. Then you'll have to pay the fine, activation fee, and everyday fee for the duration of the rental period. Have your insurance information handy. I notice these days that if you decline the rental company's insurance they ask very specific information about your personal insurance, which I think is a bit much.
Verified travelerAug 2024
You can’t use your own car insurance unless you’re own vehicle is a 2019 or new car. What does that have to do with anything is beyond me. And video the vehicle share any previous damages are. Ask for a breakdown ahead of time so they don’t try to hustle you.
ChrisMay 2024
The shuttle is gray and orange with the names of several rental companies on the side. (Wasn’t looking for a van with multiple companies on it) The instructions In The email said to call a number provided in order to get instructions for pick up. That is not needed. The email should say go to the shuttle area right outside of baggage claim to the left and approximately how often the shuttle picks up. I had no problems but it was confusing. Also a checklist of things that will be required at the rental desk would be helpful. I had no problems but I saw sever other customers that were not prepared and not only were they frustrated it did hold up the line. Driver’s license Insurance info (I think a lot of people missed this step) Credit card (not debit card) Confirmation number Resort or hotel address. (People were looking that up at the counter. Slowing the process) I had a great experience but these are the things that might help.
JeanieMar 2024
If you’re going to the airport add an extra hour to your time. The free shuttle is less than ten minutes but we waited 45 minutes for it after being told it would be there “15, 20… maybe 25 minutes.” If there’s no shuttle already there, take an Uber instead.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Not all of the providers have drop off locations at the airport it seems. Check with the company before about any additional fees you may incur.
EricApr 2024
Economy best to rent insurance sometimes taken care by person credit card so before purchasing insurance from rental places inquire about your credit card first
KrystalMay 2024
Make sure you paid the car rental coverage with the actual place of where you renting the car. Don’t do third party rental coverage.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Ask about having to show proof of your own insurance.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Be very wary of all the potholes. Also the lines in the road are not very well defined and drivers like to change lanes or make turns without blinkers. If you take a wrong turn there's a good chance you're going to be on a very rough road with little chance to turn around. I never felt unsafe driving there just needed to be ultra cautious
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Driving in Carolina or anywhere in Puerto Rico is like anywhere else. Pay attention. I try to stay in the middle lanes. Seems like the right lanes have more pot holes. If you need to get over or change lanes, aggressive is accepted behavior. If you wait for someone to let you in, you'll most likely miss your turn.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Go elsewhere. Prices at the rental agencies near the airport seemed higher online but we’re probably pretty comparable after all was settled. And easier pickup without waiting for a shuttle. Maybe this is common knowledge, but have personal/credit card insurance coverage ready to show
Verified travelerFeb 2024
If you are not going to use their insurance, make sure you have proof of your own insurance or they will give you a hard time.
MaxDec 2023
Lots of the highways on the island are toll roads. Make sure you pay for the extra “unlimited tolls” option when renting a car.
Verified travelerJan 2024
Driving is ok in Carolina/San Juan. Lots of bumps and holes in the roads that can possibly ruin the car
Verified travelerNov 2023
I would try dollar rental .The only car company that i didnt feel like I was being ripped off
Verified travelerSept 2023
NÜ car gave us a great car at a very reasonable price.
DavidAug 2023
Go early in the day if at all possible. Around 7-9am, there’s practically no one in line for picking cars up, nor dropping them off. The later in the you go, the more time you add to your pickup.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Tell Avis & Budget is the same Company. I had a little problem to get my rental car under Budget parking lot, later my car rental car was under Avis parkings. Just a little fine tune, so we had this cleared.
Verified travelerJun 2023
People in PR drive different from the US, so please be mindful and DON’T honk at people! They take it as disrespect. You’ll probably have to drive faster than you would back home for sure.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Have more staff on hand. Clean the cars thoroughly.
Verified travelerMay 2023
It was nice not too much traffic during my trip . Would definitely go back to Carolina Puerto Rico !
Verified travelerMay 2023

KirkMay 2023
Be prepared for narrow roads and perhaps more congested traffic than you may expect. No issues though

This was, without a doubt, the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. We arrived expecting to pick up our reserved vehicle, only to be told there were no cars available. We were put on a waiting list and ended up waiting from 1:30 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. at the rental office because there were simply no vehicles. We had no choice but to spend the entire night there. To make matters worse, there was only one employee trying to handle an endless line of frustrated customers. I was number 12 on the waiting list, and people just kept arriving while everyone waited for hours with little information. When we finally received a vehicle, we discovered it had cockroaches inside. After waiting all night, getting into an infested car was completely unacceptable. This company clearly overbooks reservations without having enough vehicles available, leaving customers stranded for hours. A reservation should actually mean a car will be available. The lack of planning, staffing, cleanliness, and customer service made this an incredibly stressful and disappointing experience. I would never rent from this company again and would strongly encourage others to look elsewhere.

Waiting 2 hours to pick up the car, even though had a reservation. One hour in line to get to the desk to show my reservation. Of course they didn’t have the vehicle I rented or similar vehicle. Got something different. Ok, still served our purpose. Went outside to get the car and saw that there was at least 40 people waiting for their car. Not exaggerating, there might have been more. Waited another hour outside in the heat with two small kids and nowhere to sit. The experience was mind boggling. It was an expensive rental and the car was given to us muddy and sandy—-even though I waiting an hour for the car be presumably cleaned to be given to me. Upon return, they said I would receive my receipt via email. I’m still waiting. I have no way of confirming that what I was charged is accurate, it’s more than the estimate. Don’t have much hope in being helped by calling. What a terrible experience.

Hands down the rudest and worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. The girl running the desk was over 1 hour late and I had to get the hotel front desk to call her cell phone for her to actually show up. After this, she couldn’t figure out how to unlock one of her own companies cars so I sat there for another hour wasting more time. When I asked her what was going on she dismissed me and continued speaking in Spanish to her colleague. At the end of the day I wasted 2.5 hours of my morning and ended up going to Enterprise where the same process took 10 minutes.

The lines outside the Pick up window was about 85 people deep and there were only 2 Customer Service agents. Each agent took about 20-25 mins per customer. At that rate, my number would have come the next day. Also, your employees were very rude and unhelpful despite my status. After waiting for 1 hour, we left in frustration and hailed an Uber to our destination. Shameful. I regret ever signing up with you guys. Worst experience. The people in this location do not really seem to care about the customer or their work. Zero motivation, Zero interest. They're doing their jobs only 'coz of a paycheck. These lazy and toxic employees will sink your company because they are the ones controlling your customer service experience. There is a reason Puerto Rico is in such a deep decline.

The pickup process was terrible and very slow and uninformed. It was not worth the discounted price for the poor service. On my trip the car was parked in front of the Airbnb. When I came out on the last morning there was a scratch on the door. When I returned the car the process was equally slow. I arrived early so I would not miss my flight and I was almost late. I have my own zero deductible travel insurance with $45,000 rental coverage plus I purchased their zero deductible coverage. They charged me $500 deductible anyway saying it was their policy. I said that is not ok but that’s what they did. They said my insurance will reimburse me. I hope they do. I would not recommend this car rental company and I will not use them again.

Pickup was extremely long. It look over an hour to get our car. The process for rental is very slow and frustrating as there were people standing around with luggage everywhere. Also, the mandatory insurance was not appreciated . This was not clear during the reservation on Kayak. The premium is far exaggerated and unfair for international travellers. They are basically charging a half year worth premium for a short term rental . It almost seems illegal The car itself was very nice and clean

Car was fine. Pickup took an hour. Additional fees ballooned the price 3x from the original quote.

I am writing to formally request a full refund for a car rental reservation that was never honored. When we arrived at the rental location, we were informed that we could not rent the vehicle due to pricing discrepancies between the website and the in-person rates. The rental company advised us that because the reservation was made through a third party, we would need to contact them directly for a refund. As a result, we never received or used the vehicle. I contacted Expedia, who stated they needed authorization from Kayak to process the refund. After multiple attempts, Expedia was able to reach Kayak, but the refund request was denied. This is extremely frustrating, as no service was provided and the rental was refused at no fault of our own. Since the vehicle was never released to us and we did not use the rental in any capacity, I am requesting a full refund of the amount charged. I have supporting documentation and confirmation details available upon request. I would appreciate your prompt assistance in resolving this matter. Please let me know the next steps to complete this refund. Thank you for your time and attention.

Worst experience ever! the following issues occurred in order. They require to see proof that my personal car insurance was covered in Puerto Rico and needed to send declaration letter Time taken 45 minutes, was then charged another $100 for tax and use of tolls, car was not ready and was told to wait 30 minutes to clean it. Asked for a car that was already cleans and drove away with a car that lost its brakes on interstates and I almost died. Crawled back to store to get an upgrade and was told that none was available and was given an econo car. Given wrong paperwork on change of car and was told that I needed a different car. At this point I had received four different vehicles and this took over three and a half hours making me totally late for my reservation. What a terrible start to of vacation I will never be running from priceless ever again! To make things even worse I spoke to other customers who had a and in one case worst experience than I had.

They added on numerous charges so that the promised charge which was $57 on Kayak came out to $140 in reality and that was without any insurance coverage. The charges were absurd like $20 processing fee. They did not deliver the car that we asked for instead it was much higher fuel usage. The car itself had 3 roaches inside . One in the glove compartment one in a plastic bag we found under the passenger seat and another in the trunk. We will not be using this service ever again

Good staff, easy pick up and drop off. The van was not good. Dirt every where, we left a glass with a little juice and in a couple of hours appears with 2 cockroaches. I had to drive below 50mph, the wheels weren’t balance so the van moved constantly. They told me they give me a 2024 Kia, but when I got in inmedietly realice it was a lie because the van had 45000 miles. Something impossible in 2 months.

Terrible experience!!! I booked for pick up at 7pm. My flight was delayed by an hour so we arrived at 8pm. There was no shuttle. Nobody picked up the phone when I called. The other shuttle drivers told me that the location was closed and that they usually closed at 5pm. So, I had to scramble and find a new rental at a much higher price because it was so last minute.

Sixt gave us a car with an extremely loud engine, something off with transmission. They car had multiple dings which they tried to pass off as from us (but my mom took her own photos at the beginning). They also tried to tack on over $500 in additional coverages that I had already declined and tried to force my family to add them despite having coverage in place, and they added everything wrong and over charged us. Still working on a final resolution and worried about having the authorizations released. They claimed we lost the manual and registration which were in the car as well. I checked before I got out.

Getting the car was very fast and easy! The staff was friendly and very helpful. I was disappointed to learn about the drop off process after closing (only 6pm) when I picked up the car. having to essentially pay for parking at the airport because there is no designated drop off was not factored into my budget for the rental, especially since I was given no advanced notice of this. It seemed like a really backwards procedure for 2024. but everything else was very smooth!

The release for the gas cap was broken and I was not able to pry open the gas cap to put gas in the car. The car was given to me that way. I had to wait a couple of hours for roadside assistance, lost half a day and had to change my plans. Also the car was given to me with the tank half-full but was marked as full on the rental agreement. I returned it full to avoid another hassle. The tow truck driver that came for roadside assistance was great. But they charged me for roadside assistance. That should be included in the cost of the car. Thank you.

People were nice. Drop off and shuttle was easy. Shuttle at the airport sucked and just ubered instructions were very unclear about going to the orange section. Bait and switched with the price got 150$ online and it ended up being nearly 500$ with taxes, tolls and insurance. Next time I’ll go with a different company. Also started my rental off with a half tank of gas instead of a full tank.

an absolutely horrible experience. i booked the car online, the price significantly changed when a came to pick up the car, it was night time, so I didn’t have any other options, but renting the car on the new conditions. and that isn’t the worst part, because this is something that I agreed for and signed, at least. the worst part followed after the drop off - I passed the car to the staff member, and was talked by him that I’ll get back the deposit in full in a couple of days. instead of $250 deposit return I only received $155. I called the company, they emailed me a new receipt, that doesn’t have my signatures, with a bunch of new charges and fees that I never confirmed. in the middle of filing the claim the agent hang up on me, so I had to call again to finalize the claim. the car was in a very poor condition, with the front fender all bended, making a scary scratching noise on the turns.
