It's pretty easy to get around the town, so don't feel restricted in your Barnstaple car hire choices. If you're visiting by yourself or as a couple and going to spend most of your time in the built-up areas, you can hire a city car or a small sedan. Larger parties and families can opt for an MPV, which will provide lots of space and large windows for sightseeing. The same can be said if you want to take a couple of road trips in North Devon, unless you plan on going off the beaten track. In that case, a 4WD makes a good option.

The speed limits in Barnstaple vary across the town, so always keep a look-out for the signs. Specific sections of the main A39 North Road have reduced limits of 40 mph, while others have a reduced limit of 30 mph. These speed limits apply inside the town as well, while you can travel at up to 60 mph on larger motorways, including most of the A39 North. The police are very vigilant, and have adopted a no-tolerance policy that at times has seen around 1,000 motorists fined in a single month.

These are dotted all over the town, so you won't struggle to find one near to where you're going.
