Guatemala has heavy traffic, and it's necessary to have a navigation system connected to your vehicle to make your stay in this beautiful country easier.

Rent a small car and get the insurance.

FreddyApr 2025

I rented a small economy car, better get a SUV if you want to travel around the country because roads are in bad conditions

Verified travelerAug 2023

Rent ahead of time, rent at a place across the bridge from the airport. Don’t rent at any place that requires a drive. Always rent SUV or pick up since they are safer on curved roads with potholes and better to climb mountains with. A place shouldn’t be charging you any extra fees. Make sure you get a rate and pay ahead of time in order to not get scammed there. Locals are amazing people, very friendly, and great at customer service and respect, but, they do love sucking the dollars out of you. However, at the end of the day if it’s only a few bucks more who cares, but if it’s a substantial difference find a new place. Always take videos of the rental car beforehand, one time they almost tried to blame me for a scuff that I had a video of prior to me driving it. Deposits will range from $300-$2000. I’ve paid anywhere between that and have received my money back, but make sure you use a good credit card with good insurance in case anything happens. Guatemala is a very dangerous place to drive in and you don’t want to have to pay out of pocket for scuffs and scratches.

Verified travelerAug 2023

Follow the cars in front of you. You frequently find yourself driving on the “wrong” side of the road or down a side farm road due to construction. Be bold when you drive.

Traffic in Guatemala City is terrible, be careful driving over there.

Guatemala City has much to offer adventurous visitors. Often though, these tourism treasures are only available to those who have a means of getting there. Quite frequently, this means renting a car. One great option for travelers with a vehicle at their disposal is a day trip to the volcano Pacaya. This volcano is a 49-kilometer (30-mile) drive from the city and is easily hiked in just a couple of hours.
Excited to begin your journey in Guatemala? Travelers arriving at La Aurora International Airport will find the airport’s rental car counters located both in the Arrivals Hall and outside of the main terminal in the adjacent parking lot.
In the busier sections of town there are many pedestrians on the streets, and jaywalking is a very common occurrence. This applies doubly to the heavily trafficked tourism spots and in the popular downtown areas. Drivers should make sure to drive carefully and keep their eyes open for any pedestrians who may be about to wantonly cross the street.
Guatemala City is the most populous city in the country and, as a result, it has its fair share of rush hour traffic. The morning rush hour period goes from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. most mornings during the week with slightly reduced traffic on the weekend. In the afternoon and evening, rush hour typically starts as early as 4:00 p.m. and lasts until 7:00 p.m. in many parts of the city. Additionally, CA1 and CA9, specifically their inner city portions, should be avoided during peak rush hour due to the volume of traffic they experience.

They didn’t have a car on my reservation fare and they said that wasn’t car available and I had to postpone my pickup to the next day. I had to argument several times until they assumed the responsibility and give a upgrade, so I could have the car at the day of my reservation. Once That was done, the experience on pickup and drop off was totally fine.

I have checked prices online first. After my purchase, I have accepted to add a $100 or so for insurance. When I arrived at the rental station, I was told that I had the obligation to pay another $100 or so insurance for the car otherwise , I could not rent the car. I felt like … scammed… Furthermore, the black film at the forward windows is a very bad idea. By night or in a garage, parking lot, you see nothing.

I was assisted by Angelo, but I was not only very pleased with his courtesy and professionalism, but also with the personalized attention that the entire agency offered me. Please keep that way of service. I will be back.

The car that i reserved through the website was not for 7 people as advertised. I ended up paying almost $100 more for one on site. Terrible.

Luxury SUV

I absolutely hate bait-and-switch scams, and that’s exactly what Avis Guatemala pulled on me. I paid for a luxury SUV (Toyota Prado) but was given a Hyundai Santa Fe instead — a much cheaper and inferior vehicle. The Prado is a true luxury SUV; the Santa Fe simply is not. I feel deeply disappointed and misled. I paid for quality and got something far worse. Avis may have made a quick $200, but they lost me as a long-term customer who rents vehicles multiple times a year.

I was given the wrong address. Fox is also Europcar which is so confusing. It took an hour to find it. Then took about 45 minutes to check-in and get the car. I was told drop-off was the same place as pick-up. Yes but you have to call for someone to show up. Honestly such a hassle. Not worth it.

Standard SUV

Pickup of vehicle was supposed to be at the airport but was not - had to squeeze into their pickup truck to get over to where the car was, which was not ready. Gave us car on empty, we had to get fuel immediately. Then we had small scratch on side of car and got charged $813 a few weeks later with no communication regarding it, so I will be disputing this. Terrible, would never recommend these guys.
