Smaller vehicles are especially recommended if you will be parking in the downtown areas.

Do a detailed video recording of the whole vehicle, not only damages but areas that normally don’t qualify anywhere else for such consideration. I say this especially for US customers that are accustomed to different (higher) standards and honest service.

Roads in Hungary are well maintained and people drive safely. The only issue is that as motorways are limited you may incur in some traffic so take it into account when planning timings.

Don’t drive like you would at home. Pay attention and don’t get road rage when you drive in the fast lane and somebody comes up behind you. Pull over and let them pass

It is well worth considering renting a car during your time in Budapest, especially if you are a family traveling together. While for the most part public transportation is widely available, at times it can be laborious and time consuming to use. This is particularly the case if you would like to visit the many tourist destinations in the city’s neighboring areas. For instance, Esztergom is the former capital of Hungary and is just 60 km away from Budapest. There is also the Gödöllő Palace, which is a mere 30 km from the city.
Is step one of your vacation in Hungary picking up the rental car? For travelers with flights landing at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, the rental car desks are conveniently located in the main hall of the airport.
In Budapest there are strictly no right turns on red at intersections. The only time this does not apply is when there is a separate green turn signal indicating that you may turn. Drivers caught turning right on red risk fines and there is no leeway given to travelers who claim to not know that this was a rule.
Rush hour traffic in Budapest, like many capital cities, can be rough at times. Drivers can expect the morning rush hour to start around 7:00 a.m. and last until 9:30 a.m., while in the afternoon the traffic picks up again at around 4:00 p.m. and cools down at about 7:00 p.m. The central business district is one of the worst-hit areas, particularly in the evening, so travelers are advised to avoid it at those times if they can.

2.0 Poor

Istvan, Aug 2025

Extremely poor experience. I have been warned that the company will attempt to overcharge for damages that were not caused by me and that are/or minor scratches that they have no intention repairing and are simply require a re-buffing. Scratches that other companies -in my experience renting in multiple countries and agencies- would not record as they fall under generally accepted standards. I was recommended by friends to do a walk-around and video-record the condition of the car in great detail. Unfortunately I didn’t do that as I found no significant damages. When I picked up the car, there was no one available to check the car’s condition and when I dropped it off the agents said there is no need for him checking as he believed me there were no issues to report. Next day I received and invoice already charged to my card for damages I didn’t cause. Next invoice for rental with multiple VAT that are not applicable to non-EU residents and were not disclosed at the time of pickup. I would never go back to this company in Hungary. Other countries maybe, but would avoid doing business with them in Hungary.

Andras, Sept 2026

Economy

Ok value overall, however lots of hidden costs and pushy agents trying to upscale insurance. Pick up drop off with the paperwork took nearly an hour so factor in that to your travel time. Once picked up I was pressured to purchase an inclusive insurance for 70 euros for three days (car hire was 12) even though I declined multiple times. Car was is not included in the price and as per the contract it must be returned after it’s been cleaned. (Car was dirty at pickup.) Car had over 100k kms with ware and tear which was not logged, so make sure you take very, very detailed photos of the vehicle on pickup if you don’t want to lose your deposit. I’ve been asked for photos on damages that wasn’t logged and if I didn’t take up close photos of the damages which could be missed I would have lost a chunk of my deposit. Also the car pickup was in the dark in the car park so I asked the agent if I could bring the car into their lit garage to take videos of the vehicle. Finally, motorway toll price was not included in the hire of the vehicle which was another 20 euros. Overall while the value of the hire was good, I’m not sure I’d hire from them again as the hassle and the risk of picking up a damaged car isn’t worth it.

Economy

The car and the pickup process were fine, but the issue was that I was given two options of extra payment and they were both very expensive. The first one was an extra 30 euros for returning the car, paying the highway fee at the gas station (potentially more complicated and expensive) and a potential fine for a not spotted cleaned the car at the returning and the second one was an extra insurance (almost 3 times the rental I've already paid). Not ok

6.0 Okay

Anonymous, Jun 2022

I received almost brand new car. More clever information about the prices, insurance and if you want to take the car abroad.

8.0 Very Good

Anonymous, Nov 2021

They are professional, just they should stop emphasing and try to influence you to take the full insurance as they increase the your worrys to influence you to take the full coverage.

This was by far the worst car rental experience in the last 20 years. It reminded me of car rental experiences 30 years ago when you still had to be hyper vigilant not to get scammed. I did some research and I have to agree with a lot of the reviews on the internet. This car rental company is dodgy. They will try to find the tiniest scratch in order to charge you or the insurance company extra. I do not recommend anyone doing business with them, including Kayak.

The time of closing their counter at 20:00 is a bit too early. With a flight arriving later one might have trouble.

The pick up was ok. The car had a problem besides it was filthy. The biggest problem the car would not start when I stopped and tried to restart it. Hence they refused to fill with petrol and then budget charged my card $185 to fill the car. A Toyota Yaris Rip off watch out
