Considering the amount of money spent on overseas holiday spots, many of us tend to opt for the classic, top destinations when we go on holiday. It’s not every day you choose to travel to a lesser-known and lesser-travelled destination. However, the times are a-changin’, and many Indians these days are going out of their way to make plans to visit new places – ones that are off the beaten track, affordable, and definitely worth every minute of holiday planning.

Here are some unique destinations outside of India that are up-and-coming for their ease of access, recreation that doesn’t burn a hole in your pockets, and scenic beauty that promises to do wonders for your soul!

We’ve compiled some of our favourite cheap holiday destinations in Europe

Zagreb, Croatia

Cheap Holiday Destinations in Europe - Zagreb, Croatia

The Croatian capital of Zagreb is very much a European city with its cobbled streets and grandiose medieval architecture.  With its busy streets, roadside cafes, nature-loving residents, and galleries carrying modern art, the city is beginning to earn itself a reputation as a quirky, unique city worth discovering – with the intriguing ‘Museum of Broken Relationships’ a case in point.

There are a bunch of airlines travelling to Zagreb via different cities on the daily, so travellers need not be concerned about catching the right flight!

A note on visas: Indians require a European Schengen Visa for entry to Estonia, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia. The Croatian visa requires additional attention as it is yet to be part of the Schengen Zone. It is advisable to check the official embassy website a few months in advance of travel to avoid delays and last-minute panic!

KAYAK Hot Tip For Confident Travellers: Although flights down-under aren’t the cheapest in the world, once you’re there, food, transportation and entertainment is very affordable. Avoid taking flights via Australia as that would entail an additional in-transit visa. Try Thai Air or Singapore Airlines instead! (Visa formalities need to be completed three weeks prior)
