Nebraska’s largest city, Omaha was founded to outfit people traveling along the Oregon and Mormon trails and later became the eastern terminus for the first transcontinental railroad. Among the city’s claim to fame is one of the nation’s most unique zoos with indoor habitats, a wildlife park that people can drive through, a U.S. military aircraft, spacecraft, and missile museum, and Boy’s Town, which was made famous by the 1938 Hollywood film staring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. Omaha’s riverfront has also enjoyed a renewal with newly created parks and footpaths that link it to the Old Market district, a former warehouse area that stretches out for twelve blocks and is filled with new shops and restaurants.
Durham Western Heritage Museum is located within walking distance of the Old Market in a restored Union Station and chronicles the city’s neighborhoods, notable citizens, and interesting historical sites with a unique, hands-on learning experience, special collections, and temporary exhibits as well as train cars on display and an authentic 1931 soda fountain that overlooks the elaborately decorated main waiting room.

The weather in Omaha can be crazy and changeable. Sudden summer storms can blow in rather quickly with high winds that are strong enough to cause property damage. If this happens, it is best to seek shelter immediately until the storm dies down. Also starting in the spring be sure to keep an ear tuned for tornado warnings. During wintertime, do not be surprised if a sunny day suddenly turns to rain, hail, snow, and ice in short order. And be aware of possible ground blizzards that can come out of nowhere during a sunny day with the wind blowing the snow on the ground causing white-outs, drifts, and hazardous driving conditions.
