Hilo is located on the Main Island or big island of Hawaii. Visitors looking for some pleasant exercise and fabulous views should stop by the downtown Hilo Improvement Association and pick up a copy of their self-guided walking tour of Hilo that features eighteen historic sites, which date from the 1870s to the present day. Along the Banyan Drive beach area is the location where Four Frightened People was filmed. Also located along Banyan Drive is the Liliuokalani Gardens, a thirty-acre park with a large Japanese garden that contains pagodas, carp ponds, bonsai trees, and a moon-gate bridge. Of course, visitors will also want to check out the Kilauea Volcano and its surrounding desert of made from layers of lava, fine ash and fallout.
