Albany Travel Guide

The fourth oldest city and second largest capital city in the country, two of the Albany's biggest achievements consist of two monumental building projects, the New York State Capital built from native stone and taking thirty years to complete, and the Empire State Plaza, Nelson Rockefeller's major contribution to the area. The original native settlement was called Penpotawotnot with its colonial history beginning when Englishman, Henry Hudson explored the area for the Dutch East India Company in 1609. Places of interest include the New York State Museum with its new exhibit commemorating the 9/11 terrorist attacks; the Albany Institute of History and Art and the Shaker Heritage Society.
