Located in the northeast region of England, Newcastle International Airport is close to Scotland and much of northern England. The airport is currently undergoing major renovations and plans are to turn Newcastle International Airport into one of Britain's largest airports. The airport flies to many Middle Eastern countries. When all renovations are complete, they hope to bring hundreds of jobs to the area and make flying to England and Scotland easy and fun.

Newcastle International Airport in the 1930s, but during the war, the airport became a Royal Air Force base. It would be two decades before the airport saw passenger traffic again. In the late 70s, an expansion was planned and a new terminal extension and gates were added. More expansions took place in the 1990s to keep up with traffic increases. Today, more than five million passengers use the airport every year. Plans are to upgrade the road system, improve the terminal building adding stores and restaurants, improve and enlarge the parking areas, build a new air traffic control tower, and an airport Ramada hotel is planned in the near future. Despite the ongoing construction, the airport remains easy to navigate.

Smokers should be aware that smoking in public areas both inside and outside the Newcastle International Airport is illegal. Stiff fines will be handed down to anyone caught smoking in the airport. For this reason, those who will be in the airport long enough to need a cigarette might want to have nicotine gum or patches on hand.

Newcastle Directions

It is easy to reach Newcastle International Airport. Those coming from areas in northern England above Newcastle upon Tyne or from Scotland will take the A1 south to Newcastle and then catch the A696 bringing them straight into the airport. The drive from Edinburgh takes approximately two hours. Drivers from the south will also take the A1 south to the A696 and head directly into the airport. York is about two hours away.

From the west, drivers will find it easiest to take the A69 east to the A1 and then head north for approximately two miles to the A696 which leads directly to the airport grounds. In all cases, the A1 avoids the busy traffic of Newcastle Upon Tyne's downtown and leads right to the A696, a main route that after three miles leads directly into the airport. This makes driving to the airport simple and quick.

Main Terminal

Newcastle International Airport consists of one building that has three floors. The first floor houses a number of services, airport check-in counters, both international and domestic arrival areas, baggage claims, and access to the metro and parking garages. Escalators, elevators, and stairs lead to the second floor where the security checkpoints are found, only ticketed passengers are allowed upstairs. On the second floor, the majority of restaurants and stores are scattered throughout the waiting areas and airline lounges. The departure gates are on the final floor.

Flights within Great Britain are handled by Aer Arann, Aer Lingus, British Airways, Eastern Airways, easyJet, Flybe, and Jet2.com. Currently, a few tour companies offer flights to Florida in the United States, but the airport is working on bringing service to New York City.
