A riad is the traditional architectural style of Morocco, and Dar Les Cigognes is an example of the Andalucian-Moorish style. Morocco's most famous architect, Charles Boccara, led the renovation that lasted 4 years using only traditional materials and techniques. With its privileged position facing the gates of the Royal Palace, Dar Les Cigognes was once the home of a wealthy spice merchant and dates back to the 1600's.
The hotel is very centrally located in the heart of the old medina of Marrakech facing the gates of the Royal Palace. There are several major sites all within a 10 minute walk of the hotel: Badii Palace, Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, Dar Si Said Museum, Maison Tiskiwin, historic Mellah neighbourhood, Agdal Gardens and, of course, the Jemaa El Fna square.
Dar Les Cigognes is comprised of two adjoining riads with central courtyards centred around trees and fountains. All rooms face into the courtyard as is traditional in riad-style houses - a design suited to the climate. With metre thick walls and in-room air-con, guests have total control over their environment.
There are several open air sitting areas throughout the hotel, a library with a wide range of art books and novels, salon and living room, dining room, and extensive roof gardens. There is also a traditional Moroccan hammam as well as a full-service spa offering everything from massage to waxing, facial, manicure, pedicure, or even henna tattoo. The hotel offers guests complimentary wi-fi throughout. Afternoon tea is complimentary and a full service bar is available. On certain nights special meals are prepared offering a broader selection of foods, and live traditional music accompanies. There is a concierge on duty, a chauffeur can be provided, and the hotel staff are able to organise and plan a wide range of activities.
