I've lived here for over 20 years and just remind people to be patient, kind and obey the traffic laws and any rude you may encounter drivers have mostly come from out of state folks, looking at you California and New York!!

We didn't really stay in Colorado Springs, but that area around all of the auto dealerships is very convenient, and convenient to I-25 as well as the road to Breckenridge and points North and West of COS.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Colorado Springs
Probably the most iconic natural attraction of Colorado are the Rocky Mountains. Colorado Springs is nestled on the eastern side and a rental car puts travelers within a 2.5 hours’ driving distance of the popular Rocky Mountain National Park. When coming to this city, visiting the park is a must and there is no easier and better way to do it than with your own car.
Colorado Springs Airport is about 12 miles from the city and offers various car rental agencies like Alamo, Budget, and Enterprise. Conveniently pick up a rental car from one of the many counters located in the baggage claim area and start your time in Colorado Springs with ease. Signs indicate the way out of the airport and via the Hancock Expressway and travelers will be in Colorado Springs within 20 minutes.
Colorado Springs is popular for its many scenic routes, yet there are some passes that are very narrow and may be a challenge for people who are scared of heights. Driving in the mountains also means adjusting your speed and navigating carefully when coming to such passes, such as the Wolf Creek Pass. Also always opt for a low gear when going up and down the mountain so the brakes don’t overheat. Switch off the air conditioning as well to prevent the vehicle from overheating, as otherwise some functions may not operate properly anymore.
Driving through Colorado Springs makes for an epic experience, but winter conditions can be severe and bring snow and ice. Make sure the rental car is properly equipped with snow tires and even snow chains. When conditions are very wintery, also carry an emergency kit in the car, including a flashlight, ice scraper, blanket, and some snacks, just in case you get stuck and it takes a while for someone to reach you. Driving in Colorado Springs should be no problem -- as long as you’re properly prepared for it.

FAQs about renting a car in Colorado Springs
What type of car is recommended for driving in Colorado Springs?
With mountainous regions and snow in the winter, a 4-wheel drive car is a very good option for Colorado Springs. Good road grip is not only essential for winter road conditions, but also for the gravel roads in the mountains year-round. A pickup truck will provide the required road grip and a truck bed for bulky luggage, but an SUV is probably a better choice when wanting to drive not only around but also inside the city.
What’s the speed limit in Colorado Springs?
Unless posted otherwise, 25 mph is permitted in most residential areas, while 30 mph is also allowed in some. Rural interstates allow between 65 and 70 mph and open mountain highways allow 40 mph. Winding mountain roads only permit 20 mph -- it is crucial to adhere to this speed limit, as they often have blind curves and narrow lanes.
Where are the best places to park in Colorado Springs?
There is on-street metered parking available, which is free on Sundays, as well as parking garages like the Bijou Cascade Parking Garage or the Kiowa/Nevada Parking Garage. The advantage of a garage is that they are safer due to safety cameras and are also open 24/7, making overnight parking possible.

Poor first experience renting a vehicle from Budget. The gentleman whom checked me in was very bland and unhelpful. He gave me a much larger vehicle that was terrible to maneuver around Colorado Springs. He acted liked he was doing me a God-given favor. Would not recommend this company to anyone.

Budget check-in was kinda grumpy. And worst part was the gas funnel was defective, it took 20 minutes to pump gas cause it was getting stuck in filler. My hand and arm had to work hard to pump the gas each time. And the car was only filled 3/4 of a tank!

I might have misunderstood the kayak website but when I choose “offsite airport” I thought it was a situation where the rental lot was away from the airport and there would be a shuttle. When I checked in at the Budget counter they said my reservation was at a completely different location and there was no shuttle. My rate went up around $70. My mom is in a wheelchair so I had to get the car at the airport. It was frustrating but I’ll know in the future. Thanks
The car was not what I ordered and I could not get a receipt

Terrible! Mike at Colorado Springs airport cancelled my reservation at the desk after I complained about having to pay additional coverage! I then had to go online and make another reservation. Went back to Mike and he then proceeded to tell me that it was rare to get same day reservations and that the only car available was an electric car. The car was a nightmare to charge and kept showing all sorts of malfunction alerts, I returned it early. Never again!

Rude agents at pick up. Couldn’t book earlier that 8AM, wouldn’t give car 30 minutes early for a 5 hour car rental. Very expensive for one day rental, but I was in a bind.

Pick up was quick and easy. Drop off was an issue. I took a photo of the mileage and fuel gauge to show but was just asked for the keys. I was billed for not fueling the truck. Ended up having to call customer service due to being incorrectly charged for not filling the truck
The car I reserved was unavailable. No cars were available at that location. Cost me $200+ in Ubers instead.

Went to website to add another day to rental, accidently canceled. Called the phone number and explained that I fat-fingered the buttons, I did not want to cancel but add another day. The associate was very unhelpful and still penalized us with a cancellation fee that was a few dollars less than the rental was. I will never use Hertz again and will tell everyone to go to Enterprise instead.

Office seemed disorganized and unprofessional. There were two other customers ahead of me and I waited nearly 20 minutes to be waited on while the agents chatted with customers. Drop off was very smooth, but pick up was agonizingly tedious.. Also, I was not aware of that. I had to go offsite out of the airport to pick up the car. I had been a Budget customer previously, and intend to go back to Budget next time.

When I drove off the lot a warning message appeared. Went back and the service representative took the time and effort to ensure it was an adjustment from the last driver and everything was good. A thousand miles later things were still good. Thank you to that gentleman at Hertz (off Woodman road in north Colorado Springs).

Very friendly and competent staff. The car was pretty old. Kind of hard to drive on Colorado streets sometimes.
I asked for an all wheel drive vehicle and was not given one which I was not aware of until getting stuck. For the rest of my time I could not drive up to my accommodations and had to have elderly travel companions walk up a snow covered icy driveway several times due to the fear of getting stuck again. Both of them fell. Given the conditions of my travel in the mountains of CO the vehicle was inadequate.
