The island was British-occupied so you need to drive on the left side of the road (opposite the USA). Many of the roads are rough and some are unpaved so an all wheel drive car can be helpful if you are getting off the main roads. However, roads are also narrow so we appreciated having a smaller car.

Driving on Antigua is quite an adventure. Obviously for those not used to driving on the left, as done in Britain, it takes a minute to get used to. Worse than that, turn signals and wiper controls are also reversed from American style so I was constantly turning on the wipers instead of the turn signals. My wife cracked up the whole time! On a serious note, many of the roads are in poor condition, narrow, and have sharp drop offs into a gutter/sewer system with no protection. Be careful! The hardest thing for me to get accustomed to where the roundabouts going in the opposite direction that I am accustomed to. I have driven extensively in Aruba, where there are many roundabouts, and it works very well. However, coming into them from the left and going clockwise was a bit unnerving. Thankfully, most of the vehicles travel fairly slow. Also, I found it very odd that many locals street park but in the opposite direction of traffic. So while driving on the left side of a narrow road, you may have multiple vehicles parked in the street facing you on your side. It was a bit concerning at times and made me wonder if I was on a one-way street or something. The island is small and relatively easy to get completely across it in an hour or so. We stayed near a beach north of St. John’s and drove down to Shirley Heights and that area with no trouble.

Pay close attention to driving in Antigua, especially in town. You'll find a lot of cars just left at the side of the road, growing their own eco system after abandonment for a reason – driving in Antigua is a game and a lot of people lose! Almost all vehicles on the road have damage, there are no painted roads or sidewalks for pedestrians, the infrastructure created for flooding includes insane ditches on some roads that you can simply drive right into if not careful, and treacherous poorly paved windy roads. We managed fine (maybe because we're from NYC where we are used to drive 60mph with our sideview 3 inches from the next car) but don't say you weren't warned, haha! Have fun!

Had to get local police to help with the changed office pick up point, Then waited 45 minutes at the drop off to get a ride back to the cruise ship and was literally less than five minutes from being left behind. Car was old and needs front end work. Almost felt dangerous
