We got a mid-size SUV that got over 30 mpg highway. In retrospect we could have rented a sedan instead and saved a little on gas. Depending on your itinerary you may be driving a lot. In a week we drove nearly 1600 miles. You can drive drive up to 85 mph on some of the freeways. The police tolerate 10 mph over the limit.

Prices can be pretty high and rates change on a daily basis depending on what's going on in the city. Be aware that my experience is people in New Mexico are pretty rough with their cars. Expect to get dinged if parked in public lots. You might want to opt for insurance if you don't have it already.

Driving in Albuquerque is fine. No parking problems even in high tourist areas like Old Town. Note that we were there in the off season. Gas prices were lower than in Gallup.

Driving in Albuquerque is the most convenient and effective way of getting to know the city, as all the major interest points are sprawled out. While you may prefer to walk in the Old Town area, a car is a must when exploring the rest of the city. Drive along the iconic Route 66 (or Central Ave), which cuts through the downtown area all the way to the university area. A car is also the perfect option for those looking to explore other destinations outside the city such as the Sandia Peak, which is located in the Sandia Mountains area, less than 20 miles from Albuquerque. New Mexico's capital, Santa Fe, is also a short hour’s ride away from Albuquerque.
All the big car rental agencies, including Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz, can be found at Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)'s Car Rental Center. There is a free shuttle bus service between the airport terminal building and the Car Rental Center, with shuttles departing every 5 minutes or so from the lane outside the first level of the terminal building. The shuttle service is handicap accessible.
Fender benders happen quite often in Albuquerque, so watch out for reckless drivers. The weather gets pretty rough in the winter, which means you must be extra careful when driving during this season as accidents often happen due to strong winds, snow, or black ice that has formed. This location is a train wreck. Terrible customer service. The Avis agent was watching a football game on his phone, paying more attention to that rather than getting our rental app verified. NEVER AGAIN WITH AVIS AND LIKELY NOT EVEN KAYAK.
Great car (Jeep Wrangler) and friendly folks - about the only ding was some confusion over the fuel level - it was supposed to be pre-paid full-to-empty (yes, I’m that guy), but the car showed up nearly empty. They were good about situation and had the charges adjusted on the spot.

Long line at ACE ™️ car rental desk in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On average, there was ONE customer service representative at the desk assisting customers and if we were lucky, the second would help. The vehicle was not in the car located on the damage/receipt that would assist us in finding the car. A few clicks of the door lock, and the car was a couple spots over. I had to take extensive pictures ov dings and scratches because none was noticed on the receipt. (This is not the stress I was hoping for to start out my trip)… The trunk had rocks and small wood pieces where you would normally place luggage… The last time my wife used Ace, she was stranded and the vehicle wouldn’t go into gear. After a couple days they finally replaced it with no apology or anything… she missed the activity she was supposed too arrive for and W/O ANY sorry sir compensatory actions from ACE. It’s almost your FORCED to used a couple of companies that at there because of a lack of staff at the ABQ rental complex.

Very slow service during pickup. Only one person working the counter. One person had to come back to the counter twice, once because change oil light was on in his car and then again when he was given a different car and charged more for an upgrade. Return went smoothly for us however.
The pickup was a little hard bc there was no one to show me where the car was and the lot was blocked off and difficult to get out of. But the car itself was great. A little pricey.

Be prepared to wait in line for Budget in ABQ -- there's usually a single staffer working the counter for three rental companies. We were 5th in line when we got there on this past trip and it took about an hour to get our car. Now the price can't be beat and once you have your car all is good; you just need to be prepared for what you're walking into

they changed the car make at the pick up-theone I got was a trimmed version and the 4motion was missing the rotary dial to engage in snow mode-and the manual in the glove compartment was for a different model wurth such a dial, so no use of it-without snow mode we had to cancel some plans

We selected the managers special only to find out on arrival that the car was electric. That was a surprise! Our final destination probably wouldn’t have a charging station so we were forced to upgrade at almost double the price. The agent was unapologetic. Fool me once…

Hertz lied, we went all the way to the airport to pick up our confirmed rental and they would not honor the confirmation! They told us that even though we made a reservation and had a confirmation number they had rented our car to someone else so they were out of cars.

We cancelled the car rental and have NOT received our $$ back
The rental car shuttle service to and from the airport is quick and convenient. The staff at the Alamo desk was helpful and efficient. The entrance to the rental car return was a little confusing but we figured it out on the second pass. Our car was clean and performed well. We had a great experience renting from Alamo.
We booked thrifty via a third party so we could pay in advance and when we arrived there were so many people there to pick up a car that we were put on a wait list, only to find out they ended up running out of cars (lucky we had gone to a different place to see if we could get one, although we paid over double what the original rental from Thrifty was meant to be). The employees at Thrifty Albuquerque were apologetic and tried to help, but said there was nothing they could do because the third party companies reserve cars without knowing the amount of inventory available. Whether this is a Thrifty problem, or a problem with the rental car business (esp 3rd party) overall, I’m not sure but it shouldn’t be this way and I’ve never had this problem before, so there should be some oversight for car reservations - especially those that have been prepaid as we are now having to fight with the third party (Qeek) to get our money back.
