When it comes to car hire in Accra, the best vehicle to reserve will depend entirely on the nature of your trip. If you plan to stick within the city limits, exploring Osu Castle Museum, Sandbox Beach and other downtown attractions, a compact car will make driving and parking easier. However, if you think you might like to venture out to explore spots like Cliff Haven Beach Resort or Keta Lagoon, it may be wise to book a 4X4. This will give you more space for luggage and will be more comfortable when you’re passing through rural areas outside of Accra.
Within the Accra city limits, you’ll find speed limits of either 30 km/h or 50 km/h. It’s crucial to keep an eye out for speed signs and stick carefully to the posted limit. Speed cameras are in use in Accra, particularly on main thoroughfares like Achimota Road, and authorities may arrest motorists who drive in excess of the posted limit. If you’ll be heading out of town on any regional or inter-regional highways, the speed limit is generally 80 km/h. On national highways, it’s 90 km/h, while on motorways, the speed limit is generally 100 km/h.
Accra provides designated on-street parking spaces along with off-street parking facilities. Off-street facilities vary in size, quality and pricing, with some offering secure covered parking and others simply providing open space. To give you a general idea of pricing, the City Car Park, which can be found in the downtown area close to Ussher Fort Museum, offers secure covered parking starting from around GH₵ 4 (approximately A$ 0.60) per hour. Though you may see some people parking in non-designated areas, this is not advised, as the city of Accra can and will tow away vehicles that are illegally parked.

Pros:
What I enjoyed about having a rental car in Ghana was the convenience of not having to get taxis to go everywhere with can add up. Also specialty rental car agencies are quite pricey. But with the money I paid for Hertz Ghana, I might as well have rented a limousine!Cons:
Firstly, the customer service was poor. With the exception of one agent who helped me during the pick up Henry Kofitse was cold, unfriendly and entirely money oriented. They also have a reservation deposit policy that forced me to buy local insurance and makes the insurance you get online directly from kayak or Hertz (because Hertz Ghana is a local franchise) obsolete. Essentially they told me I have to deposit close to $3000 USD if I didn't buy the local insurance which cost $600 or so on top of the rental car cost!!!! He also made me pay an additional $89 dollars for adding a day and charged two separate fees for drop off on Sunday because it was a "non-business day" but when we arrived the office had been open since morning and he was renting cars out to other clients (their business hours were not listed by the way). This is a money grubbing office and despite the fact that we needed the car, I would not rent here again. Unfortunately Hertz Ghana is one of only two reliable locations that rent cars in Ghana, so they are capitalizing on their monopoly and corporate affiliation with Hertz. I would rent the car again but if there were similar choices I would not think twice to pick another rental car company.4.0 Mediocre
